Not much working for San Diego through the first 2 1/2 sets. Kennedy was off. To my untrained eye, I’d say Gegenbacher’s setting was off tonight. Wibilin and Fuller were quiet. USD never established anything consistent outside - Pepperdine’s block was very good. USD really had to scratch for the second set - a lot of slides, pretty good in the middle, and outdigging Pepperdine, barely. Frohling was pretty excellent. She’s a gamer with a nasty serve that USD had a difficult time handling. In fact USD struggled with return much of the night. The only time they really have a hammer is when Kennedy is really really on, which I think is about 50/50. They’ve proved that they can scratch together wins when they get down, but a better team wouldn’t get in those positions in the first place.

Santa Clara outlasts SMC to take the third set 46-44. I guess the seniors want their money’s worth in their final match. What’s the record for a high score in a set?

Google searching shows an 88 point set was a D 1 record and 90 points in D III. So it looks like Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara tied the NCAA record and broke the Div I record with their 90-point third set tonight. Anyone know differently?

I hope getting this much competition in a final conference match provides a spark for USD to work on some things this week and bring their A game to the tournament for a long run. Ditto for BYU, though they relatively cruised through their final match today. And...CRAZY, CRAZY match between Santa Clara and SMC tonight!!! 46-44 possibly record-setting third set and Santa Clara is up 2-1.

Saint Mary’s came from down 15-20 to take the fourth set 26-24 over Santa Clara. Going to a fifth set. Maybe they are aiming to set a scoring record for a full NCAA match. Anyone know what that is in the rally scoring era? Set scores so far are 25-22, 22-25, 46-44, 24-26. Total is 234 points heading into the fifth set.

Wow. I would have liked to have seen that, even if it were only to follow it on gametracker.

Wow. I would have liked to have seen that, even if it were only to follow it on gametracker. The video stream links on the previous page work the day after the match and stay live for a few days, if you ever want to go back and watch a match you missed. You have to forward 10-15 minutes to get to the start of the match.

Saint Mary’s came back to take the fifth set 15-11 and finish their season with 2 wins, though still in 9th place in the conference.
Total points scored in this match were 260!

Broncos - Gaels third set score breaks an NCAA record, per Santa Clara twitter feed.
Congrats to the Gaels for finishing strong, after a disappointing season where they were ALMOST able to win so many matches, but kept coming up short.
The four seniors in tonight's match: Hernandez and Wilkerson for Saint Mary's, and Mead and Cunningham for Santa Clara, have something epic to remember their final match by.
Sienna Young was the kill leader for SMC with 21 kills, hitting .415. Sarah Chase added 18 kills...nice to see her back in the front row after two injury-plagued seasons. Hughes and Knudsen each had 14 kills. Senior libero Madi Wilkerson had a match-high 22 digs, Mary Hernandez had 28 assists, 12 digs in her final match. SMC hit .286 and SCU hit .236. For Santa Clara, Michelle Gajdka had 23 kills, hitting .327, Allison Kantor had 20 kills, and senior MB Jensen Cunningham had 15 kills, along with 6 blocks. Senior setter Kirsten Mead finished with 60 assists, 5 kills (.714), 13 digs, 2 aces, 4 blocks.
*I believe both teams broke the previous NCAA 5-set match points total, also. Previous record was 127. SMC scored 132 points in this match and Santa Clara scored 128.

Minnesota best Georgia Tech in the 2004 regional semis and they had a game that went 48-46. That was the 30 point era, but thought I’d mention it.

Minnesota best Georgia Tech in the 2004 regional semis and they had a game that went 48-46. That was the 30 point era, but thought I’d mention it. It's a goofy thing about volleyball statistics. You have to clarify side-out era, rally scoring era, and 25-point rally scoring era. The tweets above specify 25-point rally scoring era. I am super impressed by anyone in the 25-point rally scoring era who breaks an all-time record, because they are handicapped by having the chance to score 15-20 points less per match. Pepperdine Soph. MB Jasmine Gross did that this year with breaking Pepperdine's all-time season blocking record, but it's very rare. 2017 Final Standings for the WCC: Schools CONF W-L CONF PCT W-L PCT T-1 BYU 17-1 .944 28-2 .933 San Diego 17-1 .944 24-4 .857 3 Pacific 11-7 .611 16-13 .552 T-4 Loyola Marymount 9-9 .500 16-13 .552 Gonzaga 9-9 .500 14-16 .467 T-6 Santa Clara 8-10 .444 15-15 .500 Pepperdine 8-10 .444 16-15 .516 8 Portland 6-12 .333 15-15 .500 9 Saint Mary's 5-13 .278 9-19 .321 10 San Francisco 0-18 .000 3-28 .097 Congrats to San Diego for earning the AQ bid, and best wishes to both San Diego and BYU to represent the WCC with a long tournament run.
