just watched the recording of the match.
give wichita st a lot of credit, they're not afraid of playing in front of a big crowd or against ranked opponents. lehman is so dynamic for them. they run their offense through the middle, which says a lot about their passing also. their passing was great ... low fast arcs on the passes to the setter, kind of like long beach st. what they're missing is an outside hitter who can at least match the output of lehman in the middle. i hope what shoji said after the match is true, and this wichita st goes on after last night and not lose more than 3 or 4 matches the rest of the season. that would really help hawaii's RPI.
taylor and magill were money last night. both players were going over well formed blocks at times.
kahakai was leagues better last night, on floor defense, and especially passing. still room for improvement, of course, but she wasn't frozen on defense and serve receive. shaking off the nerves.
magill got more sets than either greeley or olevao (although olevao did come out for the last set and during other stretches). still though, higgins is finding magill often and early, and that bodes well.
it'll take pressure off of taylor. establishing her as the go-to hitter is a given. now i'd like to see at least one of the other outside hitters compliment her. i'd like to see greeley get into the double digit kills in a match like this. she is low error, and is hitting for a decent percentage so far (.269, and .350+ last night). now can she step it up and really go for it on her shots, even if she sprays a few errors.
the irony is that olevao is the opposite. she seems to go for it on almost every shot, even when the situation doesn't call for it. hence a lot of the errors, particularly getting blocked a lot. both have to find that balance on their shot attempts.
all in a all, a solid win against a well-coached team that will help hawaii's RPI greatly over the course of the season.

i'd like to echo what roy had said -- there doesn't need to be so much hostility toward olevao. she's obviously struggling, but she's also obviously giving her all out there. at the end of the day, she has always done what coaches have asked of her ... being thrust into the lineup when others (croson) had to be removed for a time for failure to keep up the commitment to the team, or to take more of a role when others have been injured or couldn't step up.
she didn't come in with the accolades of other recruits, so maybe she was never intended to be the type of player that is relied upon for so many touches. under different circumstances the last 3 years, I could have seen her develop into an opposite (rather than a 6 rotation passer and outside hitter). i've advocated that at times, and so have other posters on here. (she's pretty dynamic hitting on the right side anyway.)
she's clearly improved over the years, mainly in the physical aspects of her game. she's jumping higher, is a much more powerful hitter now, and an improved blocker. she even has a lethal jump serve. but all of these improvements is is limited greatly by the lack of consistency, as we all know.
two matches in, and i think we're all (or maybe just some are) hoping she will play 'just consistent enough' to stay in the lineup. but with all the quality recruits and options now sitting on the bench, the team needs (and the fans want) the output from her position to be more than 'just consistent enough.'
she may end up losing her starting spot at some point (and it looks like it might be headed that way), but like others have said, i'd like to see it happen more organically, rather than because fans on a message board are clamoring for it.

Again, bloggers on this site have diverse opinions but are much more informed but BLUF are all fans of UH volleyball and thats why this Blog is so interesting. Again, i don't see any this as a condemnation of Olevao but more of the decisions that have put in the role she finds herself in. Unlike me, many of the posters have been in the volleyball scene for years and are students of the game. They understand the difference between hype and reality and with this year i sense the frustration with having a new dimension in options while we still keep throwing in a nickel expecting a dollar song. Volleytalk is the "Donald Trump" of volleyball blogs where nothing is sacred even opinions of a coach who has sat on top of the mountain for 41 years. I've learned so much from posters and truly think that folks who desire all "sweetness" should go over to Cindy's blog. LOL.

Wichita State has an interesting lineup. They run their setter opposite Lehman (middle). Then in Ro 4, Hiebert (S) blocks in the middle. She blocks right in 5 and 6. It sets up some different serve receive formations and patterns.
