Mark my words, Maglio will be a POY by her senior season. In confrence that is As much as I like the idea, I think it's difficult for a middle to win POY unless she has obscene numbers and can play all around, e.g., Angelica Ljungquist.

Re. Annie Mitchem.
I know she came in late to training camp and, as a result, was behind all the other players in learning the system and skills development. However, what I did see of her, I feel like she was somewhat lost and didn't have a lot of confidence on the court. It's to her credit that she was able to produce as much as she did despite all her hurdles, so that says something about her athleticism. But if you compare her actual abilities with what posters were saying about her before she donned the Hawaii jersey, it's night and day. I think she's all-conference level but I'm not sure she's All-American level. There has to be a dramatic upsurge in her skills. The only player who improved this dramatically that I've seen in recent memory is Emily Maglio. I'd also include Emily Hartong but she improved from year to year, not like Maglio who improved week by week, and sometimes, match by match.
I am hopeful regardless as I'm a fan of Mitchem. I just don't think she's the savior posters raved about prior to the 2015 season. With that said, I think the 2016 tandem of Maglio/Mitchem/Burns will be much greater than the 2015 tandem of Magill/Maglio/Mitchem.

IMHO what we've been missing and will be missing next year is a terminator on the left like a Hartong/Danielson type OH. It seems like over the years we've always had one (or even two Willoughby/Kahumoku). Greeley is good but she's more "steady Eddie" than terminator. Whoever becomes the OH2 (Granato/Castillo) will need to step up their game big time. RE: Sibley, people need to calm down. I've seen her video's and while she is good (and celebrates good!) she is not going to be the terminator on the left as a true freshman and she will not supplant Granato/Castillo there. We should be fine at middle with Maglio and Mitchem but both of them need to work on blocking the slide. That was our one blocking weakness this year. TH needs to continue to work on her connections with her middles. Still too many low sets to our middles. I hope Dave uses Kendra more often in the front row to block for TH. Minneapolis was hitting right over TH most of the night. We will be fine at Lib and DS with Kahakai and CMA. And nothing needs to be said about NT. She just needs to work on keeping her unforced errors down. Anyway, my 2 cents worth.....

Before the 2015 season, I wanted to see Maglio in action for an extended period of time. I got my wish and she didn't disappoint. For 2016, I want to see Castillo and Iosea.

The excitement I have on Sibley is not having her contribute right away next season, but the fact that she can develop into a pretty good player is what I'm looking forward to. Very athletic, TALL, can be very physical and she passes. I'm curious to see how well Granato will get better before season starts.

Looks like Dave will finally retire... NO CLUE who is going to replace him, but I actually think now would be a good time to handoff a top 10 team to the new coach..

Thought I should Start this thread. We lose two seniors, an OH who sturggled at times but had the heart of a lion and an ALL AMERICAN Middle, who will be hard to replace. In OH we have, Granato, Castillo, Greeley, Taylor, Sibley. Middles we have Maglio, Mitchem and Burns with Castillo as backup for injury Opp we have taylor and Castillo Liberos we have emma smith, Kahakai, Anderson, Ponce and Guinasso. setters we have Iosia, Higgins, Koelsch. IMO, the lineup SHOULD be OH1. Greeley Oh2. Granato MH; Mitchem and Maglio Opp. Taylor Setter- Iosia Libero- Kahakai But we all know higgins will set, but I think we are in a great season next year. According to cindy, Big name schools are coming, and 2 more pac 12 schools besides UCLA are. Hoping one of them is part of the stanford, Washington, USC trio. More so with Stanford so I can see their freshman play in person I don't see Greeley taking over as OH1...I don't think she is enough of a terminator to take on that role...I'm pretty certain she will be in the line-up as OH2 for her serve receive, defense and just all around steady game...I'm would love to either see Mitchem or Castillo possibly take the roll of OH1...Wouldn't mind seeing Granato take the role, but her height concerns me.

Just introducing myself around these parts, was a lurker for some time, here's a quick Hi and Hello to everyone here. Now that that's out of the way, really looking forward to next season for the Wahine, particularly the further development of Wahine's Natasha Burns and Annie Mitchem. I believe Burns and Mitchem could be special next year if they dedicate themselves early and often during the off-season, Natasha Burns brings PAC-12 like height to a team already full of trees, and Annie Mitchem's performance in the 1st UCI game opened many people's eyes to the athleticism and scrappy play (all while fighting through the pain of a fractured pinky finger in her right hand) she brings to maybe open up the conversation of trying her out at one of the OH positions. Really looking forward to how much these two girls develop this off-season, and what they'll bring to the team come next year, 2015 was an exciting year and here's hoping 2016 will be another one to remember, looking forward to it GO BOWS!!!
PS Really hoping Shoji sticks around please Coach please!!

The more I look at the loss of both Magill and Manu-Olevao, the more I am starting to wonder if Hawaii will be better or as good as this season's team. I truly feel that the position that needs to be filled the most, is Manu-Olevao's position. That's the position that I feel will be the catalyst in putting together a solid starting lineup.

I have to say I think Dave Shoji will stick around for one more year. This particular team is the best chance Hawaii has ever had to win an NT in recent years. Honestly, I think this year is the pinnacle of Dave Shojis recruiting and imi'ike pipeline. McKenna Granato will be an excellent replacement for Manu-Olevao and Annie Mitchem or Natasha Burns will able to replace Magil. Also, I think Dave knows what he has coming in with Iosia. She wins, hence her two Cal State titles. Obviously, that is high school, but the California State championship with after losing huge pieces of their team still means something.

From today's Star-Advertiser article ... prospects and scheduling for next year: Excerpt: "Taylor headlines the 2016 senior class that includes setter Tayler Higgins, defensive specialist Katiana Ponce and middle Annie Mitchem, the latter who fractured her right pinkie against UC Irvine on Oct. 17 and missed the rest of the season. It was just one of many injuries that sidelined several Wahine but not the winning. Taylor missed a start due to concussion protocol, sophomore hitter Kalei Greeley was out two starts with a knee problem and Higgins five starts with an ankle injury. Returning as juniors will be Greeley, setter Kendra Koelsch, middle Emily Maglio, libero Savanah Kahakai, and defensive specialists Clare-Marie Anderson and Gianna Guinasso. Maglio was first team all-conference and Greeley and Kahakai honorable mention. Back as sophomores will be hitters McKenna Granato and Casey Castillo. Redshirt freshman middle Natasha Burns will be joined by incoming freshmen Norene Iosia and hitter Kirsten Sibley. It will be a rare situation for Hawaii coach Dave Shoji as he will have three setters on scholarship for the first time. “We’ll let them battle it out,” he said. “There’s also the option to redshirt someone.” With five starters returning and eight others who saw substantial court time, Shoji was optimistic about 2016. He’s already looked at who would replace his departed seniors; Mitchem is the obvious choice to replace Magill and for Manu-Olevao, it could be Granato who showed a lot when pressed into playing for an injured Greeley on Saturday. “We have a good nucleus coming back,” said Shoji, named conference coach of the year for the 14th time in his 41-year career. ‘We’ll be good and we’ll try to get back to the regional again. It’s really hard to get where we got this year, every team is good at that point.” He expects that next year’s schedule would be challenging. With no contracts signed, Shoji declined to name the teams other than to say one Pac-12 team would be in each of the three preseason tournaments and that there will be teams from the other Power Five conferences." With all the height that Shoji has on the bench, I don't understand why Shoji can't just utilize his taller players? Does he have a contract with Punahou that he has to have at least one in the front line up? Even though I think Granato is good, why can't he use Castillo to replace Greely? 6'3 to 5'11 is a big difference!!! Then again we play against mainland kids! IMO, in order for the Wahine to beat these taller more athletic, mainland teams, your gonna have to have tall, athletic, mainland kids on your team, simple as that!!!
