Some less than stellar attendance numbers Friday night.
STANFORD (hosting WSU) 2,110 OREGON (hosting UCLA) 1,724 ASU (hosting Utah) 1,722 OSU (hosting USC) 1,437 UA (hosting Col.) 1,328 CAL (hosting UW) 861
861 at Cal? 6p start in the Bay Area on a Friday night has to be a traffic nightmare. Plus the game is on TV. But, still, 861? And it looked like 100 of those were UW fans, including Bailey Tanner's parents and dog!

Does the dog count?
I am flying home today, so I hope to help increase the numbers at the USC and UCLA matches next week.

Last year UW at Cal was at 8pm on a Friday night and drew 1,047. Two weeks ago Oregon at Cal on a Friday night at 8pm drew 1,057. The 6pm start and/or poor record likely accounts for the 150 dropoff, but that's not a big difference. Cal's largest home attendance last year was 1,759 the Friday after Thanksgiving against Stanford. It is a fair question why Cal doesn't draw more of a crowd in general but last night was not an anomaly.

In Sept. it took me 2.5 hours to drive to Haas from Palo Alto. I left @ 4 for 7pm start.

This isn't just a Cal issue.
It's the half-way point of a very exciting and interesting Pac-12 race, and all 12 teams played on Friday night. Yet, only one school, Stanford, managed to draw at least 2,000 fans.
The Pac-12 has a very serious volleyball attendance problem. The Pac-12 network doesn't seem to be helping matters, with so many games on TV and match times/days spread out from Wednesday through Sunday. I still maintain that playing volleyball on Sunday, head-to-head with the NFL juggernaut is is an attendance/marketing death wish.
A conference that some would argue is the strongest top-to-bottom or, at worst, is the second strongest volleyball conference in the country, should not be playing in front of a smattering of hardcore fans.

[...] A conference that some would argue is the strongest top-to-bottom or, at worst, is the second strongest volleyball conference in the country, should not be playing in front of a smattering of hardcore fans. You are welcome to this opinion, but there is no evidence to support that Pac-12 volleyball attendance is a "serious problem." Do you think Pac-12 WVB teams will become less competitive without more fans in the seats? I don't see a case for that position. I think you should look at relative rather than absolute numbers. I was amazed that Stanford drew over 2,000 for WSU last night. And last year's draw of almost 1,900 for WSU (also on a Friday night) seemed high to me compared to other years. I remember not long ago when the stands were pretty empty for WSU matches.

Fans are more likely to follow winning teams. For two of those teams, USC and UCLA, getting over 1,000 fans to attend is a challenge, on any night.
Washington is doing fairly well, drawing in the 2k's and 3k's, even without the draw of Vansant. From cheers at the intro of starters, the bigger draw for UW this year is Strickland. With six seniors graduating, however, it could be a challenge keeping the wins and the fans coming.

Recent home attendance is not consistent with your "getting over 1,000 fans is a challenge" description, certainly not for USC. USC: WSU (1,286), Wash (2,069), ASU (2,217), Ariz (1,742) UCLA: Wash (1,641), WSU (757), Ariz (834), ASU (1,385)

Mad dogs and, perhaps, Englishmen drive to Berkeley. Bart service is excellent, and there are buses from pretty much anywhere. Berkeley had a few years of glory there, with Angie Pessey, Hana Cutura, Tara Murrey, Carly Lloyd etc., and the attendance was higher for a few years, but most of them were more people who came to see a Cal team win than hardcore volleyball fans. The teams of recent years have not been a help with drawing marginal attendees.
