Hannah getting monster kills on almost anything sent her way. Terminating very well so far in the RS spot.

Handley set for Schau against Moorhead. Eggert came in for Sarah and got an overpass kill in limited action.

I really liked the quick sets from SSS to the middle (both Lohman and Paige Tapp).

Always wondered what would happen if the gophers played Concordia .... We found out today - 25-7, 25-12. Thought it would be closer. Too much tapp's, wilhite, Goehner, and SSS. Looked a lot like northern lights out there.

The Gopher block gave Concordia no chances. Sarah looked a lot hotter against them and really blocked well - really, all front row players did. Schau had a couple great defensive plays against them as well. Honestly thought it would be a lot closer.

You guys have some great talent, the Tapps should be AA this year and so fun to watch. Where was Goehner playing?

Mankato really displayed some grit and good defense. Really nice middle in Krista Hassing. The libero and setter were both very skilled as well. Gophers looked a little worn in the Mankato match. Beal really hit well against them, I thought.

Mankato started very strong in both matches and was right with (or ahead of) the Gophers until about the 10- point mark.

Some final impressions from me and then I'll pipe down for a while:
Hannah Tapp: Looks great. Probably in the best shape of her life. Really could pummel the ball from the right side. Nice, heavy arm. I love her there, and I really hope to see her there this fall one way or another. So much power, plus a smart hitter and blocker: great combo. Likely ended up first or second in kills overall today.
Paige Tapp: Connected beautifully with Swenson on quick-31 sets to the middle. They've clearly done this before. Outstanding blocker, obviously. Not much more to say about that. Fast player with a fast arm, but not still not a terribly heavy armswing. Still, the connection with the setter is generally so good that she is able to terminate.
Molly Lohman: Basically the third Tapp sister. Nice connection with the middles; great blocking instincts. Her serving game was so-so today, but she seems to have good placement. Really can't fault her on anything. We are lucky to have her.
Sam Swenson: Played about 50% of the time. She can simply do more with a shaky pass. Dynamic setter who connects well with all. Not sure about her blocking due to the 6-2 thing, but very sound player overall. Still learning some of the finer nuances of the D1 game, but honestly nothing that I can think of to fault. Had two service aces against Concordia today, if my memory serves.
Katie Schau: Did a nice job overall today. Kept the Gophers in some tight defensive situations. Seems to lead well vocally.
Erica Handley: Played the least of the three primary setters. Disguises sets fairly well. Schau is still ahead defensively, but Handley might have the better setter hands of the two.
Carly Rasmussen: Served a few times. Had a nice assist to Alyssa Goehner out of the back left in an out-of-system play.
Dalianliz Rosado: Sets a nice second ball. Nice passer. Performance seems to ebb and flow a bit throughout matches, but generally a very sound player.
Alyssa Goehner: Really showed today that she can be a workhorse outside hitter. Puts a lot of energy into her play. Very good passer, and also looked great hitting out of the back row. Nice, heavy kills. Not sure of stats, but likely first or second in kills overall.
Sarah Wilhite: Started a bit slowly in the first match but seemed to find herself after that. Pretty good passer and good digging instincts. Nice blocking overall, especially as the day went on, and a good mix of attacks. I still wish she would rely less on tipping and roll shots. She can be effective.
Maddie Beal: Not the most imposing blocker, but blocked well. Assertive hitter who really showed some aggression as the day went on, which was great to see. Nice ball control from the little we were able to see. Really a solid all-around player.
Margaret Eggert: Played for Wilhite in one match and Goehner in another, but saw limited action overall. Has a heavier arm, but not a very quick swing, if that makes sense. Still looks like she has potential for growth with this team. Did not play in the back row.

Gophers handled UMD easily, too. CU also beat UMD although scores were fairly close.
Mankato played the Gophers the toughest. IMO, this was because they were able to serve more effectively.
Swenson is the first freshman Gopher setter I've seen in ages who has really impressed me. Others have shown potential, but Swenson is already past being potentially good. Not sure about her defense and she didn't play the front row, but her hitters were ALWAYS taking healthy rips at her sets, a really good sign. Schau played much better in the last 3 matches after being a little shaky v. UMD. They both benefited from some really excellent passing.
I have to say the Gophers looked really good today, especially compared to last year.

UMD did not have Julie Rainey, a senior last year, and a terrific libero. CU had everyone, however, including Schlaak. Nice to see her back on the court.

For those that saw the gophers today is SSS the starter? Or will they run a 6-2 w Schau? Where does Handley fit in if at all? Love the gophers fight today!
