If the Wahine make the Final Four, I'd put my money on Dave Shoji. NO ONE thought they would be anywhere near a shot at the Final Four. Has any other team lost 6 starters (including the libero), among them two three-time AA's (one being National POY), another AA in Duggins ... and gotten to the Final Four the following year? Now that is some coaching! and a whole lotta luck! Good point....If both Haw anh Wash make it, it will be a close call....Shoji has done a great job.

Gee whillikers, at least he should get the most-improved-coach-of-the-year award for playing so many players this year that he could have but chose not to play last year. (Jus jokin)

Right now, my vote would go to Mira Topic from Texas. I love, love, love her game. She's got great stats, she has every shot in the book, she does it all and for her sake, I'm glad Texas is doing well cause she's finally getting national recognition that she has deserved. Gordon will probably get it and she will certainly deserve it, but I love Topic's game. Stat wise, I'm not so sure Topic is (or will be) the leading candidate from the Big 12. I just looked at Pavan & Topic's stats for conference matches played so far and here's what they look like: - League ranking in ( ) Kill's per game: Topic (1) 6.00 Pavan (3) 4.76 Hitting percentage: Pavan (4) .364 Topic .299 Digs per game: Topic 3.13 Pavan 1.62 Blocks per game: Pavan (T2) 1.71 (Tied with Stalls behind Elmer) Topic 0.65 I don't know that you can say there is much of an advantage (from these statistics) for either player. Pavan looks to be a better blocker and Topic better in the back court. I'm a little concerned that Topic's early season high hitting percentage (against some weaker teams) has dropped now below .300 in Big 12 play. If that continues the rest of the year, I see that as a problem for her case. While Pavan has a potentially killer serve as apparent yesterday with 4 aces in Nebraska's match with Creighton, she's really had a problem this year with service errors where she is high for the team at nearly one per game. As jus4me28 mentioned, no matter how well Pavan ends up this year, I don't think she will be a serious contender for national POY because she is a freshman. But she may have a chance at the Big 12 POY.

. . . and ought to win national FOY hands up. I think you mean "hands down". I think Hawaii's Tara Hittle, if she continues to improve at the tremendous rate she has been improving, could also be considered, especially if Hawaii remains undefeated late into the regular season and goes far in the post-season.

In terms of individual awards, I don't think Hawaii will be considered. There is no one individual that will stand out when compared to the national scene. Kamana'o will be a repeat AA. I don't think you'll see too many more candidates this year. In terms of Hittle, there are MANY freshman out there that are making an impact and getting more press about it. Stevens (Ohio St), Moriarity/Holloway (Texas), Morrison (Washington), Pavan (Nebraska), Florian (USC), Pressey (Cal), Hampton (Florida), and many more ....

if hawaii makes it the Final Four kamanao has to be considered for POy If Hawai`i makes the final four, a lot more has to be considered than Kanoe being POY. Tara being freshman of the year if she keeps up her playing and Dave as coach of the year. But that is still a long shot. Because with Hawai`i's inconsistent play thus far this year they can lose to anyone on any given night, but that's the same as anyone in the country as proved so far this year with all the upsets.

By the same token, I don't see Kamana'o winning that award this year either. Just based on the fact that I think there are better setters right now at established programs (Tortorello, Thompson, Moriarity, Main), I don't see it going to Kamana'o. I don't see Hawaii with a real candidate. I have to disagree with this part. Kanoe is the reigning AVCA freshman of the year. People questioned her ability last season because she got to set Kim Willoughby and Lily Kahumoku all year. This year she is leading a group of entirely new starters to an undefeated season so far. Her numbers are right up there with that of Tortorello and Thompson and better than Moriarity's. I don't think Kamana'o will win the POY award. Gordon seems to be the frontrunner at this point in the season. I wouldn't label Tortorello, Thompson, and Moriarity as better setters than Kamana'o either.

I don't see Hittle making freshman of the year. She is good but like just4me28 has posted, there are too many good freshman. Players like Crimes, Pavan, Florian, and all have put up better numbers than she has. Don't get me wrong. I think Hittle is a great player with a great future as a Wahine. But I don't see her getting that award. Kamanao doesn't "feel" like a POY. But if Hawaii makes it to the Final Four, she is probably going to be the leading candidate from Hawaii. I think Gordon is the leading candidate for now, but we shall see how things go in the rest of the season. Coach of the year will likely come down to McLaughlin of Washington, Elliot of Texas, and Shoji of Hawaii. The 2 factors will be how far they get in the NCAA tournament and if they can stay undefeated. I think Mclaughlin is the front runner for now.

. . . we shall see how things go in the rest of the season. For Mid-season POY, I agree with those posters who have named Gordon. She's played outstandingly this first half of the season. As Roy said (as have others), "we shall see how things to in the rest of the season." I think that whoever is still playing in the regional finals, not to mention the final 4, will go a long way towards determining the final 2004 POY, FOY and COY honorees.

Coach of the year Dave? Why? Last year he had the A team. What happened? I can think of several years when he had A teams and didn't win the big one. This year he surprises us with a team that is 14 - 0 and now we think he should be COY. Maybe if the season ended today. But, it doesn't and we have to see how much this young team improves. I think they can hang a banner with KK at the helm before she grads. Time will tell.
