Obviously SPRI 18 Mizuno and HP STL will be strong in the midwest this year. Any news on other midwest contenders like Adversity, D1, Uno and Ultimate? UNO was really a two man show last year, but their big OH left for Ultimate. So look for Ultimate to be improved from last years squad and UNO to be competitive but average. Look for Pipeline to be improved since they took the top players from NVC and moved them over there to have a combined roster. Look for Ultimate's Gold and Blue to be at the top of the Chicagoland 17's division since their 1's and 3's were in open and their 2's took 3rd in club as 16's. Also, word is that SPVB is only really focusing on their 18's teams and have taken the top juniors and moved them to their top 18's teams.

any impressions or surprises earlier today at asc especially with the 18s... Can't really get much out of yesterday. Pretty weak competition for the most part and a bunch of guys were taking the ACT.

SCVA Qualifying Day 1 Results: 18s www.scvavolleyball.org/home/180014933/180014933/Images/B18%20Qualifying%20Day%201%20Results.pdf16s www.scvavolleyball.org/home/180014933/180014933/Images/B16%20Qualifying%20Day%201%20Results.pdfNot many upsets that I saw. All of the top 18's held their ground. 17's was interesting, though. SMBC 17Adidas (5th in 16 Open last year - added Anthony Devantier, lost Chris Hall) beat 949 16s (winner of 15 open last year). That was a big win for SMBC. Also, 949 17s beat Balboa Bay 17s in 2. When I first saw the 949 roster, I thought it was a solid team that would definietly qualify but not really contend. Now, I think they are going be a top 12 17 open team at least. They beat Balboa Bay 25-13, 25-19. AND balboa had all of their key players there (Pender, Olivier, Paxson, Lawrence, Bikdeli). Interesting to note that according to the voting for "Who is going to win 17 open?" on page 1 of this forum, Balboa has the most votes. I don't think that should be the case anymore. To me, it's a two way race between Spectrum and MB Surf for the 17 open crown. My dark horses are SMBC, Team Rockstar, NCVC, Borinquen and Pace.

How do some of the top SoCal teams from last years 16s differ from this years 17s? The only teams I recall being in the top 8 last year for 16s were Spectrum, Surf, Rockstar, San Clemente, HBC, SMBC, and sometimes SCVC. What were the big moves made within the last few months?

Hbc last year weren't that good Everyone from San Clemente basically went to 949.

How does the 2nd and 3rd day of the qualifying tournament work? Do the top 2 teams on the first day advance to a top round of pools for day 2? Or is it the top team from each pool advance to pools with other teams that finished top in their pool? With 22 pools, I am wondering how this all works.

Most interesting pool in the 18s next weekend for SCVA will be the pool with Coast 18s, MB Surf 17s and 949 16s. It will be interesting to see what 949 can do against those two teams, and also whether MB Surf can compete with a top 18s team (with the adds of Colin Bailey and Garland Peed, I think Coast will be a very good 18 open team)

Baja is only fielding 15 and 17 teams this year.
If healthy, MB Surf 16 should be the dominant 15s and 16s team in the SCVA over the season.

Big drop off from them to the next tier of teams. HBC, Pali, Seaside, and Balboa all will compete to lose to MB Surf in the finals every weekend.

Southport isn't very good? They had to do something right to finish 10th at nationals. They are small but good players. Plus their hs season is in the Fall, Chicago is one of their first tournaments of the year, compared to many teams who have been playing a month or two.
When they faced HP in STL they won in 3 by the way. 15-25, 27-25, 15-13

I think Southport 16s should be included in this list especially in the midwest. They took 10th in Open this past summer placing higher than any team in the midwest including MVC, HPSTL, and Ultimate. They also beat Durham Attack Black Venom,LIVBC, and Roch Pace bootlegger at Nationals. Technically they were the best team in the Continental United States (excluding California). HPSTL 15's tied for 11th and handeled Southport when they played them in Chicago I think 25-17 both sets. Southport isnt very good I'm 99% sure that if you take 10th at nationals you actually are pretty good. Southport's 1st tournament wasn't until the new year and they had just started practicing a couple of weeks before that. Going along with what rettes said they did beat HPSTL in STL and at nationals Southport beat Durham and Pace, two teams that HPSTL lost to day 3. Also Southport was still missing one of their best players that season because of injury.

Though Southport may have finished 10th at BJNC they still are not even close to being the best team in the midwest, or even in the Badger Region. Southport failed to win one set in their five matches against MVC, their in-state rival.
