Looks like Dave will finally retire... NO CLUE who is going to replace him, but I actually think now would be a good time to handoff a top 10 team to the new coach.. We're still waiting on that Irvine transfer.....

With all the height that Shoji has on the bench, I don't understand why Shoji can't just utilize his taller players? Does he have a contract with Punahou that he has to have at least one in the front line up? Even though I think Granato is good, why can't he use Castillo to replace Greely? 6'3 to 5'11 is a big difference!!! Then again we play against mainland kids! IMO, in order for the Wahine to beat these taller more athletic, mainland teams, your gonna have to have tall, athletic, mainland kids on your team, simple as that!!! Granato was picked over Castillo to come in for Greeley because Castillo needed to be the backup for both the OPP and MB positions. Burns is red-shirted and Mitchem wasn't cleared to play in a match. If one of Hawaii's MB went down, Castillo would have been put in. Same if Taylor went down too. So, in my opinion, Shoji made the right choice in putting in Granato for Greeley. And because Huff decided to quit the team to play solely basketball, Mitchem not being cleared to play in a match and Burns being red-shirted, Shoji didn't have a whole lot of options as he did at the beginning of the season. If Mitchem was cleared to play in a match, I am positive that it would had been Mitchem taking Greeley's place and not Granato.

With all the weapons we have, I would hate for all that to fall apart again

Granato was put in to steady out our serve receive. Haven't really seen Mitchem pass much this year so I doubt Dave would have put her in for Greeley....

Well, the last match that Mitchem played in, she had 0 serve receiving errors and tallied 13 digs. And I am sure if Mitchem was cleared to play in the last match of the season, she would be the one replacing Greeley. Granato would have replaced Manu-Olevao (if she was struggling) like Shoji had been doing all season long.

As I recall Granato was the first off the bench for either OH so we will have to agree to disagree.

If Castillo wins the other outside position, Hawaii's smallest front row player (after Higgins when she is in the front row) will be Greeley at 6'2.

The last match Mitchem played in was over 2 months ago. And she was filling in for Taylor. If Mitchem was almost exclusively taking reps at MB, I find that pretty gutsy for Shoji to put her in instead of inserting Castillo instead.

(my apologies, i was out of the country during that stretch, and never got around to watching the replays. and i only heard/read about the injuries and lineup changes.) and as far as the game situation is concerned ... i would say there's no comparison. it'd be far more gutsy inserting a player in the regional final and asking her to play a primary passing role for the first time all season ... than it is to put her at opposite for an injured player during a conference match in the middle of the season.

I know Carey set at 6'1, and all their hitters were like 6' 2.

But yeah, that 1999 team was in the 6-1 and 6-2 range with Veronica Lima, Jennifer Roberts, Heather Bown, Jennifer Carey, and Lily Kahumoku.

The 1999 roster was pretty big: Heather Bown MB 6-3 Veronica Lima MB 6-2 Tanja Nikolic MB 6-0 Jennifer Carey S 6-1 Margaret Vakasausau RS/S 5-8 Andrea Gomez-Tukuafu LS/S 5-8 Heidi Ilustre LS 5-10 Lily Kahumoku LS 6-2 Jessica Sudduth LS 6-2 Jennifer Roberts RS 6-2 This team lead the nation in blocks in 1999 Next year's Wahine frontcourt lineup is huge: Emily Maglio MB 6-3 Annie Mitchem MB 6-3 Natasha Burns MB 6-5 Tayler Higgins S 5-9 Kendra Koelsch S 6-1 Norene Iosia S 5-11 Kalei Greeley LS 6-2 McKenna Granato LS 6-0 Casey Castillo LS 6-3 Kirsten Sibley LS 6-2 Nikki Taylor RS 6-4 Next year Shoji will have the tallest team he has ever had. Sounding like a broken record here, lol.
