BYU exhibition match streaming now on byutv.org/livetv
BYU starters: Jones-Perry and Miller at OH, Lyndie Haddock-Eppich setting, Gneiting and Redding-Eschenberg at MB, Lyman and Lacy Haddock have also been in the match already.
Tied at 5 in the first set.

Hmmm. BYU serve receive and defense not crisp so far. Lots of hitting errors (9 so far) mostly on less than perfect sets. UVU up 21-20 in set 1. From this early look, BYU has some work to do to clean up the back row and setter-hitter connections, smarter hitting choices, in the next 7 days.
Haddock starting at Opp, and Lyman DS'ing for McKenna Miller.
Miller really struggling, spraying balls long and wide. With BYU down 21-24, Stetler was subbed in for Miller. Gneiting and Eppich had some nice blocks. BYU rallied for a comeback to a 27-25 first set win. Full crowd at Smith Fieldhouse cheering like it's the national championship match. Nice to have such a loyal fanbase for an exhibition match!
Set 2, UVU out to a fast start again, but BYU pulling it together more. 5'10 Fr Madi Robinson playing Opp this set. Gneiting will continue the great BYU blocking tradition.

BYU pulled out a close second set over a UVU team that is undersized and very scrappy, playing a similar style of volleyball to LMU. Heather Olmstead, interviewed at the half, said that BYU's passing was bad and offense was terrible...'nowhere near where we want to be'. RJP was the bright spot so far, getting her offense going after a slow start, now with 14 kills in 2 sets. The rest of the offense has sputtered so far. Hopefully BYU will start to click in the third set. Stetler DS'd for McKenna Miller in the second set. Miller probably hit positive in the second set but was hugely negative in the first set. Gneiting has had some kills on 1 sets and a slide, but has also hit long and had a net violation. Her potential is obvious, though.
Edit: BYU won 27-25, 25-22, 25-20. RJP finished with 20 kills in 3 sets, hitting .286. Mary Lake was great. Stapleton played MB for Eschenberg in set 3. Taylen Ballard did not play....still injured??

I see that LMU added a 5'7 transfer setter from Holy Cross a couple weeks ago, and in his interview, Coach Mansfield made several references to Tess Reid's setting, and when she was front row and when she was back row. Sounds like they are running a 5-1 with Tess this year. Is their other junior setter, Prichard, injured?

I watched this video and LMU coach references "Tess" on the front and back row. Has LMU gone to 5-1? After watching them in a 6-2 last year, that seemed to make sense but it is surprising in that they have three setters on the roster. I think they could be really good if they can get Rice to terminate and find a middle that can be a threat.

I hope McKenna Miller’s sophomore slump doesn’t turn into a junior slump. 😐
Anyone know what happened to Moser? She was a nice DS.
One more question. What constitutes a scrimmage? This looked like a regular match to me.

azvb (or anyone else): do you know why Ballard didn't play in the exhibition match? Is she still injured? BYU otherwise has the choice of two 5'10" Opposites, and I think that might affect my view of them, in addition to some scarily poor serve receive and hitting errors in the exhibition match... Hopefully it was first game jitters, and they are hard at work this week to prepare for two matches against Duke to start the season. Don’t know why Ballard didn’t play. I’m more concerned why McKenna Miller hasn’t regained her freshman form!!!!
Thanks for doing such a great job on this thread, bayarea!

Ballard needs to be on right, Haddock provides no offense there. If anything Miller should go on the right if Ballard is not 100%, she can bang away there and probably won’t see as many double blocks there. I’d love to see Robinson or Lyman at OH if Miller continues to struggle.

Hopefully all of these tournament hosts will at least support Live Stats for the matches of the other teams in their tourneys. Most of the stats links don't work yet, but I am hopeful. Interesting that LMU is running a 5-1 with the 5'8" Tess Reid this season, but she is a very good setter, and they had great success going that route with the same-sized Hannah Tedrow a few years ago. Reid was injured for much of her freshman? season, and Prichard had to run a 5-1 the remainder of that season, so I expect that's why they picked up a backup setter a couple of weeks ago. Prichard must be unable to play this season. She is also a talented player, so hopefully all is well there.

Big things expected at USD this season and they have a challenging OOC to start, with a chance to prove just how good they are. Quite an impressive and consistent resume when you read it. How transfer Cami May from Penn State contributes could determine just how far they go.
SAN DIEGO – Wearing caps and gowns at San Diego’s graduation ceremonies last year were Kristen Gengenbacher, a third team All-American setter on the Toreros’ volleyball team. And outside hitter Jayden Kennedy, an honorable mention All-American. And Lizzy Tardieu, the Toreros’ starting libero.
Despite losing a significant core of last year’s team that finished 25-5 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, head coach Jennifer Petrie says she did not shed tears at graduation.
“For so many years we’ve graduated impactful players,” said Petrie. “And I remind myself, the youth, they’re the impactful players of tomorrow. Somebody always steps into those shoes, always fills that gap.”
Coach Petrie has compiled a 371-132 record over the past 19 years. Petrie is in her 20th season directing the Toreros and doesn’t require instructions on how to rebuild. Need proof? Try eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Try 16 trips to the NCAAs in the last 17 years.
The expectation, inside the program and out, is that the Toreros will be postseason bound again in 2018. The American Volleyball Coaches Association ranked USD 14th in its 2018 preseason poll.
With a blend of talented veterans returning, plus a recruiting class she calls her “most impactful,” Petrie is bullish about the 2018 squad.
Within the team, there are two main goals. Win the West Coast Conference for the second year in a row. Advance to the NCAAs Elite Eight for the first time in school history.
“We’ve raised the bar,” Petrie said. “The kids are anxious to go farther.”
The team figures to be strong at the net. Middle blockers Addie Picha and Kaity Edwards, both seniors, are back. Picha earned honorable mention All-American honors last season. Both were selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
Sophomore Roxie Wiblin and senior Lauren Fuller return as outside hitters.
All those returners, though, are getting pushed in practice. Petrie expects four newcomers, including three freshmen, to log valuable floor time
Cami May, a sophomore transfer from Penn State, appears to be Kennedy’s heir apparent at right outside hitter. The freshmen making an immediate impression are outside hitter Katie Lukes, setter Laura Madill and libero Kelli Barry.
“The freshmen are stepping in and challenging the seniors,” said Petrie. “Our practices have been more competitive at this point of the season than I can ever remember.”
Petrie, associate head coach Brent Hilliard and first-year assistant Jimmy Lundgren are confident this year’s team is good. They won’t have to wait long to find out.
The Toreros open the season Aug. 24 and 25 with back-to-back matches at No. 17 Washington. The home debut comes Sept. 1 vs. No. 16 Baylor.
Pac-12 powers No. 11 UCLA and No. 10 USC visit Jenny Craig Pavilion on Sept. 2 and 14, respectively.
Include the two matches against WCC rival and preseason No. 8 BYU and the Toreros face seven matches against teams ranked in the preseason Top 25.
Regarding the challenging schedule, Petrie said, “We want to give the team opportunities to earn national recognition.”
The first serve has yet to float over the net in 2018, but Petrie doesn’t hesitate admitting she thinks this team might be special.
“I like them a lot,” she said. “I’m very impressed.”
