...any kind of feedback or reaction as to how day 2 of the scva qualifier turned out, especially with the 18s... My personal takeaways... Coast 18s middles are dangerously good Legacy 18s looks pretty good... They have Trevor Briggs at Libero and a 6'7 OH whom I have never seen before SCVC 18s was missing McGarry (broken foot) A lot of guys were out taking SAT so it's hard to tell how good teams really are OCVC 18s is solid... Took 949 18s to 3 and lost I believe but 949 played a lot of different guys, Presho wasn't there, and Kobrine was hurt I don't think I'm convinced on Mason Tufuga's abilities. His vert decreased over summer. The Brazilian kid on MB Surf 18s jumps out of the gym Greg Luck on SG Elite is right there with Noah Dyer... very fun to watch SMBC 18s has a new really good setter named Ryan Van Loo... gnarly blocker Tyler Alter is now an OH Bones 18s is not a contender. All they have is underclassmen, Good underclassmen but nothing crazy for 18s VCVC 18s looks good with Everett Schuett, Dale McLean, and the Newbury Park OH - probably 6'6 Rockstar 18s is weird because they have probably 3 really good guys and the rest are all 17s/18s who didn't make other clubs - - This guy Jack Lynch is an example... He could start on MB surf or SCVC. It wouldn't be a bad idea for Surf to pick him up if Rockstar doesn't qualify.

Baja is only fielding 15 and 17 teams this year. If healthy, MB Surf 16 should be the dominate 15s and 16s team in the SCVA over the season. Yeah no one in 15s/16s that can touch them. Big drop off from them to the next tier of teams. HBC, Pali, Seaside, and Balboa all will compete to lose to MB Surf in the finals every weekend. Hard to say that, I think 949 will be able to compete with them. They had a close game with MB Surf 17s, who, in my opinion, are a top team despite them being upset today due to the bench playing the second game. It'll be interesting seeing them compete in their own age group.

Rockstar held their ground, interesting to see how they would've done against a healthy SMBC 17s, but regardless they have a lot of weapons. Spectrum seemed to struggle early, it's hard to give a solid evaluation of them. People still wonder how they win so many games against top teams. Not 17s, but 949 showed some major skill against MB Surf. A lot of great plays and a really enjoyable match. Interesting to see how they'll compete with their age group. Same squad from last year too, and they all have gotten way better. Didn't get a solid look at Balboa 17s or 949 17s. I also heard The HBC 17s upset Rockstar 18s, so I'm curious as to how that matchup went.

I still see them as the front runner in 16s.

No, that wasn't a typo. Shawn Hughes, one of the top outsides in the class of 2016, is repeating 18s and will give this team the go-to hitter that they didn't have before. Leo Henken (on 16 Royal last year) is playing up this year and he's an absolute monster and will most likely be the starting opposite. George Huhmann (7'0) has the experience of playing with the Youth National team and should be even better than he was last year. This team is for real. And don't forget about Alex Gettinger on the outside either, he's really underrated. SPRI will also be good though, lead by Meyer, Bischoff and Kostakis. Im not sure if 1 or 2 players could make a bottom third team into a contender
First tournament from the 18s Midwest teams is in the books. High Performance took 1st place with wins over Ultimate 18 Gold (pool play & finals); Sports Performance 18 Mizuno (pool play & semifinals). They did this without George Huhmann who missed the entire weekend for a college visit. SPRI was missing Meyer on day 1 (college visit) and Bischoff for the entire tournament (injury). Top performing players at the event:
HP: Gettinger (OH), Hughes (OH), Lavanchy (L), Pappas (MB) Ultimate: Hanes (RS), Reardon (OH), Van Dyck (L) SPRI: Kotsakis (RS), Meyer (OH), Mitchem (MB)

The SPRI-18 Mizuno team went 1-5 on the weekend. The only team they beat was SPRI's 2nd team. HPSTL and Ultimate weren't particularly strong, it was more that SPRI was really bad.

Hard to tell how good either Spri, missing the best setter in the country, and HPSTL, missing the best middle in the country, are because those two are both game changers. You can't exactly quantify how much of an impact on the offense (and blocking, at 6'4) Bishoff has or how disruptive a 6'11 middle can be to opponents offenses and the offense of HPSTL, freeing up the 2 stud OH's they have. Basically i'm saying this wasn't a great measuring stick for the year, especially for Sports Performance. Many teams had injuries this tourney. I don't think this tournament should be looked at that much. Next week starts the Midwest Point series so that should be a good showing of the rest of the teams.

They have both beat 949 16 in close matches. Some highlights of mostly 949 16s with a few MB Surf 17 highlights of game 1. Both teams played better in game 2 of the match.

SCVA schedule is out for day 3. Great match-ups this weekend. Balboa 18-1 vs MB Surf 18-1, along with Spectrum 17-1 to see how they can do against top 18s teams. We'll see how Parks does against the top pins in 18s. 949 18-1 vs HBC 18-1 should be interesting. Eric Beatty is up against his old HBC team, but they've seemed to lost a lot of fire power on the pins. Rockstar 17-1 can probably compete against these teams as well, especially with Sam Lewis leading the charge at middle. Really interested to see how the pool with three 17s teams works out. Balboa 17-1, Baja 17-1, and MB Surf 17-1 are all in the same pool. I'm expecting Baja to finish the last out of the three, they don't seem very strong compared to previous years, although they do have some size in the middle. Should be a good match-up for Ian Parish. The HBC 17-1 at the 14 seed overall - anyone see them over the weekend? Have they added any players? They beat Rockstar 18-1, but I'm not sure how they were. SMBC 17-1 should do well with a full, healthy squad. They only had 6 players total this weekend but managed to keep their 15 seed. Hopefully they have a healthy team to compete against Bones 18-1.

Rockstar 17-1 lost to Bones 18-1 last weekend so there must be a typo in the schedule. Bones should be the 9 seed. 949 17-1 as the 10 seed should be competitive with all in that pool. Don't be surprised if they pull an upset.

It was an exciting match to watch. Mostly highlights of 949 16 but some highlights of MB Surf 17 too.
