Coach of the year Dave? Why? Last year he had the A team. What happened? I can think of several years when he had A teams and didn't win the big one. This year he surprises us with a team that is 14 - 0 and now we think he should be COY. Maybe if the season ended today. But, it doesn't and we have to see how much this young team improves. I think they can hang a banner with KK at the helm before she grads. Time will tell. COY is usually determined by how well a team does with what they have returned from the year before. Its when a team exceeds expectations. Hawaii losing 90% of their offense while remaining undefeated and knocking off several ranked teams to a #3 ranking puts him in contention. Likewise, Washington returned a decent amount of players but being #1 and undefeated puts McLaughlin in contention. And Elliot from Texas didn't even make the NCAA tournament from last year and now has a top 10 team. That gives him some consideration. You could even consider Stone of Ohio State as a candidate. You probably wont consider Haley a candidate as he returned 2 or 3 All American's from last years team and USC about where everyone expected them to be this year. Likewise, I wouldn't have given COY to Shoji, Wise, or Haley last year, as they all performed as expected. At the beginning of that season, everyone put those 3 schools in the Final Four and that is exactly where they ended up.

I don't see Hittle making freshman of the year. She is good but like just4me28 has posted, there are too many good freshman. Players like Crimes, Pavan, Florian, and all have put up better numbers than she has. Don't get me wrong. I think Hittle is a great player with a great future as a Wahine. But I don't see her getting that award. I also don't think Hittle will win the AVCA FOY award but she is right up there as one of the best Freshman in the Country. Hittle wasn't as highly touted as some of the other Freshman (Like Pavan, Hampton, Florian etc) but she has done an incredible job for the Wahine thus far. Her numbers will only get better as Hawai'i has already completed the tuff portion of their season. Just for comparison...... Hittle 3.08 Kpg, .304%, .44 bpg, 1.88 dpg Stevens 2.57 KPg, .206%, .31 bpg, 2.78 dpg Morrison 4.02 Kpg, .276%, .98 bpg, 2.29 dpg Pavan 4.71 Kpg, .328%, 1.22 bpg, 1.69 dpg Florian 2.30 Kpg, .295%, .55 bpg, 1.85 dpg Hampton 3.35 Kpg, 2.37%, .30 bpg, 2.67 dpg Pressy 3.89 Kpg, .184%, .59bpg, 2.57 dpg Crimes 3.75 kpg, .408%, 1.56 bpg, .20 dpg

I wouldn't put Pressey in the mix, if only because her hitting efficiency at this point is well below what one might expect from a FOY candidate at the left side. I said the same thing about Kristin Richards last year and got skewered for it. BTW - are there any setters in contention for FOY? Last year was a very good one for freshman setters.

He said it himself that the team didn't need much coaching. I remember him saying something along the lines of "you can't coach what Kim and Lily do". That was last year ... We're now talking about THIS year, and he should definitely be mentioned when discussing COY honors for this year.

I'm sure Crimes is a good player but consider the competition Beachman. It's not like she is putting up impressive numbers against the likes of UCLA, CAL, Arizona, Santa Clara etc. ;D

I Don't like Ohio State, What happens if Gordon Tears her acl. I had a dream she tore it and got hurt playing .. I like Gordon. She is a tough competitor, and an awesome player. I remember when UH laid the smacketh down on Ohio State back in 2002. Gordon had this pissed off look on her face like she really wanted to win. I like her spirit. I hope she continues to do well, AND stay injury free.

Also I would say Kamana'o might get wac player of the year.. Could she be the frontrunner, now that the preseason WAC POY, Fenton, has quit? I guess she could be one of the frontrunners. R. Pazo is playing pretty well for Rice. And there's Salavea of Nevada to consider. Anyone else?

I'm a little concerned that Topic's early season high hitting percentage (against some weaker teams) has dropped now below .300 in Big 12 play. If that continues the rest of the year, I see that as a problem for her case. You must not have seen the Kansas St game. I think topic hit around .538 for that match. Also she is Big 12 pow for the second week in a row and third week for the season. It seems though that people that vote on these things might be more concerned with points per game as opposed to hitting percentage, just my opinion though.

Unless the rest of her teammates get it together, she won't receive the recognition that she may well deserve. I agree totally with your comment! In order to get that type of award the team has to be a contender and at least make it to the regionals. That is a near impossible order for LBS this year, unless some things really change!
