The good news is that if the Wahine can play this badly and still win, that's something.

Greeley with a double-double tonight. Should've been the Player of the Match!

I think we will step up our Game against American. Hope Granato starts though. And Mitchem. Hopefully less setting to Taylor and more middles involved. Higgins needs to wake up not to mention get real serious. I think in that last timeout she looked as if she didn't care at all for a second when Dave gave into his last T.O. Dave needs to wake up real fast and say this to EVERY girl that you can be easily benched if you are not playing well. Some other girl on UH roster wants it more than the other. Higgins thinks she's getting too comfortable and doesn't take it too seriously. Give Kendra an opportunity to set a game. I know Kendra is new, but Higgins have been setting this team ever since uiato left. Give Kendra a chance to run the offense. If so, higgins will have that mentality that she can be easily replaced and needs to take it real seriously. Just my opinon everyone.

Greeley the silent hero - 12 kills hit .345 Took the words out of my mouth. Kalei very steady as always. Magill, too. Nikki cannot and I repeat CANNOT carry the load for this team. Others need to step up. And Dave, PULL TAI EARLIER when she's struggling! Leaving her in to see if she'll come out of a funk won't cut it!

The good news is that if the Wahine can play this badly and still win, that's something. Kinda scary too because Iowa might just be a sleeper and make some noise. It's only a few games in so they might actually get better when their conference starts.

Have you all noticed that there is a major part of the Wahine offense that has been missing the last 4 matches, that is the SLIDE. I believe this is one major reason why Mitchem should be starting. Magill does not run the slide, and Maglio is very hesitant to run it, but Mitchem loves to run the slide. It is one of her favorite plays. The only reason she has not run it more is that she is still getting use to the Wahine offense.

Iowa outplayed Hawaii, this could have easily been a loss to a bottom of the conference B1G team. Shoji and his team need to wake up. I miss those days when Wahine teams could pass and play defense. This team is still struggling at a few positions,. That combined with Shoji's stubbornness will be thie downfall of this team.

Maybe that's why recent UH threads are sub-par this season. So much potential smacked down by selfish traditions that will hinder the true strength of this team. so disappointing for now.

boy, hawaii looked like they were the team vacationing. no energy or sense of urgency at the start, and it took a while for them to get it going.
iowa had a great game plan and scouted hawaii well. their libero olsen is a solid passer and defender, and plays with such confidence. keala was not afraid to set the slide, even on tough passes. and her hitters did as much as they could to avoid the hawaii block, they tipped and gave hawaii lots of off-speed stuff, forcing hawaii to try to be more disciplined and honest on defense.
taylor's hitting percentage came back down to earth tonight, which will happen as teams focus their defense on her, but i would also say that a lot of her errors were on poor sets from higgins. higgins struggled with her location tonight to the right pin, and to her middles. taylor seemed to often be chasing a set that was dying inside. and when the match gets tight, higgins will revert to undersetting her middles.
olevao again struggled early when shoji elected to use her through all 6 rotations, and then, of course, her hitting improved when she platooned her spot with granato. the evidence is mounting, if not already evident that olevao and granto should split playing time, until (or if) one of them can win the position outright. (shoji even tried subbing huff in for granato in the front row during set 2 ... why not give that an extended try?)
granato has a serve that can bother opposing passers. shoji put her in for all 6 rotations in set 3, and she had a great run blocking, but not so great hitting. she still has a ways to get comfortable. even her passing was shaky at times, but still more stable than olevao's.
greeley, again, so steady. did well to mix up her shots more tonight. hit a few more line shots, and she needs to bust out that sharp angle shot a little more! she's perfectly capable of getting up and hitting it straight down inside the block. the defenders back there are just waiting for her deep cross court shot every time there's a well formed block in front of her.
magill ... good blocking night. the set wasn't always there for her. she might've had double the amount of kills if they were. she needs to go up and hammer more of those overpasses, rather than passing them!
the up ref was atrocious tonight.

We need production offensively from that Middle 2 position! Tommorow will be the 5th game of the season and Mitchem is the answer but she is being under utilized offensively or lack of sets there of. I think we (fans) and the coaching staff should stop using the excuse that she is still getting acclimated to Div 1 (which is true to a point) however when Mitchem is in there she seems to provide a spark even from the one or two sets she seems to only get. Mitchem belongs in there and Higgins needs to make better decisions. And where is the slide? If Mitchem is still adapting why has the slide been absent from the setter? It seems that Higgins is not comfortable doing this as evident by her play. We need to start seeing some gametime reps so Mitchem can do the stepout. NO ATTEMPT BY THE SETTER SHOWS NO WORK IN PROGRESS!! Higgins has improved this off season with her set locations but still struggles with her decision making. After tonight I hope Dave see's that Greeley should be OH1 and Granato should always be in the backrow for Tai and not just sometimes. Nikki Taylor is our number 1 option but there was no need to set her that many times tonight!

i haven't read what everyone is saying, because most of what i have been reading has been nothing but negative one after another. i am not excusing their terrible play tonight at all. because how they played right was disappointing and unacceptable.
but people were underestimating Iowa before the match began, and that was something i didn't do. i was concerned with how this game could have turned out. just like i am worried about Saturday's match as well.
but how about people start pointing out the bright spots of the game as well. Greely was amazing, she seriously needs to be recognized more. we got a stellar performance from Granato, who i firmly believe that after tonight's showing, she has earned herself a starting spot over Tai. the most entertaining thing for me was the blocking. they went from zero blocks after set one, to over fifteen to end the night. that was so awesome. lol.
Higgins is taking a lot of heat, so i refuse to put more heat on her. i feel bad that people run their mouths about how bad she is, yet honestly they probably shouldn't talk, because they are no better. she is human, and i get frustrated with her set locations, but i could never do what she does, so...
everyone is allowed to have their input, but we are so focused on picking at all the negatives, that we just don't see all the positive things.
i say this was ugly, but Hawaii did show that their blocking is very much a threat once it gets going.

With Longo and Mendoza, Hittle, Brandt, Maeda, Kaaihue, I never forgot they were in the game. I always seem to do that with Kahakai. I hope she changes that. i thought kahakai had a solid night. passed well, and got some nice digs. she's getting better at anticipating the tip shot. i'd like to see her put some more velocity on her float serve. that said, let's not be revisionist about the other players you've mentioned. longo, yes, i wish hawaii had her for 4 years (instead of just 2). mendoza struggled in the first half of the season as a starting libero, and was even replaced by kahakai for a time. hittle, although she found her calling at libero, was supposed to be a 6 rotation outside hitter. but (like another outside hitter on this year's team) never found the consistency to play all the way around. brandt came in to play in the back row, but she was never relied upon to pass. she was in there to serve and play defense (which i will agree, she did very well). maeda was better as a role player than as a starting libero. when you noticed her on the court as libero, it was because she went into the shank tank. even kaaihue took some time to get acclimated to the libero role. it showed during her first two years, and she didn't really get comfortable in the position until her junior ans senior seasons.

The good news is that if the Wahine can play this badly and still win, that's something. but the bad news is that watching them play ugly exacerbated my acid reflux (or maybe it was the beer and nachos) ... and i think gave all the old folks sitting around me tonight high blood pressure.
