Conference pride is brilliant! It affords you a unique and unparalleled opportunity gloat and rile up other fans #PUREWIN (No that wasn't me tweeting; and yes, regarding conference pride, I do draw a line somewhere, albeit very crookedly where it serves my purposes). But seriously, when posters don't care about this stuff and just stick to 'their' team. That detracts from the vb fandom experience. And for 99% of teams out there NOT named PSU, there is nothing to celebrate, everrrr. So, the PAC fans can cheer on teams who went further, as can the BIG fans (and other conferences, i guess). SuperSpike takeaway for today: 1. Only following/supporting your team, with blinders on like the guy above, makes things boooring. 2. I loooove mocking the PAC, and actually enjoy it when they do it back (I'm a bad person, I know) 3. All you diehard fans for one team who don't show up at a regional in your back yard because you're too busy crying about 'YOUR'' (no it's not urs) team losing... Rediculous, and worthy of much ridicule. Likewise for the HUGE boys/girls on here who don't watch the FF/ship because 'their' team is out. Shame on you! 4. Rampage I am revoking your VB Fan card because you passed up big matches to 'study'. #FAIL 5. Lastly, I hate PSU almost as much as the next guy, but will I take credit for their achievements as if I contributed personally? Hell yeah! Especially if talking to a PAC fan! I don't have the time nor energy to follow the sport that intesnesly. I barely have enough to follow my team and I watched less Buckeye matches this year than I ever have (stipid work schedule). I'm sorry I didn't give up my nights to trudge down to campusand watch 4 teams I don't care about play volleyball, maybe the committee shouldn't have had their head up their butt and put some teams in the regional that would actually draw a crowd. But I cheer when my team succeeds, not when someone else succeeds.

Conference Pride is only convenient when you are in a gang fight against another Conference! Outside of that I enjoy it when a rival school gets their A$$ kicked regularly in all sports. I would take our posters over any other conference anyday in a back alley street fight... I think (R)uffda has a little hulk in him, and I think you could rile up all the Huskers into a frenzy and point them in the direction of a Husky with terrible results

I wonder how Rampage felt all those years the Big 10 was called the BIG 2 AND THE LITTLE 8. As it is, if you watch BTN, it's still mostly about Ohio State.
As a Penn State fan, we don't suck in other sports. We're in the top 20 and higher in every sport but baseball, basketball and football. The Big 10, NCAA, and Louis Freeh's flawed report have much to do with attempting to kill the football team, but somehow they soldier on. Not apologizing for the awful things Sandusky did, but the blame for it is completely misplaced, and when the trials are over, the truth will come out.
Nonetheless, over the years PSU has been hosed mightily by Big Ten officials in football games against the BIG 2 (OSU and Michigan), and no more so than this year when three egregious missed calls gave Ohio State the victory...otherwise Ohio State would be playing in the Outback Bowl.
Russ Rose has done what the coaches have done with every Penn State athletic team - recruit and coach class athletes, who play the game right, work hard, and graduate.
Finally, Brutus the Buckeye looks like a diseased cornea, wearing a hat.

Holy S**T Batman... there is so much wrong here, I don't know what to do with myself 1) I was like 2 when it was the Big 8 and little 2... so I guess I was upset cause I pooped my pants 2) I never said you sucked in other sports... where in gods name is this victim complex coming from? 3) LOL at the B1G trying to "kill" your football team. Like they would want to destroy one of the top brands and by far the biggest presence on the East Coast. This is just stupid. Plain old stupid. 3) Yes, blame the officials. Not your TERRIBLE offensive line. Oh, and if we lose to PSU, we still go to the B1GCG and we still kick the living crud out of Wisconsin, and we STILL go to like the Cotton Bowl or something. Again... stupid statement. This is a common thread here. 4) "who play the game right"... SURE. You just sit their on your high horse and go on with life. Of course YOUR athletes are perfect and the rest of us are just wasting away in the slime. Get over yourself. 5) Your mascot wears a scarf, acknowledging that he understands that clothes work.. AND THEN WEARS NOTHING ELSE. He is knowingly always naked. 6) Hey PSU fans, want to know why I hate your university... may I present exhibit A

I do take comfort in the fact that most of PSU other sports programs now suck, which when you average it out in the Big Ten puts them closer to the bottom. Ok, field hockey and wrestling are good. DON"T FEED THE TROLLLLLLL!! PSU athletics are (depressingly) very good... even their hockey team is now ranked, ugh

Yeah, sorry, it's just too much to ask for me to sincerely root for conference rivals who go on to greater post season success. I know it's good for the conference and therefore indirectly good for my team, but I just can't bring myself to do it. It's a lot to ask.

One of the [many]things I like about volleyball in particular and women's college sports in general is that the athletes and most of the fans are a more genial, sophisticated and mature [no I don't mean gray haired] lot who are appreciative of good play even if it's from the opponent. Good sportsmanship combined with on the field excellence and off the field excellence is something I admire and respect. Women's sports have provided that...just check out the disparity in composure, eloquence and general demeanor in the press conferences of the women's teams vs the men's teams in many sports. Over the years I have soured on the "me before we" attitude of male athletes and many of their fans [ I am a huge supporter of BT teams when they aren't playing "my" team. But then I admire top notch theoretical physicists more than I do highly rated defensive end recruits. That's how I roll]. I've stopped visiting football forums with the knuckle draggers who can't help themselves but comment on which "gal" looks cute in shorts when they mention women's sports at all. Some world class athlete is reduced to "eye candy" by someone who has a hard time tying his shoelaces on the first try. [ football seems to be their only reason to live some times and they see "their" universities as also living and dying on the basis of getting the best recruiting class in football]. Our world and our universities are filled with amazing people who are extraordinary in their fields of expertise. Unfortunately we don't have an opportunity to observe them doing their thing. It would be awesome. But for a few bucks [in the women's sports sometimes for nothing at all] we get to observe excellence, sometimes world class excellence. It's good for the soul to be around other humans [after all that's the real "team" we should be rooting for] who through hard work, perseverance and talent excel in what they choose to do. It's uplifting and inspiring if you see it for what it is. I hate the use of the word "hate" when someone uses it in the way it's been used on VT. Words have power. They mean what they mean. I hate someone because they are really good at what they do seems very odd to me. I hate excellence. I hate world class talent. Typing this makes me feel queasy some how. Just my two cents.

I got a degree from one B1G university. I currently live near another. I am friendly with the staff of another. I used to live down the street from yet another. I have many ties to many prep players who have played for B1G schools.
Further, the success of B1G volleyball is reflective of the overall success of midwestern prep volleyball, of which I have been involved for multiple decades.
I hope that explains why I root for B1G volleyball.
At the same time, I just love the sport of volleyball. I want the sport to be more successful and more popular among the general public. I think it is bad for the sport to have all its competitive teams come from the same area. It's nice that NCAA volleyball is no longer a WAC extension of the PAC-10 championship like it was in the 90s. I grew up on the east coast with much family still there and I enjoy seeing North Carolina make some noise in the tournament.

Agree with OP and my entertainment-seeking self appreciates when folks type emotively. Mike Wolff is a paid BTN spinmeister so, duh, Inanity R Us. As for athletic conferences, alignment is all out of whack and being driven to irrelevance. The sea is changing as university administrators figure how best to improve economics/admissions through football/basketball and TV exposure. Football playoffs will drive further change and conferences will probably be in major flux for a couple decades til some balance is found to accommodate football, or til football dies due to litigation risk and/or waning participation.
So ya, loyalty to one's rooting interest and natural regional rivalries/interesting national rivalries, regardless of conference affiliation, are where it's at. Thanks rampageripster

"I'm rooting for my conference" is lame. For a fan of the Big 10, you're really rooting for PSU, a team that pounds your school with regularity, stands in the way of your school's success, and takes your top recruiting targets with impunity? That's like rooting for the school bully who smacks you upside the head and takes your lunch money just because you share a social studies class.
I went to Cal for undergrad/grad school, you think I'm rooting for Stanford, Washington or USC (wait, I just threw up in my mouth a little) so I can wear some mythical badge of regional pride and give %*$# to people on VT? Hell no - MIck's tears taste like a fine Bordeaux to me.
Weaksauce.
