I saw Pender play on the beach this past high school season, and that kid is amazing. I wanted to like him so badly..... we all like rooting for talented guys on the court. On or about the 15 second mark, it became painfully clear that kid is a complete jackhole. He quickly became the poster-boy for "how not to act" with my family.
HE IS YOUNG. HE CAN CHANGE.
However, too many similar stories about that kid. Wonder why UCLA wants to deal with that?

If the kid doesn't pan out they have many more options. If he matures and works out perhaps he is a great addition to the roster.

Seems a lot like net fishing to me. See how many fish you can haul in and the one’s you don’t like, just throw em back. It is very challenging to create a winning culture that way.

DeFalco had character issues in HS as well. He has made big improvements in that regard, and of course he just won a national title. Cole Pender and TJ DeFalco are by no means the same player in terms of talent or demeanor, but I think DeFalco's growth is a sign that positive change is possible.

It is interesting to see what a couple of years and being around older guys does to maturity. Time is not a guarantee but, it typically does the trick. Seeing kids in high school and then in the first quarter of freshman year there is already significant growth. Cleary UCLA has so many mature players (i.e. Hatch, Ma'a, Misrey, Hess...), a good young group, and lots of solid guys on the way in. Speraw, Kellar and Hawks set strong boundaries for their players, have a great culture and guide their players. I think Pender will be fine at UCLA. Where are Paragas and Perez going to school next year? What about Chalmers and Karlous of NH (Class of 2019)?

Clearly, Speraw, Kellar, and Hawks have the talent. And when it gets down to it - clearly they are getting "out-coached."

Arnitz should have been involved in the offense much earlier and having Hess as the go to guy was ridiculous.

A couple years can change a lot of things. I had heard that Baldwin from SMBC Pali struggled with his demeanor on the court when he was playing with the Parks brothers and now the kid looks resolute. Don't count out Pender just because he has an innate desire to win. A hate for losing and passionate love for winning, that's the sort of stuff that creates champions down the line.
