It's great to see two Canadian teams on the podium at such a big event. Heather and Brandie are on a great roll, in every match they play, win or lose. BTW, they are not losing a whole lot right now. A week ago SP and MHP were, to quote some posters, "a train wreck". Posters went so far as to suggest that MHP should leave SP. Today, according to posters, "they're lucky". Maybe, they're just good? Fighters? Never say die? I have to agree that a week ago, they looked like anything but a top 10 team, but give them credit for figuring things out in a few days and turning their fortunes around. As for, "If Sude didn't touch that ball", well she did. She touched it because when she saw SP going up to swing, she believed that the probability of the ball landing in was high. By the same token, if Melissa doesn't get called on an open hand (even the announcers disagreed with the call), who knows. My point, plays happen throughout a match that are "if only" points (ask JR Smith). You win enough of those points, you probably win the match. That's what makes sport great and unpredictable. Congratulations on our 4 medalists. They have put us on the top of the beach volleyball world. Hopefully, it will continue, but we do know that from one week to the next anyone can emerge. That's what makes this game so exciting to follow. She touched it because the hit was so bad it surprised her and she couldn't pull back fast enough. Sara/MHP had a great weekend and beat two very good teams, but that play - which should have lost them the match - was absolute pure luck. I thought the MHP call was good, but refs are so inconsistent on that who knows what the correct call was. She also got called on a couple sets which was very unusual The touch did not happen on match point. It happened at 15-15.

There was an example of one thing I love about MHP and Sara as a team in the first game, Sara got a key block to go up 20-17 or 20-18, basically the block that really won the game. Sara just kind of turned away from the net, but MHP went nuts. That combination of personalities is really fun.

Congrats to the Canadians with 2 teams on the podium.
Teams that reach the podium don't get there from sheer luck. They played well enough and consistent enough to find a way to win their matches. They played well enough to keep the score close. Every team gets a "lucky break" at some point that could make the difference in a match. You win some and you lose some; that's part of the game.
I would have liked to see an All-Canadian final! Not sure if they're over it now, but there wasn't a lot of lost love between Bansley and Pavan (that would have been fun to watch). Brandie and MHP are a different story. They're good friends and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they team up next quad. I don't think they split with current partners until after 2020.

I don't think they split with current partners until after 2020. Why would they? I mean, is there an reason at all to really do that? Both teams already won tournaments this year. So what's to gain in a partner switch?

So what's to gain in a partner switch? Sara/MHP should not, but Bansley and Wilkerson both should if offered because Sara is the best blocker and MHP the best defender. Sara/MHP are my favorite non-US team, but I would be incredibly curious to see Brandi play behind Sara's block. Huge team with two lefties with odd offense. Brandi is an excellent blocker but given her speed I think she could transition to defense relatively quickly and its not like digging balls behind Sara is very tough.

No they definitely don't get there on pure luck, but luck plays a massive factor in how well a team does in a given event. (I'd also say top 4 as opposed to podium because the 3rd place game is garbage and half the time the teams are clearly not up for it) But as to luck, first there is the draw which is a huge factor. Some teams, like Sara/MHP in this tournament have to fight through 2-3 top teams to win a tournament. (Duda + Chantal) Other teams, like Summer/Sara in Espinho, can get to a final without playing a single top team (they lost in the semis, but the best team they would have played pre-finals was a good Australia team) In the other Espinho bracket, the highest seed Antonelli/Salgado played to make the final was the 12th seeded - and awful - Chinese team. Second the 50/50 luck points. There are a lot of these in every match and if chance goes against a team, that can be the difference between going 5-5 in random points (i.e. points that are not won by skill) and 9-1.

Hey Donnyw - was this your first FIVB overseas? How did it go? And how did you like Gstaad? Hope that you had a great time!!! 2nd FIVB I’ve been to...I heard Gstaad was the best one on the World Tour coupled with Kerri & Nicole playing in this one, I decided to surprise my wife with a 5 day trip..Couldn’t get her to watch any men’s matches..She finds men’s matches boring. She says that just no emotion on the men’s side. So we watched a lot of the US women’s matches and went sight seeing quite a bit..Beautiful Country!! Would definitely go back with or without beach VB...
