We didn’t have senior night in the 70’s, but I remember the emptiness after my last match. It was a loss for 3rd place at the National Championships. Us seniors did a group hug and cried. 4 of us have kept in close contact. Unfortunately, our last reunion was at our teammates funeral 4 years ago. Volleyball has been good to me. I often wonder what my life would had been like if I hadn’t seen the ad for tryouts in the school paper. And so glad I had the courage (or stupidity) to try out. My only experience was 9 man church ball 😀. But, I digress. GO COUGARS!!!!! I’m kinda worried about this LMU match. That sounds wonderful--playing volleyball and making life-long friends.
I've been worried about the LMU match since the beginning of the season. LMU had a very rough end to their season last year against BYU, they have lost two straight, this is senior night, it's against the #1 team, a win may be their only shot at making the tournament. I think that's enough motivation to cause problems for any team.
I really want BYU to win so they don't lose their chance of hosting the first two rounds. I don't think BYU has a prayer of winning the national championship without McKenna Miller (oh, how I want to be wrong about that), and I think they'll be hard-pressed to reach the final four even with home-court advantage, but I would love to have them host the first four rounds no matter what happens.

Congratulations to all the WCC seniors/graduate students who are playing their last match tonight (hope I didn't miss anyone). BYU #6 Lyndie Haddock-Eppich (S) #9 Sydnie Martindale (DS) #11 Lacy Haddock (OH/OPP) #12 Roni Jones-Perry (OH) #13 Danelle Stetler (OH/DS)
Gonzaga #3 Marit Thorkildsen (DS) #4 Faith Smith (S) #7 Perry Ramsey (OPP) #8 Peighton De Von (MB) #13 Tiyana Hallums (L)
Loyola Marymount #5 Kekai Whitford (L) #11 Sara Kovac (OPP)
Pacific #88 Alex Holt (MB)
Pepperdine #2 Blossom Sato (S) #3 Nikki Lyons (OH) #4 Heidi Dyer (OH/OPP/S) #15 Jenna Tunnell (OPP/S)
Portland #5 Regan Pukis (OH) #6 Lauren Naatz (DS) Saint Mary's #2 Lindsey Calvin (MB) #3 Emily Bible (OH) #15 Sarah Chase (OH) #17 Lindsey Knudsen (OH)
San Diego #4 Addie Picha (MB) #12 Lauren Fuller (OH) #13 Katie Edwards (MB)
San Francisco #12 Marjolijn Oskam (MB) #19 Lena Bondar (OH/OPP)
Santa Clara #29 Tatiana San Juan (L/DS) Santa Clara celebrated Senior Night also for RS-Jr MB Taylor Odom, so assume she will be playing her last game tonight, in addition to San Juan. (Odom went a career high 10 for 10 hitting on Senior Night.) The other senior celebrated was MB/Opp, Hailey Lindberg who had to medically retire last Spring. Of all the schools, Saint Mary's is losing some 4-year starters in Calvin, Knudsen and Chase (when she was healthy), in addition to Bible, an excellent all around player who transferred. They and BYU will probably feel the most pain from losing seniors. Good luck to all the seniors tonight.

I seems like their middles anchored them for most of the season.

I seems like their middles anchored them for most of the season. Picha will be hugely missed. Edwards was also a large part of the offense the past two years but has been injured most of this season, so they've already had to do without her (Jacobsen has played in her spot, and they get her back for another season). Fuller really struggled this year and hasn't started much of the second half of the season. So it will be hard to replace a senior MB like Picha with a freshman, especially with Picha's blocking experience and hitting efficiency, but they are getting a tall and highly touted MB in Frohling next year. I think Saint Mary's losing 4 starters and BYU losing Haddock-Eppick and RJP, along with a very good DS, Martindale, are bigger losses to try to recover from.

Santa Clara took the first set over Saint Mary's. Hmm.
BYU and LMU are knotted at 22 in the first set.
Pacific beat SF 25-19 in the first set.
Gonzaga 25-23 over Portland in the first set.

LMU can still make the tournament. They’ll have to do what nobody else has been able to do this season: beat BYU. Well, well well. How about a sweep? Turning all kinds of predictions on their heads? Meanwhile Pacific beat USF in 5 Saint Mary's I believe beat Santa Clara in 4, though the stats froze in the fourth set, so I'm presuming here. San Diego and Pepperdine are in the fifth set now, after Pepperdine got out to a 2-0 lead. Gonzaga is up over Portland in the 5th set.

Pepperdine is up 7-4 in the fifth set over San Diego, potentially knocking San Diego out of the tournament? I may be slow, but there is no stream available from the Wooden Center at UCLA, and I just noticed that Rachel Ahrens has played 3 sets in this match for Pepperdine...I believe the first in several weeks since she was injured. She is 9/1/18, so that's a great sign for Pepperdine. Dyer and Frohling have each played in 4 sets, and without a stream, I have no idea who is playing where. Pepperdine is up 9-5 now.
Gonzaga beat Portland in 5. LMU over #1 BYU in 3 SMC over Santa Clara in 4 Pacific over SF in 5.

12-8 Pepperdine in the fifth. Interestingly, Newsome is back in the lineup for USD, so they presumably should have been playing more their normal lineup of volleyball. Picha has struggled the last two matches for San Diego after a really stellar season. Pins for San Diego have been troubled much of the time.
San Diego rallying to 11-13.

Congrats to LMU on a great win. Not totally surprised as BYU was fortunate to get out of Moraga with a W against the Gaels being down late in both the first two sets. Hope that BYU can clean up their serve receive and have a deep run in the tournament.

I am always sad to see a team that looked like they had all the pieces together suddenly fall apart after injuries. I know it's a part of every season but it's still a shame when you see it happen.

I noticed Allison Stapleton was with the team tonight. That's a little bit of good news for BYU in the injury department.
