I just can't see PSU in the top 8, I see no one in their roster who can replace what Russell and Goddell did for them late in the past season.

Pfieffer was fun to watch, but they won't be able to beat 3 MPSF teams in 3 matches. The MIVA is wide open this year, and I don't see them getting a 2nd bid. PSU will be PSU and grab the auto bid from the EIVA. But they won't have to, so it would seem they still have a chance.

Pfieffer will be the 6, so they'd have to run through a minimum of two MPSF teams, and probably all 3 if they got on a hot run. Last year, with the MIVA being so dominant, was an anomaly. Things will be back to normal this season. Now if Loyola had Jaeschke, this is a whole different conversation.

Loyola will not be dominate with the loss of Caldwell and Jaeschke. Nobody on their roster is anywhere near those guys in skill or experience. Plus the majority of MPSF teams are finally realizing how the at-large process and RPI works, and scheduling more out of conference matches. How did your preseason NCAA bids work last year?

Not too badly...I did have 3 MPSF but I thought the MIVA runner up would be in the mix for that last at large bid.
As far as teams, I had Loyola, BYU, Irvine, Penn State, Pepperdine, and the CC Champion.
So for this year, I'll go Ohio State, BYU, Penn State, UCLA, Pfieffer, and Irvine.

Hm... not sure I'm as high on BYU as some others. I'm waiting to see how much progress some players have made since last year and how well Ben Patch fits into the mix of players. I'm really interested to see how Loyola looks without Caldwell and Jaeschke this year. Can't wait for the AVCA Showcase, as I'm looking forward to seeing George Mason (for the first time) and of course UC Irvine. My favorite team at last year's NCAA Championships was Pfieffer. They were fun to watch. I think they should take it all this year. Langlois, Patch and Sander all played on national teams over the summer. Patch has been back from his mission since January of this year, so he's had plenty of time to get into shape. From what I've seen at practice, he's picked up right where he left off. Sander has gained a ton of confidence in the off-season and imagine that he will soon get to where his older brother was. Langlois continues to improve, having only started to play volleyball his freshman year of college. With two experienced senior setters and upperclass middle blockers, I believe BYU has what it takes to dominate this year. Yes, they have a new coaching staff, and yes, they didn't exactly have a GREAT year last year - but Shawn Olmstead was the women's national coach of the year last year and he won two national championships at BYU as a player...I see nothing but championship rings in May. I may be a little biased though

You just keep squashing my hopes for a Pfeiffer national championship with your logical reasoning, and the season hasn't even begun. I still believe though. It's time for the underdogs to shine, unless of course they should end up facing BYU.

No Pepp, BYU, and CC champion is pretty vague. And Penn State is a guarantee unless you look at 1998. Haha. Not bad.

I felt pretty good at midseason. Then BYU imploded, Pepperdine's senior laden lineup hit some rough spots, and Hawaii got it going.
You can never tell...one or two bad stretches at the wrong time, and things shift quickly.

More than anything, I enjoy watching well-played volleyball, which we didn't get enough of last year. So tell me, in your estimation, has Jake Langlois improved as much from his sophomore to junior season as he did from his freshman to sophomore one?

Don't know if pfeiffer was at full strength or not but they weren't even the second best CC team there. And don't count out Mason in the EIVA. The new coach has turned the program upside down and their starters looked good. It will be interesting to see how Mason does in the first four matches of the season against UCLA, UCI, BYU and OSU. Penn State always seems to reload but they lost a ton of seniors last year and one of their main coaches. Mason could have a shot of breaking through this year. It will be fun to watch.

Olive at the Mason tournament? Saw on their roster they loaded up with foreigners. Mason should be a very dangerous team by the end of the season. EIVA Championship should be fun to watch for once! I don't remember the last time a championship game went 5.

Well, I'm not called byuinsider for nothing Completely agree on the well-played volleyball part. Last year was kind of a disaster. Langlois certainly hasn't improved as much from his sophomore to junior years as he did from a freshman to sophomore - but the improvement and experience on the national team definitely shows. Last year's improvement was insane for Langlois. Of course, it helps being 6-10.

I'd love to see Pfeiffer back in the tournament again, but if it's to be Coker, then I hope they are as much fun to watch as Pfeiffer. I wanted to see Pfeiffer play some of the other teams in the championships last year. They were obviously well-coached and well-prepared for their match with Loyola. I was very impressed. They played with more spirit than UC Irvine did against Loyola. Of course, Loyola played a nearly flawless match that day, so I'm not sure it would have mattered. Well, enough of last year. That is a tough opening schedule for George Mason. I'd love to see them win the EIVA, or anyone besides Penn State, for one year at least.
