Very competitive match. Newport Harbor makes very few errors. except set 2 and five. They get the most out of themselves.
Hicks was unstoppable most of the match.
They looked like the best two teams this year.
It looked like fatigue was going to be a factor in the fifth set for both teams. For good reason both teams were playing hard and fighting to win every point.

Who started for cdm? I heard players weren’t clear for part of the year.

Article about match - www.latimes.com/socal/daily-pilot/sports/tn-dpt-sp-nb-newport-harbor-corona-del-mar-20180519-story.htmlEnsign which feeds into Newport Harbor beat CdM in the 7th grade and 8th league championships in 2012 and 2013. Paragas, Kobrine, Hicks, Wynn, and Browning were on the Corona del Mar team together and have worked hard to come back and beat them their senior year. Here is the 7th grade team that Browning and Hicks mention in the article Here is the 8th grade CdM team that added Tyler Flood to the others and lost a match to the 8th grade Ensign team.

I have a feeling that these players had motivation to win a CIF title that extended beyond avenging a loss in middle school. The lenient CIF transfer rules have really changed high school volleyball. Huntington Beach benefitted heavily from those transfer rules; I’m pretty sure that the majority of their starting lineup in 2014 and 2015 were transfers. Brandon Hicks and Diego Perez transferred to CDM from other schools and it really tipped the scales in their favor the last two years. I have always felt that club volleyball offers the opportunity to create super teams, but that high school volleyball should not be that way. What do you guys think? I’m not blaming the kids as much as I’m blaming the system that allows this to happen.

I agree that building a super team based on transfers is not in the spirit of high school sports where players represent their area.
Hicks had a major impact in the match. Hicks is not the typical case of a transfer to build a super team. He went to elementary school with the cdm players and he mentioned in the article he learned the game at cdm middle school. He is number 8 on the cdm 7th grade team and was on the 8th grade team that lost to the ensign team that had Talley and Pender. Hicks transferred out to mater dei but he returned to cdm, his local school with the guys he grew up with since kindergarten.
Perez’s family moved to Newport Beach last year. Cdm is the closest school. He has been a valuable team member the past two years for the cdm team.

I understand differently about the middle school years.
That CdM Middle School team lost the league championship in 7th grade to Ensign, but they won in 8th grade.
In the 8th grade middle school season, both teams finished the season with one loss. CdM lost their match to Ensign during the season (as shown in the video), but won in the Finals for the league championship.
How will the final chapter be written for the seniors from this Newport Beach class of 2018?
Ensign/Newport Harbor - Pender/Talley CDM MS/ CDM HS - Browning/Flood/Hicks/Kobrine/Paragas/Wynn

Do players care about the State tournament? I know it was viewed primarily as a superfluous tournament that failed to capture the attention of the players and coaches in a way that the CIF tournament does, but I am curious if that has changed in recent years.

Seems like a waste of time. San Diego is not that strong and neither is City Section. So just a repeat of the final 4.

last year the players for Loyola cared because they choked against CDM in Cif finals but then swept them in state Either Loyola cared or CDM didn't care. Or both. The way the state tournament is set up it is like a second chance to play the same thing all over again. A chance for the teams who lost to try again. All 4 teams from the SS semi final round made the 8 team "state" tournament. It would be way more interesting if it were a true state tournament - an 8 team tournament with teams from the whole state played over a weekend in one location. 2 games Friday night, 2 games Saturday morning. The semi finals Sat. night and the final Sunday morning. Or even 6 teams with the top two getting a bye. - Friday night play-in, Sat morning semis and final Saturday night.
