Yikes. Well, on one hand, this ensures the AVP goes on with only a few holdouts. But on the other hand, this is really not good situation. As NHL fans out there well know, simply pushing aside Athlete/Management problems without actually solving anything is not good in the long term at all. That creates even more issues that will cause even more headaches later on. This time sure, most people took "my way". Next time, they might just say forget it and take "high way".
I'm really surprised that, assuming the quote is accurate, Donald Sun went full on ultimatum. Cancel the entire tour for a year? I forgot who said it earlier, and I truly apologize for that, but someone on the forums had mentioned that the real problems the AVP had is if Sun decided to just pack it all up and go home. Which seems he was more than ready and willing to do here. I mean, that's boggling. How many chances can the AVP get before all sponsors just totally and fully give up on the league? Or the sport? Wouldn't you want to try your hardest to find compromise? No idea what the situation looked like behind the scene, but a full on shutdown does not sound like compromise at all. This doesn't exactly shout "confidence" going forward at all.
Question: does anyone know whats going on with beach volleyball? Why is even the FIVB having so much issues itself, not even a year after the Olympics? Just what is going on?

Volleyjim...Does this mean none of the AVP players can compete in the WSOBV in July? What a bummer!!!

I disagree with Sarah Day...Donald Sun has no interest in growing this sport at all. The only top talent that will be able to compete in the WSOBV will be Kerri, Brooke & Summer. They are competing in a presidents cup format against other countries. Jeeezzz
Threatening to shut down a tour shows he does not care what the players want or need....Disappointing on so many levels!
Thank you Kerri & the very few others for standing up for what is right!!

The AVP has a execlusive contract now for 4 years. It's in part an NVL tournament. AVP players will be prohibited from this tourney, would this be correct Geddy or Volleyjim? That in part was Leonard's strategy in going in together with the NVL for that one tournament. He was trying to bring some big names over to NVLs side. Only brought one. Big loss for the NVL today I would say. The players let the fear of the ☀️ creep in!!!

Also, with due respect, lets face the facts of the matter: unless your winning consistently, your not earning an income on the AVP. Unless your winning big consistently, your not earning a livable income on the AVP. All this talk about growing the sport, yet the AVP still isn't really a pro league. And this is supposed to be the pinnacle of pro beach volleyball in the USA. Sure, prize money increases but for how long? Then what? If the info on BVBinfo was right, then it really seems that a whole lot of players didn't want to sigh, yet were forced to when confronted with the fact that Donald Sun was going to throw this whole season out. No matter how positive a spin they try and put on this, just seems overall very disappointing. A lot of work still to do yet. |

Why only those 3 can play at WSOBV? Because LA would not let the others play? What about the pair coming from USC? They should be able to compete? |

It's a free market... players can choose to play or not, simple as that. Those that aren't playing are welcome to play anywhere else. Seriously, they want more prize money? They have to have a product that reaches a demographic that companies want to be exposed to. Right now most of the men's players are brutally boring and the mini-court makes it tough for truly great defensive players to showcase their abilities and favors the big guy.
If the AVP is your main vocation than you should be dedicated to that... if you're dividing your time between AVP and FIVB than you probably should be paid to reflect that.

I signed, I have faith in Donald, I think that what we have now is much better now than it was five plus years ago,” Brunner said. “Seeing all the international stuff canceled shows that volleyball is in a tough place right now, just one year after the Olympics." I was honestly surprised. I knew that there has been alot of tournament cancellations on the FIVB tour this year. Ever since the FIVB started its 5 Star Program seems like a lot of the non 5 or 4 stars are getting shuttered. Is it a funding issue? But why now all of a sudden? |

Well, anyone going through the AVP demise in 2010 understands the tour’s fragile nature and a fan’s exuberance in any “regular tour” like we’ve experienced of late, limited, but regular. I have no idea bvballer on any of the details of this “4 year contract” or exclusivity. I guess if you can get exclusive contracts you should, and if you can’t, well, would YOU fund a tour, build stadiums, free admission (very arguably, the only model that works with beach) etc.? Saying Donald Sun doesn’t want to grow the game when he has kept growth in check to keep it operational (what is the “other theory” on such limited growth)? There is so much demand for a domestic beach tour, a 32 city tour would be a slam dunk? If it were you trying to grow the AVP and were faced with a potential “NVL level” field, which is not where you saw your brand or where you could market it in a “limited market game”, would you swallow your pride and give into that? Have always felt bad that domestic beach volleyball players cannot make more of a living that is currently possible, but the purses speak for themselves and it doesn’t appear anyone is filling their coffers with funds from these events. The WSOBV started as “not on the list”, to rumors of “3 star”, to an NVL/WSOBV merger with many AVP players crossing over, so not sure what one would do at this point to keep the AVP running. Glad we have Huntington after all and sad it’s in such turmoil and we “didn’t really see this coming”.

Ah okay: thanks for clearing that up geddy. I had read, not sure where now, but one of the teams on the FIVB saying that they didn't like how cancellations had affected their playing schedule for this season, but maybe they were talking about the venues you listed. Those were the two I knew about (didn't know Fiji was due to flood) and also Rome early in the year, think that was financing issues as well. |

I have doubts Claes and Hughes will sign with the AVP for 4 years once they finish with college in a few weeks. They are a HUGE factor in my eyes on growing the pro beach game in the U.S.. They need points and experience so will be focused on the FIVB more so for Tokyo 2020. To me they are the 2nd best team for the U.S. behind Walsh Jennings and Ross. It should be interesting for them and other high level college beach vballers graduating in the coming years but Hughes in a league by herself as far as having control and not being a pro yet, a lot of leverage I feel.
