I was just thinking about the effect that transfer students have had on some of the more prominent programs.
Prince at Hawaii has definitely made a serious impact on the success of this team. Without her, they are a VERY different team.
Main and Mapp at Ohio State. I like the way Main plays the game and wonder if we ever would've heard of her had she not made the change. Mapp is quick and effective and definitely a part of the Ohio State surprise.
Merriweather at UCLA has made a difference in the middle for USC.
Dillon at USC .... Who knows what the setting would be like for the Trojans had she not made the switch.
Carlsen at San Diego ... She definitely gives them more punch (although the team itself has been pretty up and down this year)
Just wondering how many other success stories there are out there ....

Yeah Main rocks and was very highly touted out of Assumption HS in L'ville, KY. But everyone was surprised when she choose a smaller school so that she could play RS running a 6-2 rather than a big school with just setting. She was putting up some good numbers her freshman year at Xavier with several triple-doubles.

I know it's not current, but who can forget Heather Bown. She made Hawaii into an elite team just by herself. I really think that UCSB would have made it to the final four if Bown had chosen to say there.

Amy Morris (from Penn State) is making a significant contribution to Tennessees success.

Can anyone tell me the reasons some of these elite athletes transfer. Is it playing time, coach problems, location? Is this usually right after freshman year or is it later in their career ?

Different sport, same idea. Dennis Johnson played at Harbor College for a couple of years and was a so-so player. He then transferred to Pepperdine and absolutely blossomed. He went on to a stellar NBA career and was a three time champion with Seattle and Boston. Sometimes people get into situations not of their making and a change of environment means everything in the world. It is not one particular thing, it is the entire scene they must flee from.

It can be a number of reason. Players transfer due to coaching problems, decide that they want to play closer to their family, finding that they don't like the school they chose. Usually a player will transfer after their freshman or sophomore year. This gives them time to adjust to the new coach and team and gives them at least 2 years of eligibility. You occassionally see a junior transfer and play for another team in their last year but that isn't very often.

Has this happened to Hawaii, where a stellar athlete left for another school? The only one that I can recall is Adrienne Bradley (not sure if that is her name). For Adrienne I don't know if she was "stellar" because she did not play too much here, but I think she did well at Utah. Jen Saleamua I don't really consider a transfer since she did not play a game here. Other people who left, i.e. Sarah Chase, Kelli Cordray, Kee Williams (?), I don't remember them playing for a different school.

However - she had so many leg problems that she never really made an impact after she transferred. uhathletics.hawaii.edu/WVball/stevens.html

Also, Brie Hagerty from Ohio State to Washington (last year), is a huge contributor.

Also, Brie Hagerty from Ohio State to Washington (last year), is a huge contributor. Didn't realize she was a transfer .. wow, the planets have aligned for Washington huh? .. a good outside hitter transfers in, and a freshman shows she can handle the fast offense, Tomasevic finds consistency .. then in comes Morrison who exceeds everyones expectation and BOOM .. they are a SOLID team! Goes to show that anything can happen!
