I checked out the match. I thought a lot of players really struggled w/ the faster (Team USA) tempo. Not a lot of pretty kills from the leftside. It's really hard to evaluate the players based on this one match since the setters might not have instant chemistry w/ their hitters. Also they played 6 sets to 15, so they could mix the rotations. I thought that wasn't the best format. Playing such short sets did nothing to help the players get into a good rhythm. They should have just played 4 sets to 25 and 5th set to 15, and sub here and there.
Here's some of my impressions of the players:
Setters: Danemiller - Looked solid. But nothing wow about her play based on this match. Hancock - Looked okay. Didn't look great setting out of system. Probably because she's been instructed to set the Go even off a 1 pass. (I hate seeing that). And if folks were wondering about her serve, it was definitely a factor. She had some good runs. Not like 7 point runs but still game shifting. She served two in a row at Banwarth, getting a shank on the first and then an ace on the second. I think her serve will still give folks trouble at the next level to a lesser degree.
Outsides: Falyn - I forgot how talented she is. She could become a star if she ever reached her full potential. I think she's improved having played a few years of pro ball, but she has a long ways to go. At times, she'll pass dimes. Pick up big blocks. She'll crush the ball in system and out of system. But then she'll make dumb hitting errors and make weird shanks. I think she missed maybe 3 serves in a row. 2 of them really badly. I think w/ Falyn, it's an issue of mental toughness. Being able to maintain focus. Also super fast tempo isn't the best for her as she's not fleet of foot. Overall, she did a decent job. She carried a heavy load in passing and hitting and held up okay. I'm rooting for her, but she needs to really up her game. Frantti - I thought she was the best passing OH in the 4 games she played. Didn't seem like much of a factor offensively until the very last set. I'm hoping she'll make big improvements and I'm glad we have a collegiate underclassman OH training w/ Team USA. Gardner - She's at least quick enough to hit the fast tempo, but she doesn't contact the ball at a high enough height to be very effective against well formed blocks. Also her passing will need a lot of work. Simpson - Pretty impressive. Not sure on the hitting percentage but I'm wondering if she was the most efficient leftside attacker. Her passing will be an issue at the next level but it wasn't horrid. I thought she did bring a court presence, a confidence that I didn't always see in some of the other OHs. Walch - She held up but didn't really wow in any department. I think the tempo was too fast for her.
Liberi: Banwarth - Not sure why they played her in this match. I know she's very good but vets often phone it in. Moster and Robinson - I think they're solid but won't be challenging for a libero position. Robinson is another Nicole Davis type. Good reflexes, capable of really athletic digs, but can't pass consistently.
Opposites: Hamson - Struggled the most w/ this tempo as one would expect. There's really no point in trying to set her quick, particularly out of system. I'd be curious to see how she handles hitting a more normal set against good intl competition. If they're intent on having Hamson hit quick, then she should just forget about playing for Team USA in this quad. Holston - Can hit the fast tempo. She looked solid, but I don't recall her getting tons of sets. Lowe - Looked the best of the OPPs. She made the best of her opportunities. Could hit the fast tempo. Made a few good digs. I would like to see her in game situations where they feed her the ball more. Also, she's super tall. She looks taller than the other girls listed at 6'4.
MBs: I'll just say that none of the middles really shined offensively due to the misconnections. We're so used to seeing Ajanaku and Washington bury the slide in college, but we didn't really see that tonight. (I forget if Washington ever played on Hancock's side). That's a very athletic foursome. Washington really got some nice serves in. Alhassan is a very promising blocker.

I watched the entire 6 (short) sets and they were switching players so everyone ended up winning some....sets till 15 were way too short. I took some pics and video but no idea how to post it here. I've seen all these players play better than what they did today. Still, it was awesome watching Micha serve and warming up with Inky, Washington playing against Micha, etc. Going to Seal Beach on the 16th for sure!

Sorry but would have to disagree about your opinion about Stevi Robinson.... She has been known for years for her ball control , she had one bad pass ! She's also been on the beach a few years and made the training block last year, had a injury taking her out of the gym again for 6 months!!! She's one tough person and once she's in the gym full time again you will see!!! She looked much more at ease in the last two sets !!! Still one bad pass doesn't make you in consistent .. Way to rack all the girls over , they have played one week together what did you expect? Their adjusting to just being on the court together, new girls new coaching style!!!

I happened to be in the area, so . . . I agree with the other posters. The offenses looked ragged--as to be expected. Slides were rare, though I did see Micah set Washington successfully on the slide, at least once. In warm-ups, Walsh and Gardner were really crushing the ball. I was prepared for them to make a statement. But I agree with the poster who said they didn't get enough elevation to be successful against the big block that all the various groupings offered. The most effective hitter, I thought, was Lowe, and it wasn't even close. Taylor Simpson also had a pretty good match, all around. Falyn was impressive one moment, not the next.
As for the middles, the connection with Ajanaku and the setters was iffy, as you could imagine, but when the set was there she had some monster kills, soaring over the block. Seeing her in person makes it very clear why fans drool over her talent.
Even these top players had difficulty, lots of it, with Hancock's serve. Frantti and Washington are only freshmen, so you have to give them some slack. Both looked like freshmen. The young'un who most impressed me was Alhassan.

Every hitter had at least a little trouble with the USA offense. Simpson was the most impressive OH. She was passing well and putting balls down! She was definitely my favorite out of all the OH. Walch, well she definitely has an arm on her! Gardner, if she wasn't struggling so much on passing, she'd probably be in discussion for one of the most impressive OH. Falyn, well she definitely is talented, but had a lot of trouble with the speed of the offense. If she can get accustomed to the speed, she would be very dangerous. She definitely needs to work on her mental toughness, but, with a regular offense, I think she'd pretty awesome. Middles were ehh... connection issues. Out of the setters, Danemiller was definitely the better setter out of the 2. Micha's serve wasn't much of a factor except for one game out of the 6 they played, but her serves during warm-ups were pretty nice. If she stays with team USA, it'll be because of her serve, not setting. Opposites, well Lowe took the cake on this one. Holston needs a couple more years, but looked good. Hamson really struggled with the speed of the offense. She'd be way more effective with a higher set, no doubt. That block she puts up on the right is scary though. Frantti looked good the last set when Micha was setting her, that's just about it. She really didn't stand out much compared to the other OH on the court. Didn't really like the 15 pt. games. They seemed to go by quick, and, like another poster mentioned, no hitter could really get into a rhythm hitting.

It wasn't just one bad pass, she just didn't really stand out. I thought Moster had more stand out plays than she did. I loved watching Stevi in the regional final against USC, but unless she improves a lot, I don't see much of a future with her and team USA.

Why was Falyn there? Due to her age?
