Someone said this at the beginning of the year, maybe Theo, and it was roundly poo-pooed, but it seems like there have been very few events and teams didn't really make that much this year (Canada finished lower than 3rd once I think and only got 80k) Is this just a weird year for scheduling or the beginning of a downward trend?

I would say yes, but that sh*t is kept pretty tight to the chest. FIVB asks a lot of the host, not sure every stop gets the return.

It's really a fair question. Players didn't care for the new star system, cause it is fewer events, and ergo less money. Then again, starting in February and not having another big event till months and months later was bond to throw people off too. I'm curious to see if this "promise" (well, more of a hopeful statement) about more FIVB/ USA Volleyball cooperation pans out, cause that could be something. But as of now, I would say overall trouble on the horizon. Don't think this season went as smoothly as the FIVB was hoping.

Based on Nick's passionate post match thank you to Hannes for saving the FIVB, I think it was in trouble this year.

Wow, could you imagine FIVB going under? Beach Volleyball would all be about dead Internationally which would undoubtedly affect domestic tours.

The prize money has been steadily declining as a whole over the last couple of years. I would say that the biggest problem with the FIVB tour is some of places they schedule tournaments. It's hard too imagine that tournaments in Morocco, Malaysia, Scotland, etc. are doing the FIVB any favors when it comes to profits and how much prize money they can hand out. I think we can all understand the FIVB wanting to spread the game and allow different nations to host. However, the FIVB is much better off spending their time, money, and resources putting events out in the US, Brazil or even Canada/Europe.

So indoor has leagues all over the world, then there is World Champ. and other world events.
Wouldn't it be better if players played in what ever league they wanted, and then competed at special events like indoor does?? Soccer/futball Tennis golf I'm sure the list goes on for sports that don't have just their federation run their whole tour.
Was this just FIVB trying to monopolize beach volleyball??
I could totally see 3-4 huge leagues jump up right away. Euro NATO S. America Asia

I will say, I think the AVP is in prime position for next year if the FIVB is in trouble.

I heard that the AVP has not profited a single year under Donald Sun so far. He has been keeping them in the black with his own money. Even with sell out tickets, the event is still too costly. If FIVB goes under, I think we will have a major loss in the sport...
