Nebraska hasn't been able to set the middle for two years and it's become a major problem. A combo of a marginal setter and some really unskilled attackers in the middle. Cici Hall will put a ball away 2 in 10 swings. Haggerty might be the worst slide hitter in the country, though that was her bread and butter as a freshman (with Lauren Cook setting her). The middles have been an offensive weakness all season, but last night was as bad as it's ever been. Once Hunter is running the offense next year the middles will be involved again. Mary is not comfortable running a middle attack. Don't know why, she just isn't, won't, hasn't. Listening to the match last night passing was less than average. I'd assume that was a major issue at not running the middles.

Listening to the match last night passing was less than average. I'd assume that was a major issue at not running the middles. Agree, it all starts with the pass. Probably their worst passing night since their last loss. Mary can look like a top setter as long as they are in system, and Mary usually has to be in system to give the middles and the opposite some good looks. I'm actually surprised NE was able to take it to 5.

Half of her back sets to Amber could be called for a double. Her inability to consistently run a middle/right side attack is sometimes overshadowed if the outsides have a good match. In her 2 year career as Nebraska's setter, no middle or even Amber has ever taken over a match offensively. Fortunately, Mary does have a very nice tempo set to the outside..but that's about as good as it gets. If anyone watched Nebraska during warm-ups this season it was clear Kelly is the better setter, and the only reason she is being held out is because Pollmiller is a senior captain and best leader on the team, and the Huskers will be a very veteran team the next 3 years.

It was clear back in Asia that Kelly was the better setter. The Red/White match confirmed it for NE fans. It wasn't so much a White 3 to 1 over Red as it was Kelly 3 to 1 over Mary. NE is lucky to have gotten to 20 wins. Would not have made it without Fien catching fire. NE will do well to make it to the sweet 16 in the tourney.

Given what I've seen of these two teams, am surprised that most people thought Neb would win. I didn't vote though, so it's probably not my place to talk about the outcome.

Can you give us some insight into your observations when you were in China this summer with the team? Also can you post the results of the fan poll from those who attended the red/white match?

I'm happy for Mary and her taking charge of the young Husker team; and also happy Kelly decided to red shirt! Hopefully the year off doesn't dull her capabilities! GO HUSKERS

Illinois doesn't have a top setter either.
