What the heck's with the cover? I thought Miazga's defense of the Tennant cover was lame and made me want to write him just so he'd have TWO letters criticizing it.
But this, and the Glass photos inside, is just pathetic.
Hey, Mike. If you're listening--I'm losing all respect for you and your magazine.
Anyhow. That's not the point of this thread. Instead, let's review their pre-season top 20:
1--USC 2--Nebraska 3--UCLA (what IS it with this program and the pre-season hype?) 4--Florida 5--Minnesota 6--Penn State 7--Stanford 8--California (making it THREE over-rated Pac10 teams) 9--Pepperdine (oops!) 10--Hawai'i 11--CSU 12--Georgia Tech (oops!) 13--Washington (and then they undervalue the Huskies!) 14--TAMU 15--UCSB 16--Arizona (4 over-rated Pac10 programs) 17--Louisville 18--Notre Dame (oops!) 19--UC Irvine 20--Long Beach State

I haven't seen it yet, but I sure hope they get the Men's season preview edition out in early January this year. Getting it in mid-season last year made them look way behind the 8ball.
While they're at it, perhaps they can update the front page of their website. The May '04 cover is still up there.

I too was stunned by the cover on Volleyball. And the interior photos were even worse. I am not a "prude" but gees I want to see "volleyball" pics, not modeling shots. It was a very touching article by Mike on Ms Brinkley, I wish her the very best....what a strong gal. Not sure why Volleyball is a month late with its feature on college womens volleyball. I would think they would be ahead of the AVCA with their predictions. It is like stale, stale news.

I received my magazine today. After I stopped laughing, it hit me. It is the April Fools edition. How else do you explain the cover and the top 20 selections? They will send out a real issue in a couple of weeks.
And Ruffda, you are right!! The PAC-10 teams, with the possible exception of USC and UW are over-rated. At least based on there performance so far.

I think you missed the notice that wasn't circulated by volleyball magazine that says you need to have paid for two subscriptions to receive one issue a month. Acutally, and I probably shouldn't be disclosing this, last time I subscribed, I received two issues a month for one paid subscription. Go figure.

Was one of those two issues each month addressed to "Idaho Boy"?

I stopped reading volleyball magazine a long time ago. Ocasionally I'd buy one for some of the interview advice on hitting and technique but I've been disapointed in them in recent years over their volleyball coverage. Let's hoep they turn it around. I've often wondered about whether fanzines could do a better job but since volleyball sites have trouble just surviving that might be difficult.

I don't blame them for sexing up their covers. We live in an age where Stuff and Maxim are flying off the shelves. I don't see volleyball magazine in stores anymore when I used to see it all the time. They are probably trying to get non-volleyball fans to at least pick up their magazine. If people would just watch some games, they would see some beautiful and handsome athletes that are awe-inspiring, powerful and graceful, all without taking off their clothes. Walsh and May played the indoor game for years, I don't remember SI refering to them as "sex symbols". It's frustrating.

I think Volleyball Mag was wrong for exploiting Kim in these photos. Yes, she is a beautiful young lady, and most definitely HAS to be pursuing a career in modeling. I hope her parents are prepared ti get ready for her to take her clothes off...this is what society wants to see in that profession. Look at Lauren Jackson in the WNBA...she is already showing off her stuff posing nude. Just watch America's Top Model (Tyra Banks' show), and focus on how degrading you have to become and the bull you have to take to be a model. Some of the things you have to do are so disrepectful to yourself. This is just my opinion. But as far as volleyball mag, these were very inappropriate pics for such a magazine. I may cancel my subscription if this is the direction that it is headed. But different strokes for different folks. This is America! BTW, don't foget to vote!

"Volleyball" is running far behind, college season started 5 weeks ago + we get some Kim Glass photos that have zip to do about VB. If they want to sell more mags become more timely and forget the fashion show.

Thank you! I am glad someone else besides me thought that the photos just didn't belong in this magazine. I mentioned it to my daughter (who is a college athlete) and she shrugged it off saying that they just want to sell magazines. My comment is that if I wanted to see those kind of photos then I would by 'other' magazines. I buy Volleyball Magazine to keep up with the sport of volleyball. I am tempted to cancel my subscription to make a point to whoever is making these marketing decisions but I'm not sure it would make an impact on them unless lots of people do it. Anyone interested in a boycott?

I think a letter to the editor would have more of an impact. Last issue, he made a huge point about how there was a lot of criticism of the Tennant cover on the Internet, but that he only received one letter of complaint.
By the way, the reason they gave for running the Tennant cover was because the "color" was so attractive. It had nothing to do with a 17-year-old in a bikini.
Wonder what the thought process was behind this one?
