Congrats to BYU. They came prepared and it showed. Here is my frustration with this team Imagine how Cook feels!! We have dealt with the highs and lows all year. Their passing last night was atrocious to say the least. Mary ran all over the court like a jack rabbit. We didn't use the middles because their was very little opportunity. I know volleyball is a game of momentum swings but this still perplexes me how Nebraska can be mentally prepared then be out to lunch the next evening. That is something the players themselves have to conquer young team or not. If they can't, they will never be able to compete for the big prize. You may be putting too much on the players. Olmstead stayed in the press area after BYU's win over FSU Friday and watched the entire Nebraska/UW match. He was still there reading stats as fans were filing out. I suspect he saw how Nebraska keyed on Vansant all night and realized what Cook's game plan would likely be for dealing with BYU: focus on Hamson. So Olmstead put together an offensive game plan that really spread the offense around, probably more than any match BYU has played this year. Maybe this one came down to coaching prep, more than player play.

Maybe this one came down to coaching prep, more than player play. Whether or not he stayed to watch the match, scouting is ALL done from a very sophisticated video/stat program. While some coaches like to watch to get some sort of feel, the video which can of course be watched over and over, edited so they can watch the same rotations 40 times consecutively. I can tell you, while BYU played great, he didnt put more time or energy into than anyone else. Also at that level, you can assume both teams are going to be very well opponent prep, it comes down to player performance way more than any sort of game plan. BYU played better in really every area of the game, it was hardly a wash, and BYU's strategy made the differences. I would say the same thing about UN beating UW.

I'm going to have to re-watch this. I didn't think Nebraska played that badly, and in fact were pretty good defensively. Holding BYU to .236 is solid considering the Cougars were "on." I just thought BYU's block took them out of the game and the Cougars came up with some key, and kinda unexpected, digs that didn't allow the Huskers to get into the match (which was different from Friday when the Huskies gave up some very retrievable balls).
Nebraska could certainly have played better, but so could Hamson.

Accept the fact that John Cook was outcoached and outstrategized by Olmstead.

Mark my words, mock me if you like.....Alohi Robins-Hardy will be the future setter of the national team! I'm calling it now. I might be trolling, I might be not. Ok, I just drank a bottle of wine. But look at her, she's very much the Alisha Glass prototype that Karch likes...and has potential to be even better. Silly rabbit. For the record I'm a Hancock fan but as far as setters for national team, carlini is prob better then hardy on bum leg. Have u not payed attention to volleyball at all. lol this is complete bafoonery, so many setters in front of her.

Accept the fact that John Cook was outcoached and outstrategized by Olmstead. lol I wouldn't go that far, BYU has freaks of nature in the front row, I don't believe this was all coaching I believe a lot of it was height, and nebraska lost it all after making washington so confused the day earlier.

Accept the fact that John Cook was outcoached and outstrategized by Olmstead. Certainly not trying to diminish the great job Olmstead did, I just feel at that level both teams will be exceptionally prepared, understand the challenges the opponent presents, but that players, and the level they perform at decide matches way more than coaches prep. Is outstrategized a word?

Not sure Cook was out-coached. They really spent everything emotionally on Washington, and BYU was too good for Nebraska to not be at 100%.

Meske made the comment in the post game that they couldn't get any video on BYU to aid in preparation. It is really that difficult? I don't know how that all works in scouting at the collegiate level.

Took me less than 5 minutes to find this.. thew.tv/videos/wcc_volleyball_12_byu_at_gonzaga_2014_11_23_02_50

I have always felt in these short-turnaround tournament matches, the team playing the first match of the night is at a bit of an advantage.
In Seattle Friday, BYU played FSU at 4 p.m. That match ended at 6:05 p.m. Olmstead could watch the Nebraska/UW match with no distractions and his players were probably back in their hotel rooms by 7-30.
Nebraska's match against UW began at 6:40 p.m. and didn't end until 8:52 p.m. Cook might have been able to watch a little bit of the BYU match, but he had to be focused on UW and getting his team ready.
The BYU players had nearly an additional three full hours of recovery time compared to Nebraska. Not trying to make excuses for Cook and Nebraska, and I doubt they're looking for any.
It's a small difference, but it's probably one of the reasons the Final Four puts an extra day between the semi-finals and the final.

I think coaches are always looking for baseline video that shows both sides of the court. That could be what he is talking about. I would also say that most conference teams wouldnt share video of one of the teams in their conference if in fact that dont have a specific rule against it, making it hard to get any video that is in anyway current. I'm guessing someone on their staff can operate their google search to find this one(or I sure hope so)

This was on serve receive for crying out loud and not out of system. Its a lack of mental focus and toughness.

Would love to see Stash Olmstead's team take it all. (BTW, how ironic is it that BYU bans beards? Joseph Smith couldn't be hired as an assistant volleyball coach.) If you check your history, LDS founder Joseph Smith never had a beard. Nor do any of the other Final 4 coaches. Coach Olmstead is just growing a mustache during the tournament as extra motivation for his team. Jennifer Hamson is also highly motivated on her own. She was already drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks to play professional basketball next year, and she's trying to do well enough this year in volleyball to play professional volleyball, so she can choose between the opportunities she is offered in both sports. Her value and stock just keep going up, up, up with each postseason win.

I don't know how that all works in scouting at the collegiate level. It was a short turnaround but I am pretty sure that ESPN3 offered video replay of the matches before so they must not have been trying very hard.
