According to Richkern.com Kylie Kuyava-DeBerg 6'3" 2017 OH from Hudson Iowa (Iowa Juniors) has verbaled to the Illini. I actually spoke with her dad when she was at an Illini match earlier in the season. He told me at the time that Illinois was at the top of his daughter's recruiting list. Do you know what other programs she was interested in?

Jackie Quade is a very exciting player I think she can start playing if she gets to work hard when she gets to Illinois. Watched a few games of hers and she knows where to hit and mixes up her shots. I think she has the potential to be a Birks Junior.

Is Illinois a lock for the tournament? I know we're ranked, but so was Purdue last year and they missed it. We don't really have any good wins. But no horrible losses either.

10 seed? Did Beth Prince redshirt? You know there are only 16 total seeds, right? I don't see how Illinois gets one of them.

at least sweet 16! thought? Not trying to be negative, but I expect us to lose to Louisville, which pretty much would be the epitome of our season. We started out the season playing really well, but once we lost a match or two, we were snake-bitten and just couldn't manufacture a close win. I will say, though, if we can pull off a win against Louisville, that would be pretty substantial and could maybe help give us momentum as we head into the Regional Semis.

This has been a difficult year for Illinois volleyball, high expectations that have not been met. I happen to run across this preseason news article that appeared in the local newspaper and has re-invigorated my hopes for this Illinois team as it begins the third chapter of the season (that's preconference, B1G, and now postseason). This article has also brought back to mind why I have admired and respected Kevin Hambly since he became head coach of Illinois some seven seasons ago (or has it been eight). My view is that Coach Hambly honestly believes in a much larger view of competitive collegiate women's volleyball than winning-at-all-costs. I think it is more of finding a balance between winning and having his players develop as individuals and as teammates. This article takes on even greater heft for me in that it was written by veteran local sportswriter Loren Tate who generally concentrates his writing on the major men's sports, football and basketball. This was printed August 15th just after volleyball media day titled "Hambly Doesn't Breed Controversy": www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/recruiting/2015-08-15/tate-hambly-doesnt-breed-controversy.html

"We started using Her (birks) in plays that just werent garbage plays". So I'm not imagining that this takes place, but I am completely perplexed that he's aware and it's ok with him. Such a disappointment.
