No. 4 Hawai`i Sweeps Through Boise State to Run WAC Win Streak to 81
Recap Date: 10/08/04 HONOLULU - The No. 4 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (13-0, 3-0 WAC) stayed unbeaten, defeating the Boise State Broncos (14-4, 3-2) 30-20, 30-25 and 30-26 in front crowd of 7,385 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kanoe Kamana`o had another great all-around performance with 36 assists, seven digs and five blocks. Victoria Prince led a balanced UH attack, putting away 11 kills and two aces on a .421 hitting percentage. Susie Boogaard and Tara Hittle added 10 kills apiece while Alicia Arnott had seven kills, all in the second game. Teisa Fotu led the way in the back row with 13 digs. The Broncos kept it tight at the start of the first game, holding the Rainbow Wahine to a slight 8-7 edge until UH answered with a 4-0 run, sparked by two Boogaard kills, pushing it to 12-7 to force an early Boise State timeout. Hawai`i continued their solid play out of the break, getting their lead up to 16-8 on an ace by Hittle. Kamana`o then put it away, picking up her fourth block of the game, second block solo, to give the Rainbow Wahine the 30-20 game one victory.
Boise State opened game two with a 10-6 advantage. Hawai`i was able to pull within a point at 10-9 before the Broncos went on a 5-2 run, making it 15-11 at the media timeout. The Rainbow Wahine got back into it little-by-little, as an overpass kill by Prince gave them their first lead at 24-23. In all, Boogaard served six-straight UH points to put Hawai`i up 26-23 before they took the second game 30-25.
Hawai`i kept it rolling in the third game, jumping out to a 15-9 lead at the media timeout. They got it up to 20-12 before taking game three, 30-26 on a block by Juliana Sanders and Caroline Blood.
The Rainbow Wahine will next face UTEP on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawaii really tinkered their lineup tonight. Hittle played OH in game 3, Prince at OPP. Eckmier, as much as I lover her dedication is very ineffective.

Shoji emptied the bench for this one. He played everybody except Ong and even played softball player Caroline Blood! He tried Eck and Sanders for m1 and m2 in game 3 and used Prince at opposite with Fotu rotating into the back row after serves. Hittle tweaked her leg in the second game chasing after a runaway set so it's something to watch for. She seemed okay but they rested her for a little while after she initially walked it off. She kept the level up through most of the match.

Did anyone else see Kari Gregorys face when the announcer called out Victoria Princes name after Kari got the kill? It was very funny.

my observation,
Tesa is a much more effective libero. Beautiful passing, solid digging and her ability to serve floaters made her more effective. Some of her digs were flawless.
The middles need work. Juliana is not good. She can hit quick but not very accurate, Gregory can block but the sets are way to low for her. Melody can do everything ok. Kind of to slow for this offense, seems to be a bit timid out on court.
Kano'e's sets need to be slightly higher even if she is trying to set a quicker offense.
Arnott cannot. She isn't very good defensively. Not anticipating much, letting balls drop in front, to the side and behind her. Her hitting is erratic. The sets she got were mixed but as the left side hitter Arnott has to try and tool blocks, beach-slop it, rainbow it, whatever it takes. She seems to one dimensional at times. However she has a cool no-look down the line shot.
Boogard should use her short floater serve more often, her jump serve has a mean top spin, but not as effective as most teams practice receiving jumpers.
Ashley, she was ok. Sometimes out of line and a step to slow to dig. But I think Tesa is much more effective. Longer reach, plus she has a lot more game sense, very confident. Like those park rats that are so court savvy.
This is not to say that na wahine are bad as a team, by far the ooposite. As a team unit, they are very good.
If Dave wants a more steady line up, then I'd try this Boogard & Hittle Left side. Gregory/Sanders, Prince Middles, Right side Arnott, Kano'e setting, and Tesa libero.

I actually thought Melody did ok. She touched alot of balls coming over the net, including Flanders. No other middle got much of a touch on her hits. Melody wasn't very effective with her hits, but she read the hitters better than Sanders who often seems totally confused on defense. She also created a great decoy on a couple of occasions, giving the other hitters an advantage. Gregory had little success on offense or defense. Someone needs to step forward and "own" that spot soon.
Congrats to Blood for her match point stuff block.

Not the greatest match in the world, but a win is a win. The biggest problem with this match is that people got moved around all over the place. Stats for this are deceiving because players moved positions and no reserve got into a good rythem for the night. Arnott did a pretty decent job. She didn't get a lot of swings but she did put the ball down when she needed to. Boogard was also a bit inconsistent in her hitting but did a good job with her serves and overall play. Hittle did a nice job but I think teams are wise to her. They know she can be a threat to so Boise State didn't under estimate her. When she moved to the left, she didn't hit as well, partly due to her ankle. Prince did a really good job over all. Her job in the middle is safe.
That second middle position is going to be a headache. Each middle brings something different and its hard to figure out which one is the most consistent. Kamanao does have to set a bit higher for her middles and also help the left side to split the block.
I think Shoji should keep Watanabe in the line up for now. She has made some spectacular digs in the previous matches. Her passing was decent last night, but it has been better. But having them compete for the spot will only make them better.

It's nice that someone who has been so important to this year's success is getting playing time and recognition. Fotu has been a cog and gem in relieving positions, providing great passing and solid digging, very good hitting and a hard nosed attitude. Even when she makes mistakes, she keeps on plugging and is ready for the next play. That said, I don't agree with HawaiiVB's above comment. Do I think she's earned the right to get a start at Libero? Yes. Do I think she's head and shoulders over Ashley? No. This is my opinion but I think Ashley is better on serve receive than Fotu, particularly near the right sideline. Fotu is definitely a head up on Ashley is attack transition in my opinion. She is more adept at getting dinks and deflections without having to adjust through out the match like Watanabe does. She gets under almost every attack and sends it high into the air(Ashley can put it soft but she also can send ding passes that send people scurrying to the floor). I think that Fotu should get a start against a team and show that she can hold that position. I think she can because strangely, Fotu does better the more she is relied upon. Her strength and weakness is mental. Her skills are there. Problem is, Shoji might just be content subbing her into the backrow with the added addition that not only will she supplement Watanabe on defense but she can also attack. It's his call but he might want to at least try it for a match. We already saw a little of this when Fotu played Libero and watanabe subbed into the backrow.

If Ashley reads this I don't mean to upset her. Its nothing personal, I like her as a person.
I was referring to her versus ability or as I put it the quality of a dig. When Tesa digs a hard hit ball, her movement is one of a player in total control, her pace, her reaction, very smooth almost unconcious.
When I have seen Ashley dig a hard hit ball, its rushed, its anxious, its not as reactionary, but more less control. That's how I compare them. One is more mature than the other.
When I coach, thats what I look for first in a libero, the more confidence and control they show me, the more confidence I have in them getting to the ball and making a good play.

Did Nicki Thomas and Jessica Keefe play? Or are they redshirting this year? Nicki and Jessica did not play. It was Shoji's stated plan earlier in the season to try to redshirt both of them. I'm kind of looking forward to seeing Jessica play next season. She's been looking pretty good in warmups, even with her knee brace. Adding Nicki to the mix next year with Sanders, Prince and Gregory should mean that the middle stays pretty strong next yer.
