Loyola and Lewis are certainly the best of the final four, at least in these matches, and that's all that really counts.

Definitely right. It would be nice to watch tonight's matches on TV. ESPN puts all sorts of obscure sports on its alternate channels that are far less interesting and exciting than men's volleyball. The men's game needs to be marketing itself better to generate interest beyond it's current level. ESPN just isn't going to put UCI, Lewis and Loyola. If it were USC, Penn St., Ohio St. and UCLA then maybe. The decision to not televise the semi-finals was made long before anyone knew which teams would be playing.

Both post-match news conferences are highly entertaining. Irvine very hesitant to give Loyola credit + lots of swagger from the defending champs. Worth watching.

Someone on these posts commented that Stanford was tired by the time they played Loyola from all the traveling last year. Loyola traveled to California...yeah they looked really tired against UCI.
Let me guess, its only one match --- UCI would beat Loyola if they played again right?

Both post-match news conferences are highly entertaining. Irvine very hesitant to give Loyola credit + lots of swagger from the defending champs. Worth watching. I think the reason UCI had a hard time giving credit to Loyola in the post game was because they don't understand how Loyola plays volleyball. Loyola and Lewis play a completely different brand of volleyball than MPSF. MPSF teams run plays and have strategy and try to really understand the game. Loyola comes at you and tears the cover off the ball with a "dig me if you can" attitude. It works, but it's just physical brutality, so it's hard for Irvine to point out specific things that Loyola did to win. It's like the difference between Men's tennis and Women's tennis. Both really enjoyable to watch, but for different reasons.

If I'm reading between the lines, you just compared tMPSF to women's volleyball...

I'm just saying it's different. For example, I don't think Ricky would see the court in the MPSF. Heck, I don't even think he would be able to walk on. He's clumsy, and barely knows how to play the game. Half his kills were mis-hits. But in the Midwest, style points don't count as much. The boy gets the job done. When you lose to a team who's mis-hitting the ball, it's hard to come up with something to say in the post game.

I sure as heck hope you aren't a coach who has any responsibility on gauging potential.

Yeah right...

If his level of play was much worse at the beginning of the season that's a different story. There haven't been a ton of quality OPPs. Gevis would start for many teams. His height alone creates a ton of match up problems for opposing teams. Who wouldn't want a coordinated (not clumsy IMO) 6'11 OPP?
