Here's my observations from last nights match:
Setters:
Micha: She was solid early and her serve was definitely a factor. I thought she struggled towards the end with set location and connection with her hitters. Not sure if part of that was due to the passing breaking down. Lexi: She struggled in the beginning but by the end I thought she was pretty solid. I thought she had better connections with her hitters at the latter part of the match.
Outside Hitters:
Falyn: She had her moments with hitting and blocking but she also had some issues with passing and serving. Frantii: She definitely has an upside to her which will be scary for collegiate teams. But she also had her "Freshman" moment when she completely stepped over the service line during one of her serves. haha. Gardner: She was the most effective outside hitter early putting down some impressive kills. Out of all the hitters i thought the faster tempo sets suited her well. Although once the passing broke down and she received higher out of system sets, the block clamped on her. Her passing was marginal . Simpson: I thought she was the most solid passer of the OH. She was passing nails in the beginning but had her moments of shanks towards the later part of the match. Hitting wise, I thought she was pretty effective but I'm not sure she has enough heat on the outside. But then again, I don't think Kim Hill has enough heat either and she ended up being MVP of the last tourney. Walch: I can't remember her passing many balls. She had a few good kills but i'm not sure if this system suits her .
Liberos:
In general, I wasn't overly impressed with any of the liberos tonight. No one stood out or made the "Holy Crap" that was an awesome dig type play. Of the 3, I thought Moster passed the best.
Opposites:
Hamson: I think she struggled with the quicker sets. Blocking was still solid especially when the opposing team had to set a higher set. Holston: I was expecting her to have more heat. She had her moments but nothing really stood out. Lowe: I have to agree with another poster, Lowe was the best of the Opposites. She had no problem with the quicker sets and she definitely had some impressive kills.
Middle blockers:
Ajanaku: I wasn't surprised that she struggled with the quicker slide sets. At Stanford, the slide sets to her are much higher. She did have a couple impressive hits in front of the setter when the timing was there. Alhassan: She is raw offensively. Alot of upside to her game. She's going to be beast blocking. Brown: I was surprised with her play. I thought she made some good plays on off sets. Her and Lexi had a couple a good connections towards the end of the match. Washington: Her specialty is the slide. I don't think I saw her hit in front of the setter. Of the four, she had the best connection on the slide with the setters.
Overall, I'm curious how these players develop with the national team and in college. I think the USA has a bright future with these up and coming players.

Was Washington playing on same side as Hancock? If so that could explain why she had best connection with setter.

Word is that Micha headed to Italy ....presto. I think she's going to play for Imoco Volley with Alisha Glass.

Interesting that two posters in attendance who watched the same match can have opposite opinions on whether Micha's serve was a factor or not. Without trying to sound like an answer key, Micha's serve was absolutely a factor.....when she didn't hit it in the net or long. Several players had trouble passing it anywhere near Lexi. I'd guess she had at least 3 aces and created several out of system swings for the opposite side.

She missed way too many serves in my opinion. She got a couple of aces. There was one set where she went on a run, but she didn't really go on any runs the other sets. When the passers passed her serve they weren't good passes, but other players who served floaters got aces and got the other team out of system too, so does that make their serve a factor as well? Idk, for as much hype as her serve brings, I didn't think it was much of a factor. Had she missed less serves, then that would be a different story.

I would imagine at the highest level just one run of 3 or 4 points at any point in the game could be the difference....and maybe enough to turn a match.

So yes, she got a chance to play with Hancock for at least a couple sets if not more.

You have a point, but I still stand by what I wrote. If she missed less serves, I'd be saying something different. I'm just speaking on this match alone, not projecting anything. But I will say that if she stays with team USA, it'll be because of her serve.
