I don't know why Hawaii never chose a mythical creature as their mascot. Say, the chimera. Anyway, breaking news: Hawaii will win the Big West in 2016. The Menehune best fits for Hawai'i.

CAL POLY will upset Hawai'i at home.
With the loss of Magill & Olevao the Lady Stangs will bushwhack the Wahines at MOTT.
CAL POLY's freshmen class (5),...two seasons ago,...now juniors and a sophomore to-be will prove up to the challenge.
GoStangs!!!

Isn't this the same team Hawaii beat in 3 at Poly last season?lol Wasn't that game billed as one of Hawaii's potential losses during that 6 game road stretch. Magill is our only big loss....Hawaii and the girls will be ready...trust.

Magill would have been a big loss at MB if Hawaii didn't have Emily Maglio and Annie Mitchem. But they do. The middles will stronger than last year. As for Olevao, she isn't a big loss. She was wildly inconsistent. Others are chomping at the bit to play her spot. The team will be fine.

Nikki will be Nikki but I think people will be surprised that our middles will be strong and will be gunning for more sets. Our middles will surprise the non-Hawaii fans. Just watch. Non-Hawaii fans expect a drop off at Middle because Magill is gone. Though I believe Magill was an absolute asset for us....I think Maglio shines and Mitchem steps up her game and her powerful arm will get those balls down.

And, Emily Maglio is pretty damn awesome. Already an All-American in beach volleyball and All-Big West in indoor. She's going to explode.

Her transformation from her Frosh to sophomore year has been great....I am excited to see her this season because I see a break out year because she seems more comfortable and more confident than before.

My prediction: Kalei Greeley will come back with a bionic arm and become the Go-To LH.

I just hope Hawaii's passing and serving will be at least a tad better than last season. What I am thinking (Hoping too), it's not going to be worse. Manu-Olevao's passing and serving, if anything, was average at best. Magill probably served perhaps a handful of times her whole career at UH and probably passed just as much as well.
Manu-Olevao's team spirit may not be replaced, but her all around game can be, in my opinion. But to be able to replace Magill, however, would be for the MBs to be able to run the slide successfully. I also hope Mitchem will not be subbed out, but allowed to play backrow and allowed to take swings from back there, too. If all these things can come together, this team may very well be better than last season's team. Despite losing basically 1/3 of their offense.

jake. You are true fan, and I like that. I was really rooting for Poly lastseason, and they had a fantastic turnaround season. Poly returns two great pin hitters, and a fantastic setter, so I definitely see them as one of top teams in the conference. Best of luck this season! I think the 'green' schools will be really good in 2016!

I think Hawaii's middles will be an upgrade. AS everyone mentioned, Maglio is looking to breakout nationally, and Magill although hard to replace, is replaceable and I think Mitchem adds more diversity to that position as she is able to go behind the setter. As mentioned, I hope Dave looks to keep Mitchem in the backrow to pass - as she was 6-rotation player (I think) at Irvine Community College - but also to hit. Didn't Mitchem hit from the backrow when she replaced Taylor (when she had that concussion)? My only concern is finding a terminating left side attack. If Hawaii can just have one terminating left side attacker, then I think they could go far in the tournament.
OH - 5'11 Granato: Shortest of the bunch Good passer, did pretty good against Minnesota in regional final; 6'3 Castillo - question mark; 6'2 Sibley - seems to be a 6-rotation player, but is she ready for the next level; 6'2 Greeley - great passer, if her shoulder heals; she's the OH1.
Here's what I'd like to see: OH 1: 6'4 Taylor OH 2: 6'2 Greeley MB 1: 6'2 Maglio MB 2: 6'2 Mitchem OPP: 6'1 Koelsch (Move her to OPP as Hawaii has 2 good setters, unless Shoji and Iosia decide to redshirt) S: 5'9 Higgins...possibly replaced by 5'11 Iosia

And, it was Magill & Olevao doing most of the damage. Now,...they are gone. Yes, they return a lot of talent, but, banking on a more seasoned team CAL POLY. POLY will be undersized compared to the Wahines,...so,...ball control, solid serving and plenty of digs in the back court will be key. It's not going to be easy, but, very feasible. GoStangs!!!!

Now,...they are gone. I wouldn't include Manu-Olevao doing most of the damage when Hawaii played Cal Poly last season. If one were to pick 2 players on the Hawaii team that did most of the damage in both matches, it was Taylor and Magill. In fact, Manu-Olevao played pretty decent in the match here in Hawaii. But the match at Cal Poly, she struggled in trying to put the ball down for kills. Manu-Olevao, for the most part, has either been the third best player per match for Hawaii or lower. The way I would describe her as an OH, is basically an average player. One that had many ups and downs, night and day type of matches.
