I'm guessing that top 10 will be: 10. Texas 9. Wisconsin 8. Minnesota 7. UCLA 6. Florida State 5. Kentucky 4. Florida 3. Wisconsin 2. Texas 1. Texas So Lexi Sun is the unanimous pick as the #1 recruit for 2017 unless everyone is talking about Butler. That would make the last 3 number 1 recruits as OHs (Hodson, Lanier). It's just a guess! The voters could all surprise us just like when they chose Webster in 2010 and McCage in 2012.

Texas So Lexi Sun is the unanimous pick as the #1 recruit for 2017 unless everyone is talking about Butler. That would make the last 3 number 1 recruits as OHs (Hodson, Lanier). Lexi Sun has had by far the most hype of any player in the class since she was picked by Karch for his U23 team a few years ago. I actually just saw her play tonight in a high school match--she's immensely talented as a hitter but her passing was straight up dreadful. She was aced 5-6 times in a 3 set match and had a few other shanks. Her forearms just aren't very "meaty" like you'll see with a lot of top passers. When she was able to move her feet and get under the ball, she did pass quite well, but I was surprised with how much she struggled in a high school game. Hitting wise, the team mixed it up most of the night and the sets were consistently low for Sun. In game 2 her team was down 20-24, and they just rode Sun to victory. Her intensity really picked up after playing relatively lackadaisically until that point. Her shot selection and ability to tool the block are very advanced for her age, and will be the biggest reason why she's going to be a top 2 senior ace. Her form/contact point are textbook, and she sees the court extremely well. I have little doubt that she'll be a 4 year starting hitter. If she can improve her passing over the next year or get pinched in serve receive, she'll be a backrow option. I didn't get to see a lot of swings out of the back, but I know she can murder a ball out of the pipe. The rest of her game looked really solid. Defense was good, blocking form and movement looked quite good, good hands for setting out of system, etc. Serving was nothing special, but was solid if nothing else. Passing was far and away her weak point, but she's a good one. If I were ranking players, I'd put Butler ahead of her due to her raw physicality and power. She has Alhassan/Hookeresque athleticism and will be a true monster in the middle at Texas. Sun might be more polished entering the college game, but I think Butler will be the better player by the time they are upperclassmen. Regardless, I could see these 2 leading Texas to multiple titles before their careers are done.

McCage ranks up there as one of the worst overall 1 picks...and Ruddins as one of worst overall 2 picks

Why all the hate for Rettke? I don't understand why there was every any doubt she'd be top 10. She's going to be a fantastic opposite for Wisconsin next year.

Does anyone have video of the Illinois recruit? Never seen her play.

I haven't seen much of Rettke this year. I have most recently seen some film of her playing OH for her HS team last fall, and middle in spring 2015. Her shot selection was solid, as was her footwork, but her lateral quickness left something to be desired. She had that loping look of someone who hasn't quite grown into her length. She also didn't have much in the way of hops, and likely hasn't really needed to develop it because could basically stand there with her hands in the air and block effectively, and she doesn't have to get up that high to hit over everyone else's block. What I am told is that she is much stronger at opposite, and has improved in general since the film I've seen which makes sense.
I'm really looking forward to having her as a Badger because she has made several moves over the past two years that demonstrate a commitment to growing her have, like asking her HS coach to move her to the pin and let her play 6 rotations so she could work on her passing and ball handling - something for which Sheffield has high expectations of all players, including middles. She's also enrolling early at Wisconsin to get a jump on her development, suggesting she wants to do what it takes to earn a staring spot.
The thing about the Senior Aces is that they're about potential impact in college, not club or HS. You can't teach height, and the way that Rettke grown her game indicates that there's room there. She's got a high ceiling. It's up to her whether she hits it. I'm confident (or at least hopeful) that she will.

Re Rettke, I think there are a couple of things going on here. One thing is that her path has been a little unusual. She isn't one of the 4-year stars at VB in club and prep that some of these other top 10 players are, so it comes as a surprise to badger fans that she has risen the ranks to the elite kind of off-the radar. I guess that path is not so surprising as she was a convert from BB to VB and took a while to adapt initially, from what I've heard.
Also, at this age, players progress so rapidly, especially if they have changed sports, it's easy when depending on hearsay to mix the old news with the new. There was a lot of talk going around initially that she is a little slow laterally, but I don't know if that opinion is somewhat out of date. Then there is also how you evaluate her as a RS as opposed to a MB - she was originally projected as a MB, but more and more I hear that she might have even more impact on the right. I have also heard that she recently has been a dominant force whenever she is on the court. So it would appear she has improved substantially of late.
How much has this panel of coaches seen her? Well, I think they probably have seen her a fair bit if they put her in the top ten. Don't think they would do that lightly. It would appear she has made the kind of enormous strides one can only hope for from someone with her gait. So I'm going to trust their opinion a lot more than my jumble of rather uninformed, and possibly disinformed ones.

Have Hart, who is rising to such a high level, play middle with Tionna and keep Haggerty and Gilly on the left, let Loberg, maybe Whalen, get a spot starting her sophomore year. I'm curious to see how Whalen fits in. She is a solid player, but I think she peaked before other kids in her class. She will still be a great addition to the team. So much talent for the Badgers.

She started on Illinois Elite's 17U National team as a 15 yr. old. She ran the floor and handled the ball better than most guards & dominated the paint despite giving up a lot of bulk to her opponents. Was named a tourney all-star.
If you know the layout of the RecPlex, there is a running track above the courts where all the college coaches can watch the action form above. For all 3 of her games it seemed like 100 coaches were hanging over her court scribbling notes. She projected as a top recruit in hoops before deciding vball was going to be her thing after her sophomore year.
