If you're going to speak the "truth," expect some of us to say that you're being really silly. Heffernan just got there. He's a great pickup for WSU. Iowa is not going to be any better with Frederick at the wheel. I have confidence that Brian will do well at WSU and get the team back to being highly competitive. I also think, however, that Cindy is a much better coach that Rita was for Iowa and will make the Hawkeyes more competitive. They've already been more competitive this year than they have been for the past few years.

He is a great evaluator of talent and an even better trainer. Cindy is a great administrator and will generate excitement for Hawkeye volleyball, much like she did at WSU. I'm now a Pac-10 AND Big-10 fan... I knew you were just blowing off steam, JL...fyi, I'm back coaching hs and we're doing pretty well...our annual alumni match is this Friday and Adrian will be playing for the first time.

And Iowa with Cindy And her husband (Farokh) at the wheel......I hope you are not in the midwest .....because Iowa will make some noise (cover your ears)....oh wait i think they are much better shape than Rita already, with the SAME PLAYERS that Rita can't win with... Pac10FN........... G, don't be mistaking me for the Mt. St. Helen now, from the summer camps in pullman, they are not ready for Pac-10..... Good to hear that you are making a better life for the HS girls down there. Say hello to Adrian for me. See you in Vegas soon.

Cindy being long term experience and generally successful head coach in a strong Pac 10 conference would be hard pressed to do as bad or worse than Rita did a Iowa for her entire tenure as the Hawkeye head coach. Iowa has indeed done better this year than last year to this point, however, they haven't even reached the half way point in the conference schedule so there's a lot left to be told regarding how much they've improved this year. It also isn't exactly the same players as last year. Stacy Vitali is 2nd on the team in kills per game and she appears to be a redshirt freshman transfer from the University of Washington. Chelsey Garrett is a freshman that is their assist leader according to the team's overall stats.

Here's a "what-if" reply.
What if WSU hired Charlie Wade instead of Brian Heffernan?
Charlie could have brought a setter with him to WSU, in Thurlby. Hef has obviously had some difficulty finding talent on short notice.
Hawaii would not be undefeated without Charlie, but I guarantee WSU would not have lost to UNLV and most definitely not OREGON!
I just had a premonition of how vital Charlie was to the Hawaii program and remember him applying for that position. Thanks for being the best associate head coach in the biz.

You actually think she would transfer from Hawaii to a program that was in as much of a mess after Cindy left even IF Charlie had been hired as the head coach? Then you have to wonder if Dave would allow her to transfer to WSU to play for Charlie without making her sit a year. Its certainly nice of you to make meaningless guarantees though.

For those *true* WSU fans who were not able to attend the match at UW last Friday, this may serve as some reassurance (however small) of what you already know is true. Obviously the final score in all 3 games was pretty decisive, however, in the 3rd game Wazzu took the lead several times and wasn't behind by more than a couple points. It wasn't until 17-17 that UW was finally able to break away. I actually believed they might take the 3rd game and after the match, the players I talked to said they believed they had a shot also. Having talked to the players earlier in the season, this confidence and toughness is not an isolated event and is evidence to me that the team is progressing. I think most coaches agree that teams must *believe* they can win and perform well before they can actually do it. What wasn't accomplished mentally during last season, is starting to be achieved this year, which is credited as much to the players as the new coaching staff.

someone is being smart here ..take notice from all of you! Let's see.. Iowa has been swept in 5 of their last 7 matches since starting the conference season going 1-6 so far. Their home attendance is down from last year's average of 449 to 300 (~33% drop). Against top 10 teams at home they're 0-1 with an attendance of 341 (109 under last season's home average). Washington State has been swept in 4 of their last 6 matches since the start of the conference season going 0-6 so far. Their home attendance is down from last year's average of 910 to 756 (~15% drop). Against top 10 teams at home they're 0-1 with an attendance of 936 (26 above last season's home average). All of the extensive head coaching experience that you're trying to brag about for Cindy hasn't done her a lot of good at this point compared to a rookie head coach at Washington State.

How is Martin--it's Martin, right? Nicole?--doing? I noticed she set this match. First topic: Ruffda - I haven't seen Nicole set since the first game of the OSU match, but the team plays decidedly better with her touching the ball. I don't know how successful she has been since her rotator cuff tear. At the start of the year she was having trouble connecting with her quicks, though she set the slide pretty well (or maybe Jen Todd is just better at getting to that ball). Next season will be interesting with Gwen Davis eligible to play. I think Nicole may sit. Gwen has good height and a very strong leadership presence on the court. I think Nicole will attain that soon, but she's very young yet. Second Topic: Minnesota fans, thank you for being so supportive of Brian. The Superfans over here adore him and have the utmost confidence that he will find great success at WSU. In conversations with each of the players I have heard unanimous consent that this team is happier, more excited about playing and optimistic about the future than they were last year. Third Topic: IB, congrats on the Vandal victory in the Palouse battle! Next year we'll see you in Bohler.

WSU superfan please keep posting about the good, positive things going on up there at WSU. I enjoy your breadth of fresh air. When others paint nothing but a picture of gloom and doom you look to the future and see nothing but good things. WSU is lucky to have a supporter like you. As President George Bush says "Don't let the evil doer's get you down".

Next year will be interesting for the Vandals. It'll be fun to see who tries to fill Mandy Becker's setting shoes, and who will replace All-American candidate Sarah Meek in the middle.
