I just watched the video of the match and came away with a few initial impressions. Weiskircher seems to have a better connection with more net players than Rivera. That's not surprising since Bryanna has been in the gym with them a year longer. Thelen is much improved and appears to be very comfortable and confident. She played well and looked like she was having fun. Holcombe played at least as well as Pierce and looked really poised for a freshman playing in her first collegiate match. Novakovic pretty much looked disengaged on the sideline. Whitney, Courtney, Washington, Frantti and Lee did pretty much what was expected. Not sure any team in the country can beat us at the net. Brianna has history also. Didn't she play with a few of her teammates on club ball also before psu. Frantti and Lee

The offense worked better with Weiskircher setting. She looked comfortable.
Holcomb gave perfect passes (except one service reception).
I do remember Rose giving some Seniors a shot as starters in past season, but switched them out quickly after the first set. It's like "show me you deserve the position."

It will be interesting to see who the starting L is today. Based only on last night, I would say Holcombe. It will also be interesting to see if Novakovic gets some court time today. I think Weiskircher will be the starting setter.

I think Weiskircher will be the starting setter. I would guess that too. Bryanna and Keeton start game 1 and Wilma and Kendall for game 2. Game 3 ?? Novakovic I'm not sure if she will see time over Lee on the Right Side.

It's like "show me you deserve the position." not "really" true. But them's the breaks and the kids have to keep their head up be ready, if/when the leash gets lengthened.

The Villanova match can't be deemed anything else but a struggle bus. PSU could not separate in any of the 3 games and almost blew game 2. Villanova was siding out way too easily.

Villanova's size at the net and their backcourt defense exposed PSU's weaknesses in ways that Buffalo and Stony Brook could not.
Our passing must get much better. When passing is on, Weiskircher has good connections with most of the pin hitters and middles. She struggles when she does not receive a good pass. It is also pretty clear that Weiskircher must improve her connections with certain players. She seems to connect well with Courtney and Frantti. Her connection with Whitney and Thelen leaves much to be desired.
Keeton Holcombe has a lot of potential as the L, but there is no way she can step in and fill Dom's shoes right away. While watching the match, I kept thinking over and over, "If only Dom or Lacy was out there."
In some ways, this resembles 2011 when we were breaking in a new setter and back court. Of course, Dom, Lacy and Micah all had enormous success but they struggled at first. However, we are in better shape than in 2011 simply because we have Whitney, Courtney, Washington and Frantti. Thelen also looks good and poised when on the court.
It is a work in progress. I don't think we will beat Stanford next weekend, but this will be a very good team by the time post-season comes around.
