That puts Pep back in the hunt for an AVCA bid.

Pepperdine has always been in the hunt for one of the automatic West Coast three bids. Who it does possibly is hurt Long Beach State for the at-large 4th bid. A lot will be decided this weekend at Hermosa.

Seems like LB should get the at-large bid if rankings stay the same??

Seems like LB should get the at-large bid if rankings stay the same?? The selection committee hasn't paid much attention to AVCA rankings in the past. There's been some turnover within the committee this season, though, so I don't know if that will continue to be the case. Like Vbvalley said, the upcoming USAV Hermosa tournament is an important one.

Are you going glrm? Thought about volunteering this weekend, but driving back from Hermosa seemed demotivating. Chula Vista waaaay easier.

The AVCA poll is just an attempt to get a little press coverage and interest in the sport. While LBSU still has a shot at the at-large bid, they are behind other teams in most of the criteria like strength of schedule, W/L record, record vs teams under consideration, etc. Even if they win out the rest of their matches I think they need some help to get in.

A lot will be decided this weekend at Hermosa. USC and Hawaii are locks for two of the West bids. Pepperdine was/is behind some West teams for 3rd bid in criteria such as W/L record (but not strength of schedule). It was a big win for them, mostly as you say - that it puts them clearly ahead of LBSU. A loss to LBSU would have put Pep out of AVCA in my opinion. A down year so far for Pep, but they may sneak away with 3rd West bid or At-Large now. However, it is not a sure thing - they will need to await selection day. But probably their win over FSU and a strong strength of schedule gets them in. Then anything can happen.

Not sure what West teams your are thinking of that would be chosen over Pepperdine. I would hope that the #3 choice would have to beat (or at least play) some team that is competitive i.e SoCal teams or Hawaii(and Northridge does not count) in order to get a bid. Will be interesting to see what happens up north when UCLA plays today or tomorrow; might help your case. Also, the following week will help decide when Arizona plays against USC and UCLA down in Santa Monica.
Yesterday, USC beat LMU 4-1 in a fairly competitive match. It does not help when LMU's #2s, after losing the first game, serve at 20-19 the next 4 out of 6 serves out and lose, a problem that has plagued all of LMU's teams (except for Sponcil and Metter) the entire season. USC then beat USF (San Francisco, not South Florida) 5-0. LMU followed by beating USF 4-1. The matches started at 2:30 PM but did not finish until 8:30 PM. Long day.....

Have to think LBSU is still in a strong position for that 4th spot. The east is pretty much set unless something funny happens with Stetson and the ASUN qualifier, which would push them into those 3 East spots and FSU into the at-large situation.
I don't think anyone else is really running enough of a schedule to have much of an argument. UCLA would really have to beat Long Beach in their upcoming match and beat UH or USC in the upcoming weeks to have a legit resume.

Arizona is the team that Pep needs to worry about. They are ahead in W/L record, but probably behind in strength of schedule. Will definitely require the committee to look at criteria closely. The Pep win over FSU may be what separates them from Arizona, depending on results from Pac-12 challenge. There is no rule that someone must play (or beat) your favorite SoCal teams. But note that Pep has NOT beaten USC or Hawaii, which is why they are on the 3rd place bubble (ahead of LBSU).

Right now Pepperdine is in as the third team from the West, and it's not even that close. Pepp has played a difficult schedule, and all of their four losses are of the "good" variety - each a 3-2 loss to a high ranked team. Arizona's schedule is a joke. Could something change between now and the last weekend of April? Maybe, like UA beating USC along with Pepp taking a bad loss, but Pepperdine is in the drivers seat right now. Arizona might have a shot at the at-large, but their weak schedule hurts them.

The problem with your case for Arizona is that they have played a bunch of mediocre teams and last year did not play on the same level with the SoCal teams either at the PAC 12 Invitational or at Hermosa. Maybe things have changed. When the SoCal teams and Hawaii have played other West Coast teams this year, they have won fairly convincingly. To validate your case, they are going to have to get by UCLA next weekend to have a chance. From what I say last year at those two tournaments, they do have some very good players returning for this year. So, they may very well control their own fate, but it would have helped if they also played in Hermosa this weekend.

Stanford beat Oregon 3-2 in exciting match that came down to the final third set between the 2s, with Bugg & Vanjak winning 16-14. Vanjak really hammered the ball when she got a good set.
Stanford 1s and 3s won 2-0, while Oregon's 4s and 5s won their matches.
