How’s Hamson’s Injury going to impact BYU’s prospects? Who do they have behind her at opp?

They need a better playing surface.
I've seen too many serious injuries where someone lands on a slick spot after jumping.

Question for any BYU poster who regularly attends home matches in Provo: Will I have any issue just walking up to the ticket booth and securing a good seat near floor level (Smith Fieldhouse) for the 7pm Stanford match on Friday night, Aug 31? It looks like classes start Sept 4 so perhaps student turnout will be light.

Tickets near the floor are assigned. It’s not open seating, except in the rafter section.

It looks like classes start Sept 4 so perhaps student turnout will be light. It's hard to say. Stanford may draw the students the way Washington did, even if classes haven't started. Last year against Ohio State you wouldn't have had a problem doing that and getting a pretty good seat, but it could be completely different this year. If you want a chair seat, you will need to purchase either a $7 prime reserved (green area) or reserved ticket (yellow area), or fight for a folding chair in the small blue section on the west side or in the blue north rectangle section. It may wise to call the ticket office and see if they can tell you the availability for that specific match. Students generally sit in the general admission sections though, so they aren't the problem; it's the volleyball-loving people from the community that may clammer to see a top-ranked team like Stanford.

azvb & Zazu,
Thx for ticket info -- looks like I should order in advance or contact Denise (Stanford Coach) for guest tickets. Last year at Oregon it was a near sellout, so good thing I had preordered tickets.

When Olmstead was on the VolleyMob podcast 2 weeks ago, sounded like Ballard had the advantage in the battle to start at opposite, so that now pretty much locks Ballard in at starter there. Going to be hard to find a spot for all of those hitters. If Hamson comes back healthy next year, Ballard maybe moves to outside hitter, but it's still really crowded at the opposite. Perils of committing to a big-time program like BYU I guess... volleymob.com/byu-opposite-sara-hamson-undergoes-knee-surgery/

Having more talent than you need is a good problem to have most of the time. They will have some big shoes to fill next season after RJP graduates, so I'm sure it will be nice to have plenty of options.

But Cosy played all of 2017 as a MB, so there was already a revolving door of suitors for the Opposite position, including Lacy Haddock, Stetler, and Hamson, after Ballard was injured.

But Cosy played all of 2017 as a MB, so there was already a revolving door of suitors for the Opposite position, including Lacy Haddock, Stetler, and Hamson, after Ballard was injured. Yeah, the writer really missed the mark on that one. She only played a few sets at opposite in 2016 due to injury and spent all of 2017 as a middle blocker, which means she hadn't played opposite for them other than a few sets since 2015. That in no way equates to having to replace her for this season at opposite. I think replacing her at middle blocker may be tougher than some think, even though they've got some great young talent coming in.
Also Taylen was clearly performing better than Hamson (and anyone else they'd tried) at opposite last year when she went down with an injury. Even after she was injured, Lacy Haddock worked her way into that position ahead of Hamson and Lewis-Bushman, even though it was out of her comfort zone. Once again she was thrown into a less-than-ideal spot and made it work. Can't say enough about her. I was eager to see what progress Hamson had made since last year, but I always felt she would have to improve quite a bit to move past Ballard into the starting spot.
I only made it to the first spring scrimmage (vs. Utah), so I'm sure the team looks a lot different now. If my memory is correct, Hamson was not there (still paying basketball), Kennedy (Redding) Eschenberg was in a boot and didn't play, and I think Tristyn Moser (who's not listed on this year's roster) was there, but I'm not sure. Ballard obviously didn't play either. Jones-Perry and Miller played outside and Haddock played opposite most of the time. Stetler played some at both positions. Lewis-Bushman played one set at opposite (front-row only) and that's all I remember seeing of her. Jones-Perry, Miller, Stetler, and Haddock all took turns playing all six rotations. Miller was still the weakest six-rotation outside of the four. She was targeted and they usually had to hide her after a few serve receive errors. BYU lost both sets that she played all six rotations, and although I wouldn't say that was the reason, it definitely played a role. I think Gneiting and Stapleton played middle in all four sets, but a little fuzzy on that. They don't have Stapleton listed as a middle, and I wonder if they've abandoned that idea now that they've got Whitney McEwan. They've listed Emily Lewis-Bushman as an opposite and middle, and I thought she did pretty well playing middle in the spring 2016 scrimmages, but she didn't play middle at all during this scrimmage. They had Martindale play libero for one or two sets. Seemed to do okay. I think Haddock-Eppich set the first three sets and then Kiani (Tuileta) Moea’i and incoming freshman Tayler Tausinga shared setting duties in set four. Utah played Dani Barton at opposite all six rotations, and she was very effective on the back row against BYU's block. With that wicked lefty curve of hers, they had a very difficult time figuring out where to set up the block. She played very well, and Utah held its own taking 2 of the sets.
I'll be attending the August 18th exhibition against UVU and will post some observations afterwards.

Thanks for the scouting report. . Was hoping Miller would keep improving on serve receive... I am hoping that the first two matches at Duke will be streamed on ACC + (ESPN) as all of Duke’s pre-conference matches were last season. It will be interesting to see what the lineup is.

Jones-Perry won so many matches last season for BYU, she is a stud. The rest of the team is also impressive and with the recruits they have coming in this will make them even more formidable than they were in 2017.
