I think you have missed the point completely. Nothing about what coaches are doing should make you lower your esteem of them. They are doing their jobs, and exactly what they should be doing. Is Apple not going to try and hire top talent even though they already have top talent? It is their responsibility, and there is not one ounce of unfairness to the players in the program or being recruited into the program. If I had a player or parent call me up and say "we just found out that the school I committed to has offered another player in my position I would say, "get used to it, and start competing, nothing is ever guaranteed" Heck, I would tell that to a 15 year old kid in our club when new great players join. Anything short of that is giving kids a lesson in how the world DOESN"T work, which is a disservice. What do you think the freshman at Stanford are thinking right now after the class they just landed? I will give you a hint, the same thing the jr class was thinking when the freshman class committed. It's sad we live in a world where any kid, parent or fan is outraged by having to compete for what they want, or they feel entitled to something just because they are there. Lastly, great players and teammates arent threatened by talent, they know it makes the team and them better. While kids have tons of reasons for transferring, the #1 is they don't want to have to compete, they want a program that ensures they will play. Spot on. That is why it is so important for players to choose a school that they would still want to go to regardless of volleyball.
Most players are competitive and want to compete, but their definition of "compete" is narrow and only includes competing against another team and playing, not having to compete on their own team for playing.
Maybe ....just maybe...even have a chance to compete for a National Championship.....when it ain't gunna happen where you are.

I know you both are right. Why does this remind me of a "used car salesman" though? If coaches are so committed to getting the best players I find it hard to believe they are always honest in trying to land the top players. In fact I find it hard not to believe they don't use the same line to try to land every good player they want (at that particular time). Please tell me I am wrong.

It is sales, and of course there are good and bad used car salesmen. "Saying we think you are great, and see you making a big impact" isnt dishonest. "We see you as a starter" isn't either. Both can be true, and a player not start or excel. It means they have the ability to do that, but others do as well, and they have to earn that. Those kids are getting full scholarships and given the opportunity to compete, not guaranteed the right to play.

Now that it seems many of the absolute top players have been cherry-picked by colleges for 2016 and 2017, I predict that 2018 will be a crucial year for PSU to find another special recruiting class with quantity and quality. I have no idea who the top 2018 players will be so I am looking for your suggestions. Will 2018 be a deep year for talented vb players or is it just to early to find some players with very good potential? Yes, I am serious. Here in Iowa bored, at the HP championships...here are the top kids born in 2000 and 2001 (2018 and some 2019 grads), and unlike what some of the post on this board have implied, they are all being recruited (multiple big time schools here just for tryouts, and based on last year in Tulsa, there will be dozens of the top schools (PSU, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Washington et al) watching the the 2018 class, once the tourney starts tomorrow, several of which already here watching them very closely... A1 select Red (top team) playing against international 96-97 DOB (Womens) teams (start off against Australia Tuesday first match): Mica Alison setter Holly Campbell MB web site www.hollycampbell.yolasite.com really high volleyball IQ from Austin Julia Devine Mia Grunze Kendall Kipp Brook Nuneviller (has been at OH in past at HP camps, the past two summers has been the top libero, which she plays at her club Az aspire) Erin O'Leary setter commited to Michigan for 2018 Taylor Roberts Emilee Rohrer Brooklyn Schirmer Haley Warner (Opp, Gatorade POY for Arkansas as a 9th grader, all American Max preps) Don't have time to list the other 4 teams, but 2018 studs throughout this (DOB 2000-2001) age group here...some notables include Devin Chang, setter from California on Blue (third team), Ella May Powell, 6' setter onWhite (2nd) team, IMO best setter of the bunch (but I am not a coach), Rachel Ahrens (white team, Sunshine OH, plays up, considered by many to be best OH in the country for 2018, suspect her speed hurt her this year, they seem to go with height and speed before power...when Rachel hits it everyone in building knows it, and suspect lesser teams run for cover...a kid that I think will be as good as Kat McCoy (libero at Texas), first name Jenna, dont know last name, cant find her in AES but I have seen her here, IMO she is the reason TBVA 15-1 won AAU open this year, took third USAV nationals in open... I have heard that every one of these kids have multiple offers from big name schools...cant confirm except for Erin O'Leary to Michigan in 2018 (posted by her club)

TAV 15 Black is looking pretty consistent as they won the Mid-East Qualifier last week and now the Pacific Northwest Qualifier. Names to remember: LS Sienna Sechrist RS Avery Stowell MH Andreea Padura S Courtney Buzzerio, Erika Alvagna L Reva Blitz I hope Penn State is taking notes. Maybe you could email them and make them aware of who the top prospects are, I am sure they dont have the access to the same list of kids posted on every vb publication, blog, fansite on the planet. You have listed about 20 kids they should be recruiting even though you have never seen any of them play, or spoken to anyone who has? Why do I have to see them? If they come to PSU for a visit the staff will evaluate them there.

PSU front row list : OH,IL,WI,NJ,KY,CO,PA. That looks like regional recruiting, not national recruiting. If RR had the recruiting watershed area of TX or CA I can only imagine the teams he would have developed. You literally have no idea what you are talking about. They recruit players hard from everywhere including Texas and CA. A top tier kid from either of those places in most cases will go to Texas or Stanford if they meet admission requirements. I didn't say RR didn't try to recruit TX and CA but that his teams would probably be even stronger if he landed some of the truly elite players from those states. Please cut back on the coffee Dorothy.

Dorothy, you are an idiot! In 2008 PSU recruiting class had Kabbes, Shifflet, and Tice. In 2013 the class include Robertson, Krause, and Muller. Please check the facts before you go spouting off. That's not fair, MTC. In 2008 and 2013 classes, how many of those were/are on scholarships? What does that have to do with it? I was simply stating the facts that PSU does NOT have a great recruiting class every year like Dorothy was trying to sell.

Diana Brown is a 6'1 setter she has already committed to Illinois I'm thinking she will be a top setter in the class of 2018

Milwaukee Sting 15 gold already has 4 committed Brooke Anderson - Iowa Stat Claire Mosher - Marquette Grace Cleveland - Purdue Katie Schoessow - Marquette
I am not sure if Haley Warner out of Arkansas has committed yet, I stopped reading this thread on the second page as it degenerated into a PSU/Stanford pissing contest essentially

Erin O'Leary (2018 Michigan commit), Haley Warner, Holly Campbell, et al of the USA Select A1 red (15 and under top USAV team) just beat Australian junior national (19 and under) team in 3 (best of 5) at the HP championships...long way for Aussies to travel (Des Moines),but good to see the young American girls competing successfully at a high level

Does anyone know who is on the radar for Haley Warner from Arkansas? Gatorade POY as a freshman.

HP championships in Des Moines Iowa almost over, I did not see all the matches, but watched MANY of them...these are the top 42 2018 kids in the country competing against the top regional 17u players, and some 19u teams (Dominican Republic, Canada, Australia) and not just holding their own, but beating many/most of them
My quick thoughts:
Jenna Hampton 2018 libero offered by PSU last week, best 15 libero I have seen since Kat McCoy at Southlake (now starting libero for Texas, and was as a freshman)
No question that Haley Warner the best OH in the class...scary good, lefty that can put the ball down consistently behind the 10' line, many times going over blockers...
Holly Campbell Austin TX 2018 MB currently the best of the top MB here, in a class of very athletic 2018 middles...her footwork has improved dramatically, betting she has more blocks than all other middles here combined, and betting she had more serving aces than all other middles combined...not as powerful as the three middles on the second team, who are all quicker and may have more upside
IMO even though she was not selected for the top team, Ella May Parker top setter for 2018...6' tall, and her height a HUGE difference maker re blocking, even more important since the teams all run a one setter offense
