It looks like Pacific's season is not over yet... They could potentially make some noise in this tournament... www.womensnivc.com/news/officials-announce-15-schools-receiving-automatic-berths-into-2017-nivcOfficials Announce 15 Schools Receiving Automatic Berths into 2017 NIVC 11/21/2017 Officials for the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship announced 15 schools that have received and accepted automatic berths into the postseason event. The complete 32-team field will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 26 around 10 p.m. ET following NCAA Tournament selections. “After a nearly 22-year hiatus, we are excited to announce the first 15 schools that have received and accepted an automatic berth into the 2017 event,” said NIVC director Sean Hardy. “We are still waiting on a few other AQ’s from several conferences, but we are excited to see the 32-team field getting closer and closer to reality.” Conference School America East Albany American SMU Big Sky Sacramento State Colonial College of Charleston C-USA North Texas MAC Bowling Green MEAC Maryland Eastern Shore Mountain West Wyoming Northeast Bryant Ohio Valley SIUE Southland Stephen F. Austin Summit Oral Roberts Sun Belt Texas State SWAC Alabama A&M West Coast Pacific The 2017 tournament will consist of 32 teams with participating schools hosting all matches. A team is offered an automatic berth by the NIVC when it’s the highest-finishing team in its conference regular-season standings, and is not selected for the NCAA Tournament. Should a conference’s automatic qualifier team decline the NIVC invitation, then the conference forfeits its AQ spot and that berth goes into the at-large pool. Eight participating schools will each host four schools in Rounds 1 and 2 slated for Nov. 28-30. Round 3 will take place Dec. 1-3, Semifinals (Dec. 4-9), and Championship on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. ET, to be streamed live on ESPN3. Well I’ve been questioning the SEC all year and now the WCC is perfectly lined up to validate my skepticism.

What do you all think of BYU and San Diego's bracket matchups?
BYU got to host, which is a big advantage for them at altitude and at their cozy Smith Fieldhouse. They face American in the first round...not a cupcake, but a team they should handily beat. Then presumably they face a hot/cold Oregon team in the second round. If they can get past the Ducks, they will be pitted against the much maligned #4 seed Kentucky team, which has some big time hitters to challenge them..OH Leah Edmond has amazing stats similar to Jones-Perry, high flying MB Kaz Brown, Skinner, and the excellent setting of Lilley.
(Of course, they have to hope that Oregon shows up in the second round as the error-prone team they have been recently, not as a well-oiled machine of incredible athletic talent, which they can be especially with Stone and Agost.)
San Diego didn't get a seed, but they start out against another much-maligned team in LSU, which just squeaked into the tourney. Assuming the Toreros take care of business against LSU, they will meet up with USC in the second round at Galen Center. USC is another team that can run hot/cold, and I like San Diego's superior setting and multiple offensive options against them. I am hoping the Toreros can pull off the upset of USC. If they can do that, they will probably face a very good #7 Minnesota team, but I think they can be competitive there, as well.
Let's go Cougars and Toreros!

San Diego will give USC all it can handle if they meet and I would think they would have more fans than Southern Cal at galen.

I like the choice of Gengenbacher for player of the year. She really makes that team click. If she is on, they are very good.
I did not expect Kennedy Redding to be honored as co-freshman of the year, but she actually had a pretty good season, so why not.
As far as the tournament goes, I think this is a great opportunity for San Diego. If they play the way they did against BYU in their 2nd H2H, they will be difficult to beat. They really have a nicely balanced offense when Gengenbacher is setting well and keeping the defense guessing. I've seen them play some junk ball too, so I'm just hoping they are at their best at the right time.
Same goes for BYU. I have no idea if they are peaking at the right time. They haven't looked great to me recently, but neither have they looked bad. They've been working hard to get the opposite more involved in their offense, and I like what I saw in the last three or four matches, as they've spread the ball around a bit more, but I wonder if it's too little too late.

I agree that the opposite is still a pretty big weakness, compared to most seeded teams. I've seen Lacy have some nice games, and then also some games where she disappears and Stetler comes in to give it a go. Unfortunately, though Haddock is hitting .203 for the year, she is very small for an Opp, and Stetler, who is also small, is hitting only .131. When they play teams with a big block and a diverse offense, it may end up being a liability. They need to make sure their block is solid and that both OH's and middles are attacking well... Jones-Perry is almost always on (4.72 kills/set hitting .280), and Miller has been more consistent recently (3.12 kills/set hitting .257). The middles get a combined 3 kills/set, so BYU needs to pass well to feed them more.

Also, worth mentioning that some of the All-WCC players are excellent students as well. Gengenbacher was among 3 WCC volleyball players selected as CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 honorees. (3 others were selected from the PAC-12 and one from NAU.)

I only saw one match from this conference, and it was San Diego's win at BYU. Gengenbacher was amazing in that match, All-American caliber IMHO, and even the BYU commentator was raving on and on about her. Lake as defender of the year is probably a no-brainer as well. BYU and San Diego are both quality teams and have a good shot IMO at upsetting higher-seeded (or just seeded, in SD's case) teams.

Big congrats to Gengenbacher. She sets against the grain to the RS better than any setter I've seen this year and is outstanding at putting her hitters in one on one situations. She's one of the top 3-4 setters in the country IMO. I hope the AVCA recognizes her play this year too.
USD is a team that has outstanding middles and RS but their leftsides struggle terminating, so if they match up with USC in round 2 they'll need those 2 to step up and convert when given good opportunities.
