If you simply look at the endorsement deals that the top players get, you quickly realize that volleyball (beach or otherwise) simply doesn't sell product in this country?
The tours will continue to be money losers due to their public-use-of-space venues that have constraints on for-profit use or alcohol sales. The AVP has never been profitable. It was only sustainable when it was on TV at a time when it was more of a novelty and aberration than something that can be returned to.
This is not an easy problem to solve. There is clearly a decline in mass media sports viewership that even the NFL and NASCAR are not immune to. Millennials aren't watching TV or going to events so I'm not sure who are the viewers 10 years from now. The recent layoffs at ESPN are all tied to this. Perhaps this is an opportunity for beach volleyball to figure out a way to capitalize on streaming, VR, or other media.
I believe Sun wants to grow the sport and has the resources and the autonomy to do so; however, I'm not sure he has the gumption.

The contract states that they must get written permission to play in other tournaments so potentially they could still play in Long Beach. If I were the AVP I would allow them to if I did not have a event the same weekend.

Huh. Well, Theo's a nice guy, but I'm not sure where he's going with this. I know of two events that have been cancelled - Lucerne, where the promoter went broke (and another guy picked it up, but not in time for this season), and Fiji due to massive flood damage to the venue. Ah okay: thanks for clearing that up geddy. I had read, not sure where now, but one of the teams on the FIVB saying that they didn't like how cancellations had affected their playing schedule for this season, but maybe they were talking about the venues you listed. Those were the two I knew about (didn't know Fiji was due to flood) and also Rome early in the year, think that was financing issues as well. I completely forgot my main point: There are cancellations and/or postponements pretty much every season. 2017 doesn't look remarkable or unusual in that respect. That's why I found it curious that Brunner would use it as a rationale to sign the AVP contract.

Not to go off topic, but doubt if Claes/Hughes is better than Ross/Sweat . . . IMHO . . .just wanted to "check" that statement that they are the #2 team...LOVE them, but so young and doubt they could get through Ross/Sweat "regularly"... NOW back to the demise...I would like to hear more of Leonard's positioning with NVL, if YOU were Donald Sun and that was going on, might you not want to either get support or walk away? I think I would . . .

Pretty comprehensive win for Donald here. Bvballer I was the one who said Donald's strongest card was the cancellation threat and he did what all good businessmen do when faced with leverage that wont last. He used it. If he had put this off for a year, who knows what position Armato would have been in. Now he basically owns US volleyball for four years, at least the men's side.
I didn't realize that the WSOBV was going to be the same as previous years, meaning only two US teams get in (and realistically only one for the US women since Kerri was getting in no matter what). No wonder it wasn't that persuasive an argument. I think Leonard and AL B now have to do whatever it takes to get Claes/Hughes on their tour or simply give up the idea.
Also, it would be nice if they could but why do players think those outside the top ten should be able to make a living playing BVB? Is there sufficient fan support for that? Have those players done anything to earn it? Do they bring value? Answer to all three questions is no.

I think I would . . . Claes/Hughes split with Summer last year, and Brooke was one half of one of the worst teams on the FIVB. Ross wasn't quite as good on the AVP, where Kelly/Sara lost once to Summer and otherwise only to Kerri/April, but close enough to not matter. However Brooke is old and injury prone and when they played top international teams they took a whipping. Plus Kelly/Sara are a year older and stronger. I'd be surprised if Summer/Brooke could keep up with the taller, faster, stronger pair for long, if they even can now

Brooke & Summer are done .
Brooke making a stand with KW and Summer crossing over to the light.
There is zero chance of Claes/Hughes skipping AvP 's for NVL's, imho.

We are all going to put our own spin on this topic but the bottom line is forcing a group of players to sign a contract that the majority were obviously not happy with is not good business. Smart business man? YES...Respectable business man? NO. Let's all talk in 4 years and see where the state of beach volleyball is in in the US. Even if KW retires, she can always untire in 2019 & make a run at qualifying.

Thats the way business works and moreso in sports. Management and labor are adversaries. When the NBA owners had leverage several years back, they forced the players to lower their share of revenue by 7% or so and they did it by exploiting their poor long term financial planning and basically starved them out. NFL owners do the same with their union all the time. Airlines do the same with their unions, as do many other large corporations and the threat of closing is often used. In general I dont think much of the practice, but its totally ordinary and from a financial perspective is not only good, but probably a best practice

Kerris absence won't hurt beach Volleyball for the die hard BVB fans. Where its gonna hurt is the casual fan that says oh Kerri is playing today, I'm gonna watch or Kerri is gonna be playing close by I'll go watch. As much as a KW fan I am, this was her choice. She decided to stand up for what she believed in and Neither her or Donald blinked. Do I think we've seen the last of KW on thevAVP? Probably. But who knows. I think Everyone comes out of this fine. Kerri & the AVP will be fine.

guest2: Ft. Lauderdale this year showed Summer/Brooke in a very good position, which I had predicted a few week before the tourney on VT. BUT, I hadn't heard Brooke stuck with KW position & Summer moved over . . . interesting...I think Summer is going to be a larger force soon PLUS she is a hand setter, but then I just like to argue about this stuff ;-)
