I don't know that it is any different than any of the higher tiered programs. Kidd wasn't going to crack the line-up, Luyties did not crack the line-up for two years (I believe she would have this year but it wasn't guaranteed. She will likely see playing time at Cal). It's tough with the big rosters that many teams are carrying. The girls need to step up in order to see competitive action. Otherwise, transfers are bound to happen. Monkhouse is an unfortunate loss, however, but my understanding is Hawaii never really suited her. She was given the opportunity to play with a good partner and receive playing time at one of the top flights. She could have been in the top flights for three more years. Rogers just picked up Crissy Jones from Washington for next season. I hope Hawaii can land a grad student or transfer! +Bunn and maybe one more.

Lea Monkhouse's departure is shocking. Not having any contacts or inside info on the team, I just assumed everything was hunky-dorry. Monkhouse was a starter, won all sorts of accolades, etc. What's going on?

Lea Monkhouse's departure is shocking. Not having any contacts or inside info on the team, I just assumed everything was hunky-dorry. Monkhouse was a starter, won all sorts of accolades, etc. What's going on? Sometimes stuff happen behind the scene that we don’t see. Maybe she had trouble making friends, maybe she was homesick, maybe she was clashing with the coaches in terms of training techniques and stuff, maybe Hawaii was not her cup of tea.. Some players just rather leave then find a compromise. What gives me pause is why she was not granted a release? If Monkhouse was a model student, a model teammate and a plus for the team, Hall wouldn’t have problem letting her go. If she approached Hall and said that she was homesick, I doubt Hall would hold it against her. Hall’s reputation would take a major hit if it was found out that he denied a homesick player her rightful release. Our AD Dave Matlin is big on character. If Hall did the wrong thing by not releasing her, he would hear about it from Matlin. Marlin could even override Hall’s decision and gave Monkhouse her release. My guess is it was a messy breakup....so messy that Hall doesn’t think Monkhouse deserved a release.

My understanding is that there were some issues with likely all of the above (fitting in, homesickness, Hawaii not her cup of tea, and some on training techniques etc.). Partly, I think it was the way she went about wanting to depart with her team and teammates that were in question and her reasoning. She also did go to the NCAA to appeal, so I am not sure the outcome of that but if she isn't playing next year and redshirts instead, I guess we'll have that answer.
Sometimes players want to leave a team because they don't think the team will be as good the next year and want to get on a winning team. I am not sure that is a valid reason to leave a commitment either. Hopefully, the NCAA is fair and just in its ruling and does what is fair for both the team and player.
In any event, I knew fans would be surprised (as were some of the players). It's unfortunate for the team and her situation, that she wasn't able to find a way to make it work. Hawaii is definitely a weaker team without her. Luckily, there is likely another surprise (but a positive one) that will hopefully leave the team at the same strength as it was prior to Monkhouse's departure.

I wouldn’t be too down on the team. We may not be as great as we were last season but I doubt we are going to free fall like some think. We need 10 solid players(5 flights with each flight having 2 players). Morgan Martin, Amy Ozee, Ari Homayun, K. Huddleston, Page Dreeuws, Pani Napoleon, and Presley Forbes are almost “shoo ins” to play. If we can find three from the returners plus the newcomers, we should be OK. Kylin Loker is highly regarded so she may get a crack to play right away. I like Julia Scoles athletic abilty so I am looking for good things from her. We will need one from the group of Cali Bunn, Regan Hurkett, Jenna Benz, Ashley Steven to step up.
Lauren White and Sofia Russo had solid HS careers but don’t know if they are being counted on to play right away. Kristen Abels have a beach background but sure how good she is.
Plenty of youth but excited to see them grow.

Yeah, that's what I'm hearing too. She is supposedly retiring from volleyball altogether though to focus on life goals.
The cupboard is starting to look increasingly bare!
Returning Starters:
1. Morgan Martin 2. Amy Ozee 3. Ari Homayun 4. Paige Dreews
Others possibly in top flights? 5. One other impact player likely to play next season (still waiting on the official news) - we need this player!
6. Huddleston (and she was considering retiring but am fairly sure she is coming back now) 7. Julia Scoles (sounds like she is getting her beach on and should have no problem cracking the starting lineup) 8. Presley Forbes 9. Pani Napoleon 10. Kylin Loker
11. Regan Hurkett 12 Ashley Stevens 13. Jenna Banz
Not sure where Hurkett and Loker will play out but we need some "bigs" to step up. Would really like to see a couple of good senior/graduate transfers for at least one season, then recruiting is looking decent (should no one change their commitment).
I just don't see us being on UCLA or even USC's level this year...Cal Poly in the Big West is going to be a tall order. And didn't Martin get a shoulder surgery this summer? I hope she can get back to form come Spring.

I hope she can get back to form come Spring. I hope Kristen Abels will be able to get her beach groove back. I read she was a fairly good beach player as a young teen. Was part of some kind of TeamUSA beach High Performances invitee or something like that. Probably gave up beach to concentrate on indoor. Played one year at Utah and didn’t do much so I guess her love of indoor have vanished and will try to rejuvenate her beach career here in Hawaii. Write up on her during her HS years in San Diego was that she was a very good athlete with high volleyball IQ. Hope those characteristics can help her become a force quickly because UH may need her. www.teamusa.org/usa-volleyball/features/2013/december/20/beach-camps-atract-top-talentAbels is listed third under the Girls Select U17 roster. Also on that list is current UH player Morgan Martin and also there is Oregon’s Brooke Van Sickle(daughter of former UH men’s volleyball player Gary Van Sickle). Cal Poly is represented by Torrey Van Winden and Jaime Stiver. Natalie Anselmo is currently at University of Arizona. Joy Dennis from USC and Hannah Phair from UCLA are also on that list. Got some pretty good volleyball players on the U17 team.

Also hear Gaskin is pretty much set to play beach.

Are you sure this is for beach? It just sounds like what they are saying is coming in for indoor as well. If so, I hope they are good! With exception of last year's starters, I am not sure if any of last year's "bigs" are ready this season if we want to compete. Excited at the prospect of some good players coming in!
