I'm definitely of the camp that thinks it's a combo of Loyola playing really well and UCI playing horribly. It was a surprise based on Loyola's lackluster play on Tuesday.
I thought Tamir had a nightmare match. Looked tight. Got passive tipping too much. Then hit wide a lot. Missed critical kills on long rallies. Missed easy digs. Shanked lots of floaters. Did UCI have no depth on the outside to sub him out?

I think the telling stat is hitting errors...... 23 to Irvine vs 11 for Loyola (If I'm not mistaken). Blocking was pretty huge as well for Loyola.
I'm so impressed with Loyola's setter. He doesn't get near the respect he deserves.

Also, does anyone transition from defense to offense faster than Jaeschke? At least a 1/2 dozen times, the kid was sprawled out to make a dig; but he would be up in nano-seconds ready to attack from the pipe.

USA players that play like this are Reid priddy, Taylor sander. On the international stage, pretty much ALL Brazilian outsides. But the most efficient and powerful of all is Wilfredo Leon, pretty much Taylor sander but at 6'8 and even more powerful. Players like this are transcendent and are unstoppable when they are on.

Verdict on uci:
I never thought this team had enough experience to take it all this year. Sure Brinkley and la cavera had been there before, but their two previous champs, they were surrounded by seniors who were experienced (Hughes, Clark, tillie, Austin, McDonnell). As for championship experience, the other players played with too much nerves and the big stage got to them.
Loyola really showed their class as an a talented team, but just as importantly showed their poise with experience on the big stage. Before loyolas championship last year, they lost in three to uci in the semis in 2012. At this level and competitiveness, I just don't think you can skip the most important step of experience and growth, no matter how talented you are.
UCI will be exciting moving forward, they lose brinks and zlc, but hodges will step in at oppo and if Russell can maintain his grades, he will form a strong pair with hershko on the wings. Hershko will grow from this experience and I expect uci to be back next year.
