Yeah, his GA Tech team was also fun to watch some years ago, even though I was nervous most of the time. I wonder if he would be interested in coming here when Dave retires? That's where he's from. I was looking at him and kept saying "where the heck I seen him before"...2003 Regional Finals vs G. Tech. Didn't G-Tech have a hawaii setter running their offense that year? I could be wrong. I looked up Kele Eveland's bio, and apparently she's not from Hawaii, although her name sure sounds like she could be. Looks like she's been hired back at Ga.Tech after several years on Dietre Collins' staff at SDSU.

Shymansky's 3 middle system is fun to watch , especially with Keala at the helm but UCLA should win, I think Iowa played beyond their potential last night. Yeah, his GA Tech team was also fun to watch some years ago, even though I was nervous most of the time. I wonder if he would be interested in coming here when Dave retires? i like how his demeanor and energy on the sidelines was contagious for his player. he stood practically the whole time, and was real vocal on the sidelines. his complaining of calls was meh ... but he energized his players and refused to let them get down.

Apparently, Kirsten Sibley was at the match. I wonder what she thought of:
1. the match, 2. the SSC environment, 3. Dave Shoji's demeanor vs. Bond Shymansky's demeanor -- gametime and in the huddle, 4. the body language of the Wahine, and 5. the rain-drenched city and campus.

Read a lot of thoughts on the match from other posters and I think there is merit to some of the criticism for this match. Iowa played really well in the first set and Hawaii had a hard time adjusting to what they were doing. They ran such a quick offense that Hawaii looked like they were still getting used to what they were doing. Brobst had a great first set and Loxly did a very nice job running a quick offense.
While Hawaii struggled in the first set, it was very nice to see them adjust. While the match was close, it was obvious Hawaii made the in game adjustments to pick up the tip. And unlike last week where they couldn't do anything to slow down Wichita State's middle, Lehman, Hawaii was able to disrupt Iowa's go to hitters. They stopped the slide with some good serving and did a pretty good job picking up the shots when Iowa ran that play.
The negative is that Higgins did struggle. It is frustrating to see that after last week, the middle didn't get set high enough. Like others, I'm not convinced Koelsch is the answer, but Higgins does need to get the middles going. And I don't like that Taylor is taking that many swings. She became less effective as the night went on and Higgins needs to get the other players involved.
Generally, I see Shoji's problem with this team. I thought after set one, Olevao did a nice job. While inconsistent, she definitely has the biggest arm and provides the best offensive option on the left. Greeley was solid but not sure if she can be the L1. Taylor on the left gets more swings but takes away the big block on the right. Granato is a better all around player than Olevao and she didn't get a lot of chances to swing in this match, but still not sure if she can terminate all the time. Still, this is only the second week of the season, so we'll have to hope that Hawaii can peak at the right time near the end of the season.

It'd be a surprised if she did decide to come here,,but I'm rather sure she's leaning on not coming here if she gets into one of those big Pac 12 or BigTen leagues first.

Dave needs to assess on what he's got coming in and how to utilize them in the future.

Took the words out of my mouth. Kalei very steady as always. Magill, too. Nikki cannot and I repeat CANNOT carry the load for this team. Others need to step up. And Dave, PULL TAI EARLIER when she's struggling! Leaving her in to see if she'll come out of a funk won't cut it! I wouldn't even "PULL TAI EARLIER" because, I don't think she should start. Pulling her might actually put more pressure on her to perform so she doesn't get pulled. I think from the get go Shoji should make it clear to her that she's going in only to hit. Don't try to see if she'll "work things out". She's a senior, it should be worked out already. I think her role of a designated front row attacker is just fine. +1 yes manage expectations from the start of the match.....

kahakai has improved at libero, imo, over the first few matches of this season. not perfect, of course, but there are aspects of her game that have steadied out, like her passing. there's room for improvement for her defense and serving. and i'd like to see her play with a more aggressive, confident demeanor out there. she will only get better as she gets more comfortable in the role. Well, since Kahakai did well last year as a DS, but is struggling four matches into the season as the libero, perhaps she is better-suited as a role player and not starting libero? You know, like how you said Maeda was.

Granato being the exception (sorry, she's 5'11)...but it seems every recruit the past 3 years, aside from setter/DS/Lib, has been over 6'0 or taller. 6'0 Olevau 6'3 Taylor 6'3 Maglio 6'3 Huff 6'2 Greeley 6'5 Burns 6'3 Castillo 6'2 Sibley 6'1 Limp---something.
