Kahakai and Maglio played a lot better tonight. But Tai had another terrible night. Granato is the real deal, very smooth, seems to have really good volleyball instincts. Always in the right position. It will eventually be a real battle between Maglio and Mitchem for the 2nd middle position. Mitchem shows that she has a little more volleyball savvy, where to hit the ball, then Maglio seems to have. But maglios block is fantastic

When it comes to Tai, it just seems when she swings it is like she is swinging with her eyes closed. Most often swinging right into the block. My question, can she see the court, mainly the opposing players. Like Nikki says, she can not only see the block, but the players beyond the block also, so she knows where to hit the ball.

I really like how this Wahine team got better when the chips were down and the match wore on. A precursor for good things to come, I hope.

Did I miss it? Did I miss it?
Darn I missed it! Confounded meetings. I hate them.
Nice win ladies! Way to fight back when the going got tough!

Ten random thoughts:
1. Given how good Clare Anderson has been with her serving, I suppose we'll never see Guinasso and Ponce. For the life of me, I can't recall her passing much. However, I do remember her really nice bump set to Taylor in one rally.
2. This team will live and die by Taylor. If she doesn't produce, can we expect production from Greeley?
3. So, there's the A set to back row left, the pipe set to back row middle, and the D set to back row right. Why is there a need to separate the pipe set to B (back row slightly left of middle) and C (back row slightly right of middle)?
4. Why does Shoji allow Tai Manu-Olevao to jump serve? Ditto Higgins. They do some good but they also rack up a lot of service errors.
5. Granato has really good presence on the court. I haven't seen her termination abilities yet but I just love the way she moves on the court.
6. I still want to see more of Huff.
7. Although I want to see more of Mitchem, it'll come at the cost of Maglio -- and I like Maglio. So far, Mitchem hasn't done much, most likely because she's not familiar with the system yet. And if Mitchem eventually cracks the starting lineup, I'll feel bad for Maglio.
8. I want to say I want to see more of Koelsch, but I'm still not sure she can CONSISTENTLY carry the team with her setting. She can dump and backset, but I'm nervous about her other sets. She can probably connect with the middles, but I'm not sure. As they say in the NFL, everyone's favorite player is the backup quarterback -- until you put him in and realize why he's the backup -- and not starting -- quarterback.
9. I need to hear Olivia Magill tell one joke. Just one.
10. Savannah Kahakai was better against Wichita State. I still get the feeling she's going to be up and down all season.

I predict Mitchem and Granato will be starting by the time the Big West starts.

Was in and out of meetings so only caught snippets here and there. Gonna try and catch the replay later when I get home. Mahalo!

She wasn't spectacular, but she alleviated passing duties from Greeley and Kahakai, and was solid. Tai was not helping the wahine at all.

What did Dave say about keeping the ball in court? 12 service errors tonight. Too many! Gonna have to clean that up especially against good teams.

A really entertaining match. Pretty good volleyball considering it's still the first week of the season.
Wichita State looked really good. Their offense looked really quick which made it really difficult for Hawaii to get a lot of blocks to slow their offense for the first 2 1/2 sets. As others have mentioned Lehman is just unbelievably good and she really hurt Hawaii when she was in the front row. Hawaii won all of their sets when she rotated to the back. They'll do fine in conference and might be able to surprise a couple of the other ranked teams they have on the schedule. If they continue to improve over the course of the season, they should definitely be an NCAA tournament team.
Hawaii played significantly better than the first night, especially the back row. Kahakai did better. Still needs some work to really take control of the back court, but no big miscues like last night. Taylor had a great night. She kind of wore down at the end, which is a concern since this is only the first week, but she seems to be ready to take the role of the go to hitter. Magill also looked like she was ready to take a lot of swings in the front row and while Higgins had a couple of mis-sets to her, it is so much better than last year.
Passing still needs some work and Hawaii needs to get more production out of the left and second middle position. Also, they really need to work on stopping the middle attack. The better teams will have a potent middle attack, and Hawaii has to learn to slow it down. They were only able to get blocks when Lehman was in the back and Maglio was able to load up on the left.
I also read a lot about Olevao in this thread. I agree that she is not consistent, but I am always surprised to see all this hostility and frustration towards her and Shoji. In the ideal, Olevao was never pegged to be a go to player, let alone a starter. She burned her redshirt year in 2012 so Hawaii had an outside hitter available when Croson was suspended from the team. And had Croson not transferred out, the 2013 line up would have likely been Hartong, Croson and Taylor at the pins, with the 2014 line up probably looking like Croson, Taylor and Greeley. Olevao was not a top 100 Senior Ace and I think the only other player to be a starter since the list came out was Hewitt. All other starters, excluding liberos, have been top 100 in their class. Olevao has tried to set up to be the offensive outlet Hawaii needed when there were few to no options.
I will agree that now Shoji has options and he needs to re-evaluate the position. But again, I'm just incredibly surprised at how much hostility there is towards a player who has tried to go above and beyond.
