No question that the geographic center of college volleyball has shifted eastward. Anyone who doesn't realize that is in denial. I'm not sure how much credit goes to the NCAA or to the growth of club, but either way, it's generally a good thing for the sport It certainly moved a lot faster than the center for Lacrosse. Yes, indeed, although now that WVB has peaked (not including sand), isn't lacrosse the fastest growing NCAA sport? I seem to recall reading that recently. I still have a hard time with the distinction between lacrosse and field hockey, despite having spent some time on the East Coast.

wasn't it far more regionalized? Yes it was. You had several years where you had Hawaii / UOP / LBSU battling it out as #1 & #2 in the nation or Stanford / UCLA battling as #1 & #2 but due to strict regionalization, they were in the same region. From '86 - '91, they used a strict regionalization formula. It didn't matter if you had 3 of the top 4 teams in the nation in one regional (ex: 1986, #2 UOP, #3 UH, #4 SJSU, #5 SDSU all in the same regional), that's what they did. '92 One rule change. If the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the coaches poll were in the same region, the #2 team would be moved. '93 Next rule change. The top 4 teams nationally would be split apart. After that, my old memory starts to fall apart as to when they started to seed the top 8 and when they moved further away from the strict regionalization. Thanks, I knew it was more like the mens game years ago, but didn't want to go look it up. Anyway, the point then remains that JUST looking at FF appearances from NCAA inception to date needs to be taken with a grain of salt for those earlier years. As Dorothy said, without some semblance of a "national" tournament, final four appearances mean a lot less because you don't actually have to be among the best 4 nationally, but rather regionally.

BYU (1969-2014) has only had a losing season for three years. two of them in that last coach's Goulding's era. one in Lamb's. Michaelis *up 'til 2000* always had a ranked program. in only 9 years did the Cougars not go ranked; yet, they on a stealthy occasion had managed to sneak into a regional (or two) for at least a Sweet 16 finish. UH has been in a total of 16 FF finishes, no joke! *There's more and more a discovery of 'Eastcoast'ed biases on this errant prone blog site?. --- Colorado State & Pepperdine & TAMU are the programs which follow closely "behind". That BIK is right.

My Top Four
UCLA Penn St. Stanford Hawaii
Andy B. built a program, first to win the 1000+ wins mark Dave S. also built a program, second to reach the 1000+ win mark and is the active winning-est coach still yet. Russ R. another longtime coach. Built a very strong program. third coach to reach the 1000+ win mark still active today and if my hunch is right steadily creeping up to Shoji. last but not least.... John Dunning. what can i say coached Pacific for 16 yrs prior to coaching Stanford. has a few titles under his belt even though he didnt reach the 1000+ win mark.
I personally think Hollywood should make a movie like Draft day.

I'm thinking Shoji will retire very soon thus leaving only Russ in the league.

You really can't count the 80's for Penn State when they were running the team with only 3 scholarships (yes, Dorothy, that's "3"). Start when they joined the Big 10 starting in '91. Although PennState only had 3 scholarships when Russ took over the program in 79, I believe he had managed to get that number to 9 at the time they joined the Big10 in 1991. Joining the Big10 got him the last 3 scholarships and another assistant coach to become a fully funded sport. It's still very impressive that he was able make every NCAA tournament during that 12 year span with 3-9 scholarships during the 80's and every season since while fully funded.

Maybe a powerhouse list for each decade, starting with the 70's?
