I don't know if they will do the 6-2 this fall, but I was pleasantly surprised by it today. Swenson was the starting setter and Hannah was the starting RS. Schau set when Beal played RS. Handley occasionally played in Schau's place.
The thing is, we have Santana back this fall, not to mention wildcards Toni Alugbue and Taylor Morgan. They could really shuffle things up from the lineup we saw today. For instance, we could see Wilhite on the RS and Hannah back as a middle starter in a 5-1 with Swenson setting (just one possibility).

For those that saw the gophers today is SSS the starter? Or will they run a 6-2 w Schau? Where does Handley fit in if at all? Love the gophers fight today! She's the starter.

Seems like Wilhite for Beal is the obvious move when Santana is healthy, if they stick to this 6-2.
Goehner needs to be on the court. I agree that Alugbue is the wildcard. Sarah needs to find consistency. It's nice to have options, I'll bet.

I do think that Beal really did a good job, however, and she absolutely deserves any playing time she does get. She really worked hard out there and was pounding away through the block all day. QUESTION for anyone there yesterday: In your honest opinion how does Swenson compare to, say, Carlini (had to go there), Palmer, or Hancock in overall quality of sets, placement, etc.? I was there but I will be the first to admit that I am not a great judge of setting capabilities and I wasn't sitting at a very good angle (in retrospect) to get much more than a basic look at our setting. What I saw was good, but how do you think it compares?

Really tough question, especially since she was only playing the backrow. But I'll tell you a simple way to judge the quality of the sets: are the hitters taking good swings and are they getting blocked?
The answer to the first part is yes. The second part is no, but they weren't facing a Big10 level block either.
I think she's a very good setter, fwiw.

In terms of lineup this year, I think the Gophers would be best off going with a lineup like this. I really doubt they go with anything besides a traditional 5-1 btw.
OH- Daly, Goehner MB- Paige, Lohman S- Sam RS- Hannah (with a backrow sub, i.e. Schau, Alugbue, or Wilhite) Libero- Rosado

The way they make up for Goehner on the left, however, is running a 6-2.
Now, it may turn out that they think Sam's setting will make up for Goehner's offensive liability (and Sam's blocking), but, with this personnel, I would not be surprised to see them stick to a 6-2.
Alugbue remains the wildcard.

The 6-2 worked quite well yesterday, IMO, but it also seemed to burn subs a bit needlessly. Kudos to the players who came in, though. Letting our attackers adjust to one (great) setter might be the best thing for this team, though, to establish some level of consistency. As much as I like this 5-1 lineup, I think Wilhite would be extremely unhappy just coming in as a backrow sub again (although she COULD still hit from back there). Goehner has been more impressive to me lately though, even blocking well. I suppose if we need a HUGE block, Wilhite would be the one to go-to. Wilhite is good and reliable in virtually all aspects, but her biggest problem right now is that she doesn't really separate herself from other players in any aspect. Jack of all trades...At any rate, we are AWFULLY lucky to have both Wilhite and Goehner to choose from.

I'd also like to know more about Swenson's blocking and defense before I completely commit to this 5-1, though.

I would be very surprised if they do not play the 6-2 next fall. Hannah and sarah at opp really makes our blocking more effective. I also think the 6-2 takes a lot of pressure off the outsides as they arent hitting against as many solidly formed blocks with all the hitting options available. Of course if the serve receive goes south then the setters will have to force the sets to the middle and opp to keep that which i think they will do. Play aggressive and it will be fun

Goehner reminds me of Bates for WI, if SSS can feed her fast tempo balls she should be able to beat the block and flourish. She's a great athlete, hope Hugh finds a way to utilize her strengths, like Shef did for Bates.
