I wonder about that, too. I think some of the rankings are sometimes skewed by athleticism and potential and not by actual volleyball skills and actual ability. I have seen over the last couple of years several players ranked in the top 25 that were voted there based solely because they were incredibly athletic and over 6'2" but their volleyball skills were very one dimensional or just plain raw. In reality they did not deserve that top 25 ranking and this was actually an unfair burden put on them because fans live and die by these lists.
I understand a player having huge upside / potential, but when you fill your team with several of these players and do not have the all-around, high vball IQ, glue type players also..... it is a recipe for unrealized potential and fan heartache.
Perhaps the players were over-ranked, but then again there is a reason why Texas runs away with the Big12 title each year and is a perennial final 4 participant. That reason, I think, is sheer talent and an abundance of it. And it isn't like that formula, of stockpiling highly ranked recruits, can't pay off with a championship. It did in 2012, after all. It may be that this player or that isn't quite as good as her ranking implied. But with 9 top ten players on the roster, I have to think that, for raw talent, and not just the ability to jump high or hit hard, but the talent to improve, Texas is at least the equal of anyone else.

Not sure how that was ignorant. It is the truth. PSU and Stanford are at a different level than BYU and Texas. I think my point was proven tonight. PSU was unstoppable by BYU...That match was a boring snooze fest.

Coach J.E is a good recruiter. Not sure about the Coaching. We have the same problem every year. Passing and Setting.

Coach J.E is a good recruiter. Not sure about the Coaching. We have the same problem every year. Passing and Setting. It is more than that. Texas had 4 days to prepare for BYU and chose to go mano a mano with the best blocking team in the cHow many left side attacks were blocked time after time. Compare to what Penn State game planned; right side, right side, and more right side. Lefts weren't scoring early but were only getting set once in a while and middles were stopped completely. But PSU scored continually from the right and had their defense set to dig the BYU right side attack. Worked to a T in set one before BYU adjusted a little bit, but the point is PSU was much better prepared and didn't let their ego get in the way of winning. Being the better athlete isn't always going to the win, eventually volleyball IQ comes in to play.

Do you think Russ Rose will send Elliott a gift card or at least a thank you card for scheduling Wisconsin and BYU in the championship game for Penn State the past 2 years?
And btw, what has Stanford accomplished the past 8 seasons compared to Penn State and Texas that supports proof of your point? Ignorant is too strong / negative a word, but in Stanford's case, definitely misguided and incorrect.
It's all about match ups.

Not sure it's ego, but didn't Karch say a couple of times during the BYU match that Texas approach to setting Eckerman outside was stubborn? I believe he said she needed to be set further inside. It was also mentioned during the broadcast that Elliott spoke to Collins about her setting choices and not setting the middles enough. I presume he had the same talk with Dalton during the match. Collins listened. Dalton did not

As a PSU fan, I always fear that we will end up having to play Texas, and always look forward to what I think will be a war between the two teams. Somehow, in the last three years, either we have lost (Oregon), or you have (Wisconsin, BYU) in the match before we're supposed to meet. If we had played each other those three times, I think they would have been epic battles. The Penn State-Texas NC match between Destinee Hooke's team, and Megan Hodge's, has to be one of the most brilliant, exciting, heart-stopping games ever played at that level.
This year's match would have also had the added story of Cerame having transferred to Texas, and now playing PSU in the NC.
Texas is still awe-inspiring, and frightening to watch, when the kills are coming fast and furious. I think if the Big 12 were at the level of the Big 10 and Pac 12, it would make your matches more fun, and better prepare the team for the post-season. Nonetheless, you have much to be proud of, and who wouldn't want to be near a town like Austin all-year long.
Just get rid of that obnoxious "Hook 'em" sign.

I think the talk with Collins was needed, but with four days of prep, why wasn't that practiced over and over and over until she got the message. It looked like a mid-game adjustment when it should have been game planned.

It looked like a mid-game adjustment when it should have been game planned. In Elliott's defense, his problem in the Final Four last year was that he changed up his offensive system to try and attack Morales' block (completely ignoring their bread-and-butter left side attack for backsets that Allison clearly wasn't comfortable with) so perhaps he was trying to learn from the mistakes of yesteryear. I actually thought he made a good decision late in the match to rework the system and have Bell run the quicks in front of McCage's slide a la San Diego last year since neither had been effective beforehand.

This was a very good adjustment. But if you look at Dalton's final set, she had Bell doing exactly what you said next to Dalton. Instead of the easier set to Bell, Dalton chose the more comfortable / difficult back set to McCage. Dalton was not comfortable setting the middle, etc and it hurt Texas.

I said when she left psu that the reason prieto wasn't a starter for psu cause she was way to inconsistent. To many unforced errors. Said she was overrated. Now after Texas season over I'm hearing that was one of problems Texas had was prietos inconsistency. Does she look great at moments, sure but she continues be be inconsistent. I think Texas other problem when they get to top teams late is they are very predictable. Sure u can get away with it when u have athletes Texas has but when u face teams with equal talent it can be a liability

I did see that, and I'm sure you'll even talk about USC sweeping the floor with Texas in Florida when Faucette was a Freshman and choking in Sacramento. Or when Texas flat out embarrassed USC at Texas in 2012, at least we've been the last 4 years, you went to a mediocre final four in San Antonio in 2011, that's it. You have no business talking if you're a USC fan, you're team was lucky to even make the tournament. I have every business talking as a USC fan. You mean when Texas was a higher seed in Florida against USC? You want to talk about choking (2008 and 2009 with a 2-0 lead...does that ring a bell?). Of course you have to pound your chest and say "well we got there" when you only have one ring to show for it. Then again, maybe ask yourself why Salima Rockwell went back to Penn State?

Salima went back to psu because she's a psu alum, is getting payed like a head coach to be assistant, and is being groomed to take over for rosewhen he retires( which it seems many people across vb nation can't wait for) lol. Don't think it had anything to do with Texas. Even if she got offered the promotion at Texas she would have left I believe. If u were her wouldn't u want probably the most prestigious job in womens volleyball and it just happens to be your alma mater. So if this post is replying Texas did something that caused her to wanna leave I think that's incorrect it had nothing to do with what Texas did or didn't do in my opinion
