Didn't Hawaii have a huge lineup in 1999 Bown's final year. I know Carey set at 6'1, and all their hitters were like 6' 2. I thought Heidi Illustre at 5-10 was the other OH besides Lily Kahumoku. But yeah, that 1999 team was in the 6-1 and 6-2 range with Veronica Lima, Jennifer Roberts, Heather Bown, Jennifer Carey, and Lily Kahumoku. and 2000 for sure was a tall team. willoughby being the shortest, listed at a generous 6'0" ... although with her hops, probably reached higher than some/all of the true 6-footers on the roster.

Sudduth was 6' 2 I remember that team well, first time my bruins were the midgets in the match up with Selsor and Bowles at 5' 6 and 5'10 and Porter at barely 6'

Hawaii's best outside hitters since 2000, IMO:
1. Kim Willoughby 2. Kanani Danielson 3. Emily Hartong 4. Lily Kahumoku 5. Nikki Taylor 6. Jamie Houston 7. Sarah Mason 8. Aneli Cubi-Otineru 9. Jane Croson 10. Chanteal Satele 11. Stephanie Ferrell
(I'm probably forgetting somebody.)
I put Nikki below Lily Kahumoku because Nikki has a tendency to make unforced errors.

For me the greatest Wahine outside hitter I've seen is Teee! It was in 1989 when I started to go to the matches at Klum and had the pleasure of watching Tee sky and rip. Back then the fans would yell "Teeeeee" before her kills. Have you noticed someone yelling "Nikkiiiiiii" before hers?

The last match Mitchem played in was over 2 months ago. And she was filling in for Taylor. If Mitchem was almost exclusively taking reps at MB, I find that pretty gutsy for Shoji to put her in instead of inserting Castillo instead. fair enough ... but was mitchem being asked to be a primary passer in that lineup change? which is why i asked the question ... or was mitchem inserted just to play opposite (in place of taylor)? ... (my apologies, i was out of the country during that stretch, and never got around to watching the replays. and i only heard/read about the injuries and lineup changes.) and as far as the game situation is concerned ... i would say there's no comparison. it'd be far more gutsy inserting a player in the regional final and asking her to play a primary passing role for the first time all season ... than it is to put her at opposite for an injured player during a conference match in the middle of the season. Well, during that UC Irvine match, Mitchem was getting served to a lot and also making a lot of digs. The box score says she played 4 sets, but I don't remember her playing in set 4. Castillo took her place is what I remember. So, with that, Mitchem averaged about 4 dps that night. Which is incredible, considering she was doing this with an injured finger. An injury that required surgery in which the healing period kept her off the court for match times, basically for the rest of the season. Also, when Hawaii played UC Irvine, Hawaii was 7-0 in the BW. So there was a lot at stake during that match, since Hawaii had yet to clinch the BW title with that month long road trip still looming, with LBSU, CSUN and Cal-Poly on that road trip. And before Mitchem got injured, she was to be Taylor's backup (This was because Huff just quit the team) and also the MBs' backup, so I am sure she was practicing serve receive during practice time. And because this was 2 months prior to Hawaii's last match, I am not too sure that if she was inserted into the match to take Greeley's place, it would have been Mitchem's first time all season as being a primary passer.

Sarah Mason was truly underrated. IMO, she was All American Level There were times when she reminded me of Kahumoku. Which I loved. Another thing that I loved about Mason, was her serving.

One of my favorite OH’s was Alicia Arnott. She was part of the 2004 team (ranked No. 1 at one point) that went 30-0 before losing to Wisconsin in the 3rd round (the game where Ashley Watanabe did not play due to injury). Alicia was named 1st team All-WAC that year. The next year the Wahine brought in Jamie Houston and Sarah Mason, sending Alicia to the bench. She left the team shortly after.

Thought I'd throw this out there too. I am very intrigued with Mitchem. I kind of sense she's the type of player that takes a while to adjust but eventually becomes really good at it no matter what position it is. She's going to be in that starting lineup, regardless. Right?

And later finding out that Mason chose Oregon over Hawaii because Shoji didn't have a scollie left. Arnott took the last one. Arnott had a killer serve.

Mason and Houston to me were another form of Kahumoku and Willoughby dual. I wish next year's team produces at least one LS hitter of that caliber. Not being Taylor, either. I LOVE her on OPP.

If the Wahine can get a terminator on LS that can hammer the ball down they would have a chance to go all the way next year. They need a girl like the one from Nebraska. I think her name is Foecke? She's a beast!

I think "beast" is not very flattering for a girl.
