Yes, scarily thin. One would think Texas doesn't roll in to '18 that thin on the pin. Maybe there will be a transfer in but that may be hard as there is no guarantee that they would get to play much. And then there is the absurd Lexi transfer rumor which makes no sense Texas is so thin. There is literally no one behind her pushing for playing time. Only way it would make sense would be if she were homesick. The Sun tranfer rumors have nothing to do with playing time or being pushed for playing time. Its going to be an interesting offseason for a number of top programs and impacting players transferring both in and out.

You know damn well that wasn’t coaching. Nebraska was absolutely discombobulated and UT played phenomenal. How can you not agree that JE isn’t the best coach? The man can recruit hitters, but the execution isn’t always there. You can’t use one game as your reference. You have the look at the entire picture. bball wasn’t trying to make it a competitive thing between Texas and Nebraska. There’s no reason to get so defensive about that. Look at player development. Do you think Nwanebu got better at UT? How about McCoy? White so far? Sun over this first year? She was the top player in her class, and never got better. We won’t even get started on Shook. YBG? She has a good game and highlights, then is benched in the next. Samedy, Hilley, Lilley, Rettke...look at their development. It was amazing. Texas continues to get high recruits after high recruits, but no one gets better. You have 1 trophy to show for it. And a lot of disappointments. That was the point being made. To argue against that is just denial. Get back to me when Cook can win a national title outside the state of Nebraska. And, look at the head-to-head matchups between Cook and Elliott over the last 10 years. If Elliott isn't a good coach, and he's owned Cook, what does that say about Cook? Pretty sure Rettke and Hilley had a semester over Sun and Shook. I'm not sure about Lilley, who I believe is the better setter between the three top setters of their class, and Samedy, who didn't have to pass and had SSS as a setter and great tempo. I'm not trying to say that Texas is great develoopment but look at Micaya, there's promise in her. However, she had a little bit of a sophomore slump, partially because of setting.

If a quality pin comes up on the transfer market it is going to be very hard to get her to come to Texas because having White and Sun on the LS and YBG on the right does not bode well for playing time. What might be a plausible option is find an OH who is good that just graduated and has 1 year left and who would consider playing the back up role while getting a scholarship and working on her masters at a school like Texas.
If that is not available then this spring they need to really focus on working with Orie on training for pin play. If an OH needs a break or gets injured YBG could go to left and Orie to RS. I don't see Orie getting on the court as a MB so if she wants to stay this is her best option for court time.

Wow, some of you all are pretty tough on a couple of first-year players! You all were asking quite a bit (too much in my opinion) for putting all of this pressure on a couple of FRESHMAN to take you to the promised land! I could have told you last club season that Sun was not going to be the "end all be all" that you all were hoping for this year. She is certainly a talent and before it's all said and done she will be a very special player. Shook's big mistake this year was not coming in over the summer...but you can't blame her for honoring her commitment to her club team and players either. There is usually a big jump in comfort/ability from freshman year to sophomore year. Shook will only get better and Sun will be even more dominant next year. With Butler coming into the mix I think next year should have been the year you all were talking about NC's! Feel good about your team Texas fans...overall it was a very good year and even better things are ahead in the future.

I'm not concerned about depth on the pins....you have Sun/White/Yazzie, plus Butler can play on the left or right too if need be. I watched Butler in AAUs a few years ago and she was insanely good...looked like a Hooker/Alhassan caliber athlete. Just destroying the ball and skying over the block. Obviously it'll be a big transition to collegiate volleyball, but she was ranked ahead of Dana Rettke, Samedy, Hilley, and Lilley.
I do worry about Texas overloading the middle position. They have Butler, Johnson, O'Neal, Orie and Westerlund. 5 players for 2 spots. Not sure Orie or Westerlund are ever going to see meaningful playing time at Texas so I wouldn't be shocked if they look to continue their career elsewhere. But that still means one of Butler/Johnson/O'Neal is on the bench next season. I do think this season there may have been too much talent on the roster with 3 top 5 recruits riding the pine during stretches. More talent isn't always better.
The big issue though is first contact. Sun/White should be working on passing the entire offseason. I think they need to bring in 1-2 stud libero/DS transfers. They have the scholarship space and need a massive upgrade from Hahn/Roundsaville. McCoy did a good job this season and they'll need to replace her too. Haven't seen Zelon or Gabriel, but hopefully they'll be an improvement.

First time seeing Texas in person yesterday (at least this version of the team) and those hitting lines are impressive. Crank after crank. What I thought they lacked yesterday, aside from the passing woes, was a bona fide floor leader. Saw it from Chi at times, and YBG kind of gets there when she plays, but it was a very neither here nor there demeanor from everybody else. Texas folks, who do you project that to be next season? That is a great observation and I agree with you. I was hoping that Cat McCoy would be that person but things didn't materialize as such. I'm thinking Yazzie could be that person. There is something about her that resonates when she is on the court. That intangible fire that comes from certain players. As usual, the passing woes need to be addressed immediately. I feel that Elliot is holding the team back by not addressing it a little more. High power with average passing has become associated with Texas. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've been watching Texas volleyball for over a decade and it rears its ugly head more often than not.

I'll post this here too...
From a technical side of things... Lexi has yet to effectively learn how to swing around and through blocks. She was OTing girls less than a year ago.
This is magnified by the slower, higher Texas offense. The theory behind a slower offense is that it gives your superior athletes more time and vision to pound regardless of the block. If your athletes aren't good at that, or in this case inexperienced, you're doing your player a disservice.
Jerrit, with a freshman OH and setter, didn't put either player in a position to succeed.

Coming from Cali, I'm sure Lexi's club offense was twice the pace of the Texas' moon-ball offense. And to add, there is no way that McCoy's passing has improved from three years ago. The newly found "matador" digging was enjoyable to watch, though!

Obviously Sun is talented but in watching her this year I wonder if she has the passion... I know I hate that term, to take it to the next level. Anyone else see it or is it just me. Seriously, it's just you

I'm going to absolutely call out recruiting and coaching as it pertains to this and upcoming years. Cupboards are thin on passers. Claire Hahn has to be the worst DS I have seen on a top college volleyball team for quite some time. Absolutely atrocious.
Texas can get by with Shook's setting (albeit mediocre), but cannot get by with the DSs they currently have.
