What are y'all's opinions on who will be the top 5 picks out of the class? Miguel Sarabia, Cole Pender, Kevin Kobrine, Jerod Nelson, Brandon Browning I think it’s really hard to say Pender and Browning. They showed a lot of promise last year, but this year they are on talented teams that continue to lose. Pender looks like a shadow of his old self and we’ve seen that Browning really doesn’t have the athletic ability to make things happen on his own. Also I don’t know why Kobrine keeps being put in people top five. He doesn’t go to 949 practices and frankly doesn’t care about volleyball and it translates to his game, definitely not the best opposite in the country.

I would definitely take Jonny Bowles or Luke Denton over Kobrine. If he's gonna play volleyball at UCLA, why is he prioritizing basketball?

I really don't know for sure but my guess is - It is his senior year - last chance to play basketball - he has forever to play volleyball. But you might be right about Jonny

Bowles has a whip of an arm and is a good blocker. Wonder how he will translate to College where the game is faster and the blockers are better. He has the speed and the hops

It is not unusual for high level players at Newport Harbor or Corona del Mar to play basketball for their high school.
In the past couple years there have been a number of guys who have earned medals at BJNC who play for their high school basketball team: Stanford's Kevin Rakestraw (earned at least on gold for Balboa at bjnc) played basketball for Newport Harbor.
Ryan Moss (USC) - started on the basketball team and volleyball team that played in CIF Section finals the same year. (Silver in 17s, bronze in 18s at BJNC)
Kevin Fults (UCSB) - also started on the basketball team and volleyball teams that played in CIF Section finals the same year. (Silver in 17s, bronze in 18s at BJNC)
Sam Kobrine (UCLA) - also started on the basketball team and volleyball teams that played in CIF Section finals the same year. (earned a gold in 16s and bronze in 17s at bjnc)
Matt Ctvrtlik (Harvard current setter) earned a gold in 18s for Balboa in 2016 at BJNC and a bronze in 18s at the 2015 BJNC was a very good basketball player for Corona del Mar. He was first team all league his senior year and earned a bunch of other accolades. Another member of the CdM basketball team who played for a CIF Section title.
------------------------------------
Once the basketball season is over there are actually three current basketball players from these two schools who will improve their club teams when they put more focus on volleyball.
Tyler Flood (CdM) - earned a silver at BJNC last year in 18s is on the MB Surf 18s team this year. Dayne Chalmers (Newport Harbor) - all tournament selection at the 2016 BJNC is on the Balboa 18s Kevin Kobrine (CdM) - 949 18s.

On the other thread of the Winter Volleyball Championships write-up, it mentions that Ryan Whealen, setter of HPSTL 18 Royal, is going to NYU. Is that confirmed?

At this point in the season, I would peg the top 5 recruits in the class as Miguel Sarabia, Jonny Bowles, Parker Mikesch, Brandon Browning, and Jerod Nelsen.

Kevin Kobrine is not even the best opposite on his own team.
