I think Kerri is a genuinely friendly person, but I think she also works to cultivate her public persona. All the stuff with NBC was symbiotic.
Edit: let me add that I think Kerri's "stardom" has generally been good for BVB. (Though I thought NBC overdid in 2012.) But I was disappointed by her skipping MBO the year they used old school rules, and I thought the Chicago boycott was a mistake.
Probably irrelevant, but Kerri and April also seem to share similar conservative political viewpoints.

Let's hope they both play with fire & grace as long as possible. Together , they are still the best team in the world on any given night. At Long Beach fans flocked to be near both of them.
What we're seeing is more parity in the sport and its rise in Europe and Asia. Great for the sport. Add in NCAA & high school and there will be more opportunity for everyone to rise with the tide.
Personally as a fan I hope April "pops one out" and finds heavenly motivation to rejoin the team. Then let the rest of USA try and knock at their door.

Not Kerri and April but Anouk Vergé-Dépré announced this morning that she is leaving Forrer and partnering with Joana Heidrich

This is Kerri's work, she is doing the things that is making her the highest paid US player male or female. These players do have to hustle for their dollars, I don't blame her for understanding what the sponsors what to see. Same was said of Phil Mickelson on the PGA. Great players are sometimes close to unbearable, MJ, Kobe come to mind. But they do it because they won't settle for anything but championships.
I've always been a Misty fan over Kerri, just like other players vs. Casey. But I don't hold anything against these players who turn it on when the camera is on them. I just don't root for them.
I'm really interested in the young players (27 and under) in what they will do. There is a big wave of younger talent. Geena Summer Betsi Kelley L. Kelly R. Irene Caitlin Amanda D. Bree Jace Brittany T. Katie Spieler

Not Kerri and April but Anouk Vergé-Dépré announced this morning that she is leaving Forrer and partnering with Joana Heidrich Wow! This could be a very very interesting partnership, perhaps the tallest combined on tour now that Kerri/April have split. Anouk Vergé-Dépré is 6'1 and Joana Heidrich 6'3 - both prior full time blockers. My guess is that Vergé-Dépré is moving to full time defender - if she can make this transition and both continue to evolve and mature, this team is going to make some serious noise. Both are 24 yrs young - big if on the switch to defense for Vergé-Dépré though. Perhaps they are going to switch block ala Pedro/Evandro which would also be an interesting twist. They are both super athletic for their size...big international news that will likely get buried on this thread - thanks for sharing, Buck. Away from their volleyball skill - this is definitely the hottest team ever assembled...

If April and/or Kerri are unhappy with their current partnership, this is the perfect way for them to break up with a positive spin. Was up in Toronto last weekend. They didn't look all that unhappy together to me. Were together a lot. A lotta hugging, laughing, etc...They told a friend & I that they were bummed about the semi final match but was extremely happy with the bronze. They said that they would love to keep playing together, but time would tell. Depended on different factors. Do I think they'll play together again? No, but not because they don't want too, just because I can't see Kerri devoting another 4 years to an Olympic dream if she doesn't feel she can at least medal. It takes to good players to make a team and who knows who she will end up with. Why would you trust anything they said after "We're extremely happy with the bronze."

Just a quick point to all the Kerri bashers - why so much criticism? I mean in the grand scheme of things - Kerri has been an incredible ambassador for this sport - she gets my wife interested in beach volleyball which is a huge accomplishment. Her impact top down sideways on the sport and the younger generations of girls aspiring to play volleyball is overwhelmingly positive. She has made a few mistakes and she may have some personality traits that don't completely line up with your ideals but it is a little tiresome that she gets so much heat. I know that this is what this board is for etc. and I criticize players on this board as well - I just think we are obsessing over a few paint strokes and not taking a step back to appreciate the overall painting sometimes. I agree Chicago was a mistake and she has had a few other missteps along the way but the bar being applied here is very high. She is best woman to ever play beach volleyball and she is American (there should be some pride in that)- she has some personality quirks but those same traits have led to her greatness. Has she earned any allowance? Just saying...

I agree she is the best woman ever to play - and I think its not even close.
However Kerri is out for Kerri, nothing wrong with that, but the idea that she has done a ton for US volleyball doesn't hold up. She has frequently skipped US events throughout her career, has publicly embarrassed the AVP on multiple occasions, etc.
Her public personality, obnoxious though it may be, is defensible as necessary for her mainstream appeal. I dont like it, but I dont blame her for that. However her other actions make her objectionable in my eyes so I think the criticism is reasonable.

They liked April Ross, thought she was a great player. But they wanted to see Kerri. They did not care about any controversies, any skipped tourneys, they want to play like Kerri Walsh, they want to play beach. Right now, the two players my daughter looks up to the most are Kerri and Carlini. That will change as players fade from the spotlight and others pick it up but at this point in time, these two players are inspiring her to love the game and find out what she can do with it

There is little doubt that Kerri has had a tremendous impact on the sport. Kerri is the Goldman Sachs of beach volleyball: It's impossible to deny her accomplishments and her impact on the sport, but it's equally fair to criticize her tactics and philosophy. Because of her longevity and succcess, she's in a position to have an out-sized impact, but what's good for Kerri is not necessarily what's in the best interest of the sport.

That is all fair and trust me - I am not saying she should be immune. Its just that the scale of microscope sometimes seems a little off in grand scheme was my point. Having said that, the interesting thing about beach volleyball is that the vball stars are so accessible such that many on this board know her personally so there is that angle - all I have been exposed to is her public persona (not knowing her personally) so that is also very fair.
