What was tremendous about this "match-up" was two competitors, Gordon and Gentil, challenging each other and both rising to the challenge. I do not think either athlete lost. Just one of their teams won!

I know it is easy to focus on Gordon's performance, but, keep in mind it was the play of the whole team that allowed Gordon to excel. The ball control by OSU on Serve Receive and Transition Defense was excellent (At least in those two games we were allowed to watch). Marissa typically was within 5 feet of the net when she contacted the ball to set. That kind of ball control makes life easier. There are teams in the PAC-10 (UCLA, Stanford, Cal) that would kill to have ball control that good!

And Gordon also had a lot to do with the ball control...

Yeah, OSU had good ball control but its not as it the Gophers have any threatening servers (at least since Busse) who would make them struggle on serve receive. Sure, Gentil has a nice litttle floater but that is the only one that might cause a problem.

Sure, Gentil has a nice litttle floater but that is the only one that might cause a problem. Reinhart's extremely short floater has given quite a bit of problems to teams. Just because a serve doesn't result in an ace doesn't mean it was ineffective.

How good are Minnesota at serving anyway? Last time I saw them, they had Busse and she had a very good one.

Minnesota's serving is generally strategic. Gentil's serve can be pretty tough, but no one's racking up a lot of aces.
Martin may have the best jumpserve, but she isn't serving this year.

That's too bad. I think I saw her do it a few times but it was a little inconsistent.

That's too bad. I think I saw her do it a few times but it was a little inconsistent. Well, it's a tradeoff. They'd rather have Peniata or Reinhart serve (and both are decent servers) and ALSO have their defense after the serve.

Now I really want to see Gordon again. Jeez, I bet Minnesota probably camped their best blockers out there and kept Gentil close to cut off angle shots. She is amazing.

Thanks that explains some things. However, I notice that serving is really hurting teams. Serve receive always hurts teams but not being able to pressure or serve in consistently is leading to a lot of upsets. It's more like the men's game now where the service game can mean the match. Well, it's a tradeoff. They'd rather have Peniata or Reinhart serve (and both are decent servers) and ALSO have their defense after the serve.

They have a mixed level of serving.
I think how the coach(es) call the serves depends somehwat on the opponent.
Last weekend against Michigan and Michigan State I thought overall they served very well.
They do get some aces, however, they're not an overpowering heavily ace oriented type of team.
They seem to more use their serves to force opposing teams to be more predictable on what they can do offensively.
Since they trust their defense so much I don't think they worry much about trying to overpower teams with their serves.

This was a pretty good match. Much better, from Minnesota's perspective, than I thought it would be.
Gordon did kill them, but she went from .560-something after 2 games to .368 for the match, so things did get better. Unfortunately for the Gophers, she got hot again at the end of game 4, and the Buckeyes pulled away.
Can't wait for the rematch.
